Cody Hawkins Comeback?

Article on possible/likely comebacks this year includes Cody Hawkins.

Entire mention here (bold is mine):

Cody Hawkins-QB-Colorado-
Hawkins had a terrific freshman campaign, throwing for 3,000+ yards. Last season was a different story, as the sophomore struggled to get to 1,700 yards. Hawkins has an issue with making bad interceptions at the wrong time.

This season, he’ll have something to prove, and should show some improvement despite the transfer of #1 receiver Josh Smith; If not, his quarterbacking days at C.U. will end on the bench. We don't expect that to happen.

I haven't given up on Cody. In fact, I'm cautiously confident that he's going to have a very good year. It's not like he doesn't have skills. We Buffs fans talk a lot about his limitations, but we probably don't spend enough time talking up the fact that he's also the most accurate arm in the Big 12.

:yeahthat:

He's proven that he can win against top teams in the B12. If we give him a ground game and a few more seconds in the pocket, he should flourish. I don't think I've seen him play with total confidence yet. Hopefully that will happen this year.

I know I am seen as a Cody sunshine pumper, but I have no doubt that he can deliver with the proper foundation more often than not. Buff fans have spent many years wishing they could say that about the QB. Could it be better? yes. Could it be far, far, worse? Definitely.

His play suffered right along with the OL injuries. If defenders aren't in his face, they can't bat down his passes (okay, less likely, anyway). I expect improved play all the way around the offense, with a healthy DS and some new faces at WR that need to step up and stretch the field. A big year for Geer?

who cares what he did in a little competition were he didnt have pads on, and didnt have the rush coming. colt mccoy has set the ncaa accuracy record at like 76% for a season.

pretty incredible

Just because he won an accuracy competition, does not mean he is the most accurate arm in the Big 12. He has yet to complete over 60% of his passes over the course of a season, hardly the mark of an accurate QB.

I hope Cody is as good as you guys think because he is going to have to be if we want to win the next couple seasons.

No one questions whether what Colt did was impressive. But he also played behind a line that gave him a great pocket and all day to throw, with a receiving corp that was talented enough to get a ton of separation, and an offense designed for high completion % efficiency.

Using game stats to measure accuracy simply does not give you an apples-to-apples comparison. The only apples-to-apples comparison we have is an accuracy skills competition and Cody has won over him twice... this summer and the summer after high school.

Seriously? Skills competitions are a better comparison than games? I understand you think Cody is more accurate than he has shown, but come on.

I think there's a good chance that if you asked Colt who had the more accurate arm, he'd say Cody.

Plus, I intentionally worded my posts to say "most accurate arm" instead of "most accurate QB" or "most accurate passer" because Cody hasn't shown it in games.

But you do have to admit that when QBs play in different offenses against different competition and with different talent surrounding them, you can't use a completion % stat to say who is more accurate.

When the difference is anywhere from 12-20%, I think you can. That is not such a small difference for it to be all about different competitions and different talent levels IMO.

That's valid.

But the argument for Cody is also valid.

And if you go through Cody's game stats, there's reason to believe in him. For instance, prior to getting absolutely abused in the Florida State game last year, Cody's game stats were as follows:

CSU: 20/29 (69.0%), 214 yards
EWU: 28/38 (73.7%), 261 yards
WVU: 22/33 (66.7%), 179 yards

We all know that he doesn't have great height, isn't very mobile, and doesn't have a rocket arm. But with he does have a very accurate arm. If CU is able to run the ball, that will keep us in manageable passing situations and make us a bit unpredictable in our play calling. If the improved o-line can provide time and a pocket, Cody can set his feet and step into throws (and receivers have time to get open). It's not unreasonable to think this will happen and that Cody will thrive as a very efficient and accurate passer for CU this year. We've seen flashes of it the past 2 years.

If he wins the job, Cody is going to have to pass the ball in order for the team to have any success this year. 15-20 passes a game at a minimum, with a completion percentage of over 60%. Without that, opposing teams will simply stack the box and kill the running game. There are ways to combat that strategy, and I'm sure Kiseau will employ them. In the end, though, without the viable threat of throwing the ball, any running game will be doomed.

Hilarious. I was gonna bring up that 3 game stretch also. So ****ing stoked I now have another person who believes in cody on this board! :woot:

Sacky: definitely. He can do it.!

I did not think last year's offense was a good fit for Cody. He is much better suited to a play-action pass oriented offense, with a heavy dose of run game, imo.

Those three games are nice, but we all know it will really come down to Big 12 play. CSU was (and still is) a bad defensive team. Eastern Washington is well, Eastern Washington. West Virginia was a pretty good game on his part. Hard to judge based upon his first two seasons as the starting QB. That first season he was getting his feet wet. The second season the team was in survival mode.

Not to mention he's played in 2 difference offenses during his 1st two seasons, and he's about to play in his THIRD offense in 3 seasons.

Agreed. Having a running game and a little more time should help him out. With teams stacking the box to prevent the run, play action should be effective.

Colt McCoy had a stellar Freshman season and then laid an egg his Sophmore year, we all know how well he played last year, now I am not saying that Cody is Colt but I am optimistic of a rebound this year.

Last year's offense wasn't a good fit for anyone. Our RBs didn't like getting the ball from a standstill, the PA passes on 3rd and (very) long :wow::confused::cool::huh:, the lack of TEs in the passing game until the end of the year and so on. What an unmitigated disaster.

Our sets and schemes from his first year were definitely more of a better fit for him than the hackjob we saw last year.

Colt spent a lot of year 2 running for his life since UT had an inexperienced line and almost no running game. I'm also not saying Cody is Colt, but McCoy (or Bradford or whoever) is gonna look a lot better with time to throw and a ground game that can give you 3rd and 3 more often than 3rd and 9.

personally, my expectations are that Cody has a serviceable to very good year and we win 7-8 games.

I'm all for Cody being the QB if he clearly beats out Tyler for the job. There's no doubt he is a more accurate passer than Tyler. But let's not hand it to him just yet.

Thank you Captain Obvious!!!

Sorry couldn't help myself. :smile2:

I guess what I'm saying is that he needs to be a little more than a game manager. He has to produce with his arm. It has to be a threat.

I know it's great to be optimistic but Hawkins really has nothing on McCoy in any significant aspect of quarterbacking judged in an objective fashion. Are we seriously debating that here?
