Why not move Lockridge to WR?

With Simmons in all probability gone, and Simas suspended, and McKnight (!) our best WR, we should move Brian Lockridge out to WR. He's got good hands and is great in space. If nothing else, he gives us a 4.4 guy out on the edge and the defense will have to respect his speed. As currently constituted, we don't have anyone outside that the defense has to worry about going deep.

I know Hawk is talking about playing Lock and Speedy in the slot some this year, and that's a good idea, but I think Lock could be better utilized full time at WR. He's at best our #3 TB (behind Speedy and Scott, and arguably behind Sumler) but he would have a legit shot at starting at WR for us.

[As an aside, is it just me, or are all CU WR's facing the QB when the throw is made? Is this a product of our playcalling, our short QB, the fact our WRs can't get downfield, or something else? CU's offense -- all hooks, alll the time.]

I'll have to defer to people that have watched more practice than I this fall, but he's got good enough hands that he's played in the slot before.

They might do that but he is only 5' 7" plus with his inexperience he is way behind even the true freshmen. I believe they would prefer to use Ussery, Darden and Jefferson for depth. The problem they have is lack of experience at the position and Lockridge moving does not help that problem. If CU uses a 2 back set the 4th RB will get a lot of playing time.

You're probably right that the coaching staff is most concerned with the inexperience, but I'm also concerned about the lack of speed outside. Espinoza and McKnight are 4.7 guys, and I'd be surprised if Ussery and Darden are any faster. Jefferson may have wheels, I dunno, but I'd sure like to see someone outside that can stretch the field.

I think we'll see a lot of Lock splitting out from the backfield this year, but I doubt we'll see too much of him lining up as a straight up WR. Just a gut feeling, nothing more. Having Lock and Scott in the backfield at the same time puts a lot of pressure on the defense.

Ussery is suppose to be a 4.45 guy -Lockridge 4.43. Don't know about Darden.

Exactly. Much rather Lock go up against LBs or Safeties when he shifts out to the slot than try and beat CBs out on the edge. We had some pretty good success using this strategy with Brian Calhoun a few years ago. The three times Watson actually tried it. Before Calhoun transferred.

Something else to consider, if they want to try the end around plays again, it will be nice to have Lock coming around the edge, same speed as JFly, but with the moves and vision of an RB.

I'm too concerned about Lock's height for an official move to WR. Would much rather get a combination of existing receivers with above average hands, a stout pass-blocking line and a quarterback who can get enough elevation and speed on his passes to get the ball there. Since the 2004 ruling on Jeremy Bloom, CU hasn't had a speed threat line up at WR. We will ignore J-Fly because he changed the game more as a return man. It's up to the guys like McKnight, Jefferson and Simas later in the season to be role players to catch and hold on to what's coming their way. This should be enough to keep opposing back 7s from stacking the box against the run.

Already got Moyd out there at WR and he's just a half step slower than Lock!

Why all the worry about the depth at WR? Will any of those freshmen see DBs a whole lot better than those they face in practice everyday? Cetainly not against the Lammies, Toledo or WYO!

Against CSWHO, at the first bite by their DBs on play action, our guys are gonna be so far open, who cares what patterns they're running?

Wanna bet our first offensive play is a two-back set, PA fake to Scott, with a fly pattern?

I hope you're right, and you should be right for first few games of season. However,. we're going to need a gamebreaker on the outside to win against the WVUs, OSUs, NUs of the world. Hopefully somebody emerges.

or maybe our Buffs will just line it up and run right at them... like they did in 2001.

He just needs to be a guy you get the ball to because he has the tools to make things happen. Reggie Bush, Percy Harvin were moved around to get the ball in their hands. Yes I realize Locke isnt them, but he is the guy with the tools that we have to work with. Get him in the slot let him do some damage, put him in those 2 back situations, just move him around get the ball in his hands, same with speedy.

Well the last practice I went to Hawk was screaming at Moyd the whole time so I can see them not wanting him lining up as a receiver.

No, I meant Moyd.

Where did you hear about Moyd? All I'd read was that he was doing well at WR.

Nabors I definitely read in the past week that he had been moved back exclusively to RB.

I was really hoping Moyd would be able to give us something.

Could have sworn it was Moyd, but can't find the link.

Maybe it was Nabors, I don't know...F me.
