Re: '10 WA LB Jon Cannon-Gatta

Kind of a mystery man who we just offered.

I'm trying to dig up more on him. I did find a Rivals High School article on the top ranked high school football programs for 2009, and Bellevue came in at #63. Cannon-Gatta was singled out in the write-up.

Rivals HS Rankings

COACH: Butch Goncharoff
LAST SEASON: 14-0, Won Washington Class 3A State Title
FINAL 2008 RIVALS.COM RANKING: No. 45 Nationally
KEEP AN EYE ON: The backfield. Bellevue, who has run a wing T offense for 10+ years, has a trio of runningbacks returning in 2009 that all rushed for over 800 yards in 2008. They are lead by QB JoJo Connor. Conner is a two year starter and runs a legit 4.4 forty according to Coach Goncharoff.
STAR POWER: Three star defensive lineman Julious Moore has already given his early commitment to UCLA. At 6-1 260 pounds the run stuffer allows Bellevue to move from their traditional 4-3 defense to 3-4 and 3-3-5 on some occasions.
STRENGTHS: The linebacking core is a major strength of the defense. With Jon Cannon-Gatta and Nick Moyer patrolling the field the Wolverines are stoudt in the middle.
PLAY 'EM ALL: "We have been able to play De La Salle and Long Beach Poly and win," Coach Goncharoff explains. "Those games have opened up a door for us to play Katy (Texas) this year and Grant (California) as well. We like to play up in divisions and out of state competition as much as we can."

Re: '10 WA LB John Kanongata'a

Thanks to Ringo, I now know why I couldn't find a thing on this guy.

Rivals absolutely butchered his name. It's "Kanongata'a", not "Cannon-Gatta". Someone must have taken the phonetic as the true spelling. :smile2:

Ringo also said that we have not offered yet.

Anyway, he was the LB MVP at CU's camp and followed it up with a LB MVP Runner-Up performance at Washington's camp. His height is what's holding him back right now (a few inches short for a LB), but he's all over the field and his recruiting is expected to significantly pick up during his senior year. Also, he could potentially end up at safety.

20. Bellevue (Wash.)
Last season's record: 14-0, Class 3A state champion
Key players: OL/DL Julious Moore; LB John Kanongataa; OL/DL Jake Hiller
Outlook: You've got to love the Wolverines' confidence. On back-to-back weekends (Sept. 12 and Sept. 19) they are taking on defending state champions from both Texas (Katy) and California (Grant). If they win both and Skyline beats Oaks Christian, that means two teams from Washington could be in the Top 10 in the FAB 50. For the team to get to that level, though, head coach Butch Goncharoff will need to find offensive players to step up into starring roles. Both the trench corps and defense should be as good as ever.

John's a pretty talented guy. If the football thing doesn't work out for him he always has this to fall back on.

Re: '10 WA LB John Kanongata'a

Big bro is playing for the College of the Canyons Cougars. COC is a 2-year community college (JUCO) in Santa Clarita, CA. Really good program. 10-0 regular season and made it to the semifinals of the CA State JUCO Championship last year.

Here's a little blip from 2008:

Oct. 4
Joey Frias throws two touchdowns and runs for one as the football team doubles up Allan Hancock 42-21. The Cougars defense is led by Will Kanongata'a, who records 10 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks, helping the Cougars improve to 5-0 on the season.

I think Will battled grade problems at Bellvue.

Re: '10 WA LB John Kanongata'a

Doing some searching, it looks like he plays some fullback too. I can't say I'd mind to see a change in offensive philosophy and a guy like this in the freshman class (and maybe Ahles moved over as an upperclassman).

Re: '10 WA LB John Kanongata'a

Expect him to play 1-AA ball. He's not very tall and doesn't have the wheels to make up for it at the D1 level. (This was his coach reporting to Rivals.)
