When Scotty got drilled and they overturned it to a fumble, was it really a fumble? I personally thought he didn't hold on to the ball long enough to have possesion. He got drilled the minute he touched it and he dropped it. I thought it should have been incomplete from where I was standing.

Even though we got dominated the entire game, we were starting to click right there and I think we would have won like against Eastern Washington last year. That was the true turning point in the game IMO.

The DB led with his helmet and it should have been a 15 yd penalty. I saw the flag tossed in several games on saturday but it was not called.
 
It was definitely a fumble.

Scotty was turned toward the QB to make the catch. He caught the ball, turned and secured the ball, took two steps - and got popped.

From the replay, he didn't get hit immediately. He caught the ball, took two steps, then got hit helmet to helmet and dropped the ball as he was falling. That's a fumble.

The problem is that the helmet to helmet contact should have been a penalty. And because that penalty happened before the fumble, we would have kept the ball (and tacked on 15 yards).
 
It should have been a flagrant foul, and the CSU Ram should be suspended later this week for making a spearing helmet to helmet hit.

I don't think they could call a personal foul on replay, but they never should have given the ball to CSU...

They should have called it after the review, it was flagrant.
 
The problem with this being ruled a fumble is that this whistle blew. It should have been ruled a catch and that is it. In the NFL if the whistle blows the play is over and that should have been the case here. Yes it was a fumble but the whistle nullifies that part of the play.

I thought that was kindof strange, too.

After McKnight fumbled, a CSU player picked up the ball and took off running. I don't know how they determined where the ball was dead.
 
The NFL, at least, has changed the rule due to the Cutler thing last year. I'd suspect the NCAA has as well. That being said, the guy led with his helmet and hit Scotty right in the head, knocking him out. After reviewing the play, the official should have seen that. NCAA officiating just totally sucks. Also, Cody threw him a "medicine ball."
 
It was a catch and a fumble - CU was lucky CSU did not run away with the ball. It was helmet to helmet but in the speed of game play - probably hard to see that. Wonder in real speed if you can call it flagrant as the defender never knows, in a split second, where to receiver's helmet will be. TV announcer said thay could penalize after the game - maybe a suspension?? 2 years ago we would have called it a great hit. Still might if a Buff had ear holed one of the Rams instead of vice versa.

regardless...we shouldn't have to rely on one play to turn the entire game. We got our asses kicked on both side of the ball....kicked...

That was my conclusion as well, until I saw the replay. The CSU player was on the ground when he recovered the ball, so the play was dead at that point. The refs got that piece correct. The personal foul, on the other hand.....

Yea, we shouldn't be debating about 1 play being this critical against a mid-level MWC team.
 
I still think that was the turning point or dagger I should say. We were on a roll then and the momentum was clearly on our side.

I agree this play was crucial. CSU's QB was already starting to play a little tighter in the second half, and if we punch it in for seven on that drive it's suddenly 20-17 with the stadium going crazy and our defense even more fired up when they come back on the field.

Now, do we punch it in for seven? Possibly not. If we did, does CSU come right back out and start playing the more aggressive style of football they were showing in the first half and march right back down the field? Perhaps. That's why ifs are difficult. But, the play was definitely a big turning point.
