Holtz says ND to be in title game

He says they aren't the second best team, but their schedule will get them there. They really don't have any ball busters except for USC, which they play in South Bend. Will this be the year his false teeth shoot out of his mouth on TV?

This prediction makes about as much sense as saying that Colorado is going to the Final Four. ND isn't winning 10 games, let alone 12. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a losing record.

Only four road games? The schedule looks pretty favorable but at least one of those average teams they play should beat them.

Let's see they aren't going to beat Michigan State, USC, Pitt right off the top.. So that's 3 losses.. Add in another because they aren't really that good, so its 8-4.. Yep, national championship right in the Gator Bowl..

Lou is a pretty funny guy..

Even if they, did seeing the Gators/Horns/Sooners rout them in the championship game would sure be a ton of fun.

I always love a total Irish humiliation

I have to wonder if Lou has over-hyped ND the past couple years out of self interest. The ND faithful love him for it, and as an added bonus the higher the bar is set for Charlie the more likely it is that he won't reach it and son Skip gets the HC gig.

:yeahthat:

Lou always has an ulterior motive in addition to the fact that he just has a blind love for ND. They do have a schedule that sets them up for a great season, they also have a major problem of gagging and puking on games every year that a talent/budget comparison says they should never lose.

I have stated before that because they are one of the big spending fan base schools their recruits always get a bump in ratings. Even with that bump the players they have brought in over the past few years gives them no excuse for the crappy level of play they have shown. ND is one of those places talent goes to die. I don't see this year being any different than the last few. They may win enough games to qualify for a bowl and their name and fan base will guarantee that if they do they will get one that is above what they deserve. They will also gag enough times to make sure that they are not in the MNC picture.

Are you saying Lou is living a lie???

ND still attracts some good recruits, but nothing like it did 20 years ago. The last 10 years has definitely seen the better recruits staying in the warmer climates. If you can spend 4 or 5 years in a warmed up place like Gainesville, Baton Rouge, Austin, or sunny, funny LA, why in the world would you want to go freeze your ass off for years on the shores of Lake Michigan in God awful South Bend. Granted the education you get there is second to none, but the really big dogs see themselves playing in the pros anyway. 20 years ago, alot of those southern boys went to ND, Nebraska, and other northern
schools - those days are gone. Just look at the condition of the Big 10 - a shell of what is was years ago.

I think they'll be a little better team than they were last year, but their schedule will make them look better than they really are. I actually think they'll end up in a BCS bowl even though they won't be deserving of it.

No question that the power base has moved south. Not only have fewer of the best southern kids been willing to go to the midwest to play the location of the best HS football players has moved south. A couple of decades ago when you wanted to look for the best HS talent you could usually find it in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, etc. The south had good players but the midwest had more. Now the biggest concentrations of HS talent are in Texas (which always has been near the top if not the top) Florida, California, Louisiana, and some other warm weather states.

I still don't buy that schools in colder weather areas can't win. Ohio State had a stretch recently where they showed up in some MNC games. There is still an appeal to playing for a school that puts 100,000 people in the stands and has a history of winning. The balance of power tends to move around over time and eventually will move again.

That all said, ND has no excuse for being as pathetic as they have been over the past number of years. Their recruits may not be as good as the recruiting services have made them out to be but they still have brought in a lot of players that had offers from big time winning teams. I don't mind seeing it because I have always hated ND football (not a common sentiment for a catholic) and enjoy seeing them get their hopes up every year only to see them crushed by losing to teams they have no business losing to.

I think Holtz means the national championship of Indiana.

Couldn't agree more

Of course he does. It's blatant, and even May, Herbie, and everyone else acknowledge that he has a heavy, nonsensical ND bias. Holtz always has ND winning their matchup and he did predict ten wins last year.

Emmitt and Lou - I have no idea how the **** they have their jobs. They were great while in football, but on television, they're horrible. They make no sense, their points are worthless, and their oratory skills are horrible.

CBS though in their football preview, called out ND (I forget who exactly). If they were commissioner or in charge, they would force ND to join a conference.

The ideal scenario for college football would be if ND joined the Big East for football and that the conference then used its new football prestige (and the traditional rivalry) to entice Boston College back. That would give them a solid 10 football teams that would certainly have a worthy BCS conference champion every year. Big East football members would then be: Notre Dame, Boston College, Connecticut, Syracuse, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, South Florida, West Virginia, Louisville and Cincinnati. For my money, that's as solid a top-to-bottom football conference as the ACC, Big 10 or Pac 10 (SEC and Big 12 are on another level).

you can be sure if the Irish start out 4-0 or 5-0 it will be the most important thing of all time. don't forget Year 1 of Willingham and Weis.....quick start, more media hype than scientific proof of Martians or 8% non-fat, viagra beer.

Well lets looks at ND's schedule

Nevada: Should be a W, but Nevada is no pushover.
@ Michigan: I think Blue will be slightly better this year. Rivalry who knows
Michigan St: MSU could contend for Little 11 this year. Likely a ND loss
@ Purdue: W
Washington: W
USC: Another rivalry game, but SC should win
Boston College: See Nevada comment
Washington St: W
Navy: W
@ Pitt: Likely loss, Pitt could take Little East
Connecticut: W
@ Stanford: Cardinal is not an easy win for anybody anymore

@ Michigan - Agreed, although Michigan has under-performed against ND over the years.
MSU - This could be ND's 2nd-toughest game on the schedule. 'Nuff said.
USC - I just have this terrible feeling in my stomach that this will be one those emotional, undeserving ND victories. :puke:
BC - Meh, they should be decent.
Pitt - This looks like another fairly tough one, but this is hardly an intimidating venue to go into.
Stanford - Meh. Once again, hardly an intimidating road game.

The bottom line is this what the ND schedule consists of:
- a WAC team
- a service academy
- clearly the 2 worst teams in the Pac-10 (UW, WSU), and a 3rd that will be mediocre at best (Stanford)
- a lower-division Big East team (UConn)
- a mediocre Big-10 team (Michigan), and a poor Big 10 team (Purdue)
- only 4 true road games, 2 of which are at places that wouldn't even intimidate the lammies, and a 3rd that is only about 2 hours from their campus. That leaves one tough road game. Wow.

So we're left with one game against an elite team, and that's at home. After that you have Pitt, Michigan State, Pitt, BC, and a rebuilding Michigan team. For the progress that this program is expected to making, anything less than 9-3 should be considered a major disappointment with that schedule.
