I've looked at a lot of internet sites and the more casual fans, or fans of other programs, are posting that the big problem is Hawkins playing his son at QB.
But for the longtime fan, the most discouraging thing about last night's game has to be that there were SO MANY problem areas.
1) The o-line was really seriously outplayed. CU will not win one game with that type of game out of the o-line. They will lose at Toledo, to K-State and Iowa State with an o-line that plays like it did against that CSU defense.
2) The vaunted DBs were beat badly on numerous deep balls. CU knew going in that the Rams' strength was its WRs, NOT it's running game. But the CBs seemed to be caught flat-footed, looking for a run on the deep completions. What are the coaches telling these guys?
3) Colorado had no pass rush in the first half. That allowed Stucker, a fifth-year rookie, all sorts of time. He got some confidence, and that was that. There was no blitz scheme that worked. Again, what are the coaches doing to create a pass rush?
4) Clock management was foolish. Why does it take so long to get plays in, especially when you're trailing by two touchdowns? Why does the QB have to run to the sidelines to get a play, then run back to the huddle? Is it just me or is CU the only DI program to have to do this? I can understand if you've got a new QB, or a new coaching staff or something -- you're trying to get on the same page as far as logisitics or something. But in terms of game management, the offense looked like a new staff in Game 1.
5) So much substitution. Every frickin' offensive play, there are two or three guys coming in and out. Let the skill players get a rhythm. Don't make them think so dang much about whether they're in or out on every single play. Have the cajones to name a first teamer, and stick with him for a quarter at running back and WR. OR, if you're going to substitute every play, use the subs to run in the play so you don't have your QB running to the sidelines to get the call between downs.
6) Why do you run your slowest tailback to the outside on a crucial 4th and 1? I know I'm not a coach. I know I'm just your average scum-of-the-earth internet poster. But c'mon.
I think the worst thing, as a longtime fan, is that this team is just plain BORING. I can't put my finger on why. But I get bored quickly watching the Buffs -- a team I've watched and rooted for for 35 years. It happened last year, and it started again by the end of the second quarter yesterday.
