Wild, Unsubstantiated Rumor

I have mixed feelings on this.

I certainly don't like the Big 12 as much as I liked the Big 8.

I doubt cu to pac 10 ever happens. I would like to see CU stay in the big 12 and somehow start beating OU and Texa$$ like they did when mac was at the helm.

This will always be a more beneficial rumor for CU than the Pac-10, so that is interesting to see it discussed from the other side. Would be great for CU to get more exposure in California, but hate that this would take Nebraska off the schedule annually except as a nonconference. Keep CSU in the deal and the AD's scheduling hands are really tied. Go with tradition, man. Or rather, continue to build on it now that NU can't play OU every year.

That's totally unreasonable...

NU wouldn't schedule us in the non-conference part of the season.

Gosh the Big 12 is so much better than the USC and the Pac-light 9...

I doubt this rumor is true because all things considered I'm not sure what we bring to the Pac 10 that improves it..

I think the Pac 10 will look at Utah eventually and hell maybe even Boise State if they continue all this winning..

Utah has world class facilities. However, given the Morman pull in the state I don't think they'd leave without BYU with them (ala Baylor and Ann Richards when forming the Big 12). Utah does have the Salt Lake City region and world class facilities.

Boise is too small of a market and they don't have all of sports that Pac10 teams must have (UCLA and Stanford must have every known D1 sport). This is the same argument against us joining the Pac 1.

Right, Pac-10 likely doesn't see a whole lot of value in adding a program that hasn't put together back-to-back seasons of being in the national title picture since 1996. Then again, this decade Oregon's been the closest thing they've had to a second national powerhouse to complement USC.

At that point in the unlikely hypothetical that CU were still able to make the move, Pac-10 probably brings another team in at the same time. Utah the new rivalry game? Like them, but hanging with them in that series isn't going to make CU blip the national radar. And as things are currently going we could be in the hole in that series for many years. I like the current Big 12 situation, especially this year as last year's bowl-eligible programs will be down, NU excepted. Time to make some noise.

I was kind of disappointed we didn't include BYU in the Big 12 North and drop Iowa State.. I know none of the Big 8 would have left one of their teams for dead in 94 to form the Big 12, but football wise it should have been done..

You are probably right though about Utah not wanting to leave BYU..

If I really put my mind to it, I'll bet I could teach myself to hate USC almost as much as I hate nebraska.

CU would have to add about a half dozen varsity sports and upgrade our facilities a ton. Swimming, Baseball, softball, gymnastics, wrestling and maybe lacrosse would all have to be varsity sports at CU in order for the Pac 10 to even think about considering us.

And no, I wouldn't have any problem hating USC. It would come naturally.

If the pac 10 would ever get a decent tv deal, this could be an interesting debate, but given that our ad's in debt to the university, I'll take the b12's cash.

Well, if the Pac 10 were to pull a Big 10 move and create it's own network, and promised CU some of that coin to fund a few facilities upgrades & additional sports, I think Mr Bohn could be convinced pretty easily.

trust me. i live in socal. my family has season tix. there are a million huge boosters around and petey has a house down here.

it isn't ****er level hate, but it comes as close as any other sports hatred i have.

The "network" buzz is interesting. Yes, Bohn would be wise to take such a deal should the p10 make this kind of offer, but would it be better than the b12's next deal? The SEC just leveraged a buttload of cash out of espn by not forming a network. Would the b12 have the juice to leverage espn, especially if the p10 makes its own network?

Despite my questions, your point is well-taken. The b10 network paid out a pretty penny to the conference schools according to this link.

I would feel loyalty if this was the Big 8 but who are we kidding we are now playing in the new SWC.

this. though, i can't see CU being attractive to the Pac right now. average over the last 5 years in football and terrible in hoops....our revenue sports are in bad shape. looking better perhaps, but still much worse shape than at anytime since Fairbanks.

i can also see a CU in the Pac as sort of the outlier figure in the conference....much like Arkansas was in the SWC....which isn't appealing and we already have to a lesser extent geographically in the Big XII. only Big 8 tradition and Nebraska as a true border state keep that "working".

Hmmm. Maybe I'm missing your point but doesn't Colorado border Kansas, too? Oklahoma as well, though maybe that panhandle thing doesn't actually qualify in your "true border state" calculation.

If geography were the critical component for conference alignment CU = the MWC.

All the former Big 8 schools are still in this conference, all it did was expand by 4 teams. So it's not like the old Big 8 broke up or anything like that, it just expanded.

You beat me to it. The Pac 10 would never consider CU unless we add the varsity sports you mention. CU cannot afford them, so you have a Catch-22.

Not wrestling. The PAC 10 doesn't function as a wrestling conference anymore.

i meant Kansas in there but typo/forgot. i'm not sure the OK border is too influential. that part of Oklahoma might as well be the moon in terms of human population/civilization.

i mostly wanted to identify that the "center" of the North is a lot closer to Kansas City than it is to Denver. we are pretty far west, it's 8-9 hours to Lawrence and the 1/3 of the state that's west of Denver seems more like Nebraska GBR country than Buff loyalists. and to emphasize that Denver is pretty much *out* of the discussion for hosting any major revenue sport conference events...that's pretty much KC, Houston, Dallas and to a lesser extent OKC. the axis of the conference doesn't skew too far west. in that sense, the Big XII north is a lot like the old Missouri Valley Conference (the proto Big 8, geography wise along the river drainages) and the SWC (Texas). we are where the water starts but not real close to the rest of the old MVC

now, as for the MWC, as unpopular as this will be....if BYU and Utah and even TCU can continue to be legit top 15-25 type teams for 5 more years or so....AND we have to live with the BCS or a playoff system might re-zone the NCAA map regionally....i would be interested in exploring a true Mountain States/Rocky Mountain conference that would include CU, BYU, Utah, poaching U of A and ASU from the Pac (which was originally the Pac 8 anyway) and possibly Texas Tech along with AFA and Lammies and such to form a legit "Rocky Mountain Conference" that would *genuinely deserve* it's own BCS bid.

the latter situation being a scorched earth response to "Tradition" if that becomes the way of the future or what is necessary for a playoff system of some kind.

My ideal scenario would be for the MWC to get BCS status and then for CU to join the MWC. The MWC has proven to in recent years to be able to play just as good of football as the Big East or the ACC and thei conference champ last year pummeled the SEC runnerup. I would like to leave the Big 12 and just let UT and OU dry hump each other every year for the Big 12 Title. The Pac 10 doesn't bother too much but from a selfish standpoint since I live in a CDT time zone I would hate to wait until 10pm for game time....lol

The question about the Pac-10 is what sports would be required for CU to participate in?

If you go to Oregon's athlethic website ( it is http://www.goducks.com/ ) you will notice that the sports that the Ducks offer are very similar to what we offer. We might not have to add anymore sports than what we have.

Also, what kind of a TV contract will the Pac-10 get?

At a bare minimum, I would suspect we'd need baseball, softball, mens & womens swimming, & gymnastics. We'd need new facilities for all of those events. Oh, and we'd probably have to re-instate mens tennis, too. In order to fully fund those programs, the CU AD would need a ton of money, prolly around $20MM/Yr. That's just a thumbnail guess on my part.
