Hansen red shirt in 2009?

Just hoping anyone can answer a question honestly. Last week after the scrimmage many CU media beat writers asked T.Hansen about the possibility of applying his red-shirt to this season. Coincidentally, that is exactly what was told to T.Hansen on Saturday by the OC. Did the media know this was going to be an option; in other words, was it disclosed to the media before T.Hansen was told? He really believed he earned the starting position after the past two weeks and the last scrimmage; when asked why this choice, again it came to experience. He did not expect this conversation with the OC. Understand it would be perfect if Cody manages successfully the offense with the superb running backs, strong offensive line, and excellent blocking by the full backs. CU would be victorious: T.Hansen would then have two years between he and Cody (because the QB situation is STILL slim compared to other Division I schools), and the Hawkin family will be successful (Cody will prove the naysayers he can be a 4-year Div. I QB). Unfortunately, if Cody does not do well or he is injured; CU burns another option of T.Hansen’s red-shirt year. SO did the media guys know this was going to be the situation before T.Hansen was told?

Hrm.... do you have a source for this information regarding the OC asking Hansen to redshirt?

yep...his brother in Southern California is a good friend and coaches on the football staff with T.Hansen's dad. All were going to the CSU game and are very bummed!

If Hansen takes the RS who is our backup? I would prefer to see Hansen start over Cody, assuming the reports from camp that they played even are true.

Hansen has a way bigger upside compared to Cody. He lacks experience, which he would not get using a RS.

This makes zero sense to me.

This also goes on to reinforce the belief that other fans/teams/recruits have that Cody gets preferential treatment because he is the coaches son (I'm not saying it's true).

If they are playing even, then it would make sense to me to start Tyler. He has much more upside then Cody.

I am guessing that the media was guessing and speculating that that move would be a good thing for TH if he didn't win the starting QB spot. Hawkins has been very tight lipped about everything around the program so I can't see a leak being the reason. JMO

If all of this is true, and I think insandiego is pretty credible, this has the makings of ugliness if CH doesn't produce. Not good IMO.

There's no way C-Hawk takes every snap this season.
And there's no body on the team besides Hansen I'd rather see QB'ing when Cody is out of the game.

Facts: Tyler thought his performance over the past two weeks were his best thus far. He stated to the media that he gets it now. The defense, the audibles, the play book and it showed in his performance. Along with his grade given per day by the OC and staff. Not to forget the support of the team.

i really hope this isn't a closed book, if he has performed up to or even better than cody, he should be starting.

ALSO, don't forget if Cody manages the team well and we run as noted by the OC, this is a great move due to lack of QB depth.

Oh man, a little less than two weeks to go and we already have a QB controversy.

I'm not doubting you insandiego. Lefty vouches for you, so it's all good.

I am really happy that Tyler is getting it. I hope that he doesn't become discouraged with the coaching staff, and he sticks with it. If he keeps working hard, he will win the starting position.

The team only selects seniors for captains...don't misunderstand the post. Cody has and is a great rep for the program. It just was an unexpected curve ball thrown T.Hansen's way.

Anybody else notice Cody wasn't voted by the team to be captain....

Tyler wants to play. Tyler thought he was earning that position and believed he was going to play. If he plays he doesn't want to be the slot QB; therefore, the red-shirt is a positive if it all works out as noted. He knows this but doesn't understand the timing of the discussion.

Thought crossed my mind also when I thought about our QB situation as I really do not have the impression that Cody isn´t going to start.

Tyler needs to realize that he's going to get the job. Once he gets a full grasp on the playbook, he'll unseat Cody. The worst thing Tyler can do right now is to start overthinking the situation, and overreacting. Pay your dues young man. You'll be the starter soon enough.

jmho.

Imagine how this will play if CH struggles...

If Cody is having a really tough year, then they put Hansen in. End of story.

Technically, Hansen could be the #2 QB and still take a redshirt. He'd only go in if Cody gets injured or plays really poorly. Hansen would still work with the 2nd team to be prepared if Cody goes down. If the game is in hand, they could always put in one of the Freshmen to hand off a few times to run out the clock.

Just so it is clear, I was the first to suggest this; I think Hawk must be reading everything I write.

I think that they were watching to see if Tyler was heads and shoulders above Cody or not. If he was, then they would take the lessor experience and go with it. If they were prety even, then Cody is a great leader and has more experience, let him play it out and put a year between him and the next best QB, which is Tyler. That way, they can have Tyler learning as Cody is a Senior next year with more game reps, then Tyler has two full years to be the guy.

While it sucks for Tyler this year, I think it does tell us that the coaches see him as the QB of Colorados future, and they want him starting for two full years. Maybe three, if he keeps practicing hard and progressing, an early injury to Cody next year could mean he is the guy for three years. And early injury to Cody this year means that Tyler breaks the redshirt again and plays IMO.

So basically the coaches would be saying Cody is the QB for the next two seasons essentially. Would kind of blow up their whole "close QB competition" BS. If experience is the major worry with Hansen, then freaking play him! How else is he going to get experience?
