WHAT we want from our next HC?

People keep talking about who should be next in line to coach the Buffs, my question is, regardless of who the coach is, what do we want from him?

8 wins a year? Nat'l Championship in 5 years? BCS birth every year? What are some realistic expectations? I have my own that I will post once I see some other opinions

I expect to win 8 games a year, every year. No excuses.
I expect that every 3-4 years we manage 10 wins.
I expect that every 5-6 years we are in the running for a conference championship and BCS bowl game.

History shows that we should be a perennial top 25 team. Win the conference, say, twice a decade. Top 25 recruiting classes.

Asking for more just isn't realistic given history of program and institutional/foundational problems (lack of financial resources, lack of recruiting base, rise of Texas and OU in South, historical difficulty in drawing full house, etc.)

Sacky I would only add that we need to continue the PR efforts of Bohn and Hawk to involve the alumni and students more. That work has been good but is far from done.

Right now, I´d be happy with a coach who finds a way to get the best players on the field. Bonus points if the coach also manages to figure out how to get the ball to the playmakers.

This is a load of garbage. You think Virginia Tech doesn't have bigger problems than we have? You think Miami, FL doesn't have issues? Hell, they don't even have their own stadium and the city they occupy refuses to allow them to build one.

CU is the third largest school in the Big 12. We have more alumni in Colorado than any other school. The campus is gorgeous. The city is fantastic. The weather is the best in the whole country. There's not another school in the world that has that. Facilities & funding could be better, but they're improving. I have no doubt that President Benson & Chancellor DiStephano are big supporters of the athletic department. There's no schism between academia and athletics at CU any more than at any other large university. All this talk about these institutional deficiencies we have to overcome is nothing but a bunch of lame ass excuses.

I would like the team ot to lose to CSU ever, I would like to beat Nebraska once every other year, I would like not to lose to Montana State University, Iowa State University, nearly lose to Eastern Washington University. I would like not to lose to Baylor when they are Baylor and not this abnormal flare-up they are having at present time. I would like to have a real quarterback on the roster, not a coaches son who isn't a Big 12 caliber QB.

I would like to win more than 1 road game every 2 years.

Most of all, I would like the team to be fun to watch, competitive in the Big 12, and at least respectable. I would like them to play (at least) to their talent level.

No one is asking for national championships. No one is asking for 10 wins every year.

Most CU fans realize that we aren't Texas, Oklahoma, or even Nebraska. They just want the team to be better than bad.

Our current head coach was hired to rebuild the program.

Our next head coach needs to motivate players, put our best talent on the field, and call plays that give us the best chance to win.

I think it's hard to demand a certian number of wins each year (which is another reason it was so dumb of Hawkins to even bring up the 10 and no...do you think Urban Meyer or Pete Carroll said any dumb $hit like that? Heck no!), so other than being a competitive team who is in the running for Big XII North every year, I don't want to be distraught with the coaching and effort after a loss. Take FSU last night - yes they lost, but they went down fighting with everything they had. If we lost to CSU in a similar manner, I wouldn't even be mad.

I agree with that, and hawkins does not bring that

It's one thing to catch lightning in a bottle, which is basically what happened to CU with Mac. It's another thing to expect a school whose athletic budget ranks 43rd nationally to be some kind of perennial Top 10 team.

The "Boulder is a nice town" argument always cracks me up. You really think 18 year old football and basketball players care?

Hell yes they care. Why wouldn't they? They care about lots of stuff. Their physical environment is a component. Not the only one, but certainly on the list.

Some schools, like OSU, need to have a freakish budget in order to keep up. We have advantages they don't have. So yes, having a budget ranked #43 nationally doesn't mean we can't compete.

Also coaches who are contemplating moving their families to a new town to take a job might care. I really believe location was a major factor for Bzdelik taking over a hoops program in worse shape than the football program.

This is a great way to look at what DH has done. You're right, we a coach that now take the program to the next level. With the talent we have on this team, we should be in contention for the North title every year.

Just be competitive. We play against one of the top five schools every year in OU or Texas. I personally don't think Nebraska is too far beyond given the demands of their fan base on coaching and winning.

If we can be competitive EVERY YEAR with OU/Texas and then whatever Big 12 school comes up as a spoiler (Mizzou, Kansas, OSU, Nebraska, Tech), then I will be a happy camper.

Keep in mind that the Big 12 champ often goes to the NC game.

DADGUMMIT people it is ONE lose, your season is not over yet, STAND BEHIND YOUR TEAM.

If later in the year, well then call for heads to fall.

This is from a HUSKER fan that almost lost Dr. Tom to the Buffs. It was only one game, hell for all we know you might win out:smile:

This is what I expect in a head coach.

1. Players playing to and above their natural ability. They play with fire, emotion and strive to be their personal best. At all times. It comes from leadership, and that starts with the HC.

2. The players play smashmouth football. You may play us, even in our own home. You may even beat us. But you will never, ever take us lightly. You'll be more bruised after playing us than anybody else you face this year. You WILL respect us.

3. You keep the fans involved. Good media relations, open practices, and calls to us for more support even though we've given all we can. And we still find a way to give more.

4. Recruiting. This is ultimately the lifeblood of a program. It is if nothing else, an area that has a lot of emphasis put on it.

4a. Coaching. We may not get a class full of 4* and 5* players, but our players will get the best coaching in the country. i.e. -- our players will be contenders for All-American status, regardless of their high school star rating, because they will receive outstanding coaching. Player development is the second portion of recruiting. I don't care if you're a 5* HS athlete. Without good coaching, you won't progress. I expect our coaches to coach very, very well.

5. Win or lose (mostly wins), the fans like us have such an incredible game day experience, including the product on the field, that we're itching for more and all we can get. Nothing in life is better than gameday.

6. Never throw the student-athlete players under the bus. If they lose, it's because the other team was truly Top 10 or the coaches didn't get it done.

7. No excuses. None.

I want the next coach to win ALL the games we are supposed to win (CSU, Toledo, Wyoming, Iowa State, Kansas State, etc.) and occasionally jump up and win a game we probably AREN'T supposed to (Florida State, Texas, Oklahoma).

Compete at what level, is the question?

Sportsfan said he wanted to be a Top 25 team every year, which I think is a fairly reasonable expectation. You proceeded to call his post "garbage", so I'm assuming you want A LOT more than that....

And I agree that environment is only a component. It's like the sound system in a car, it's a nice perk, but for most people it's not the overriding factor in deciding which car to buy. If I'm looking at two cars that are nearly identical a nicer sound system might be the tipping factor, but if the car with the better stereo drives like ****, I'm gonna buy the car that drives nicer. It's a consideration, not a primary factor.

Too many CU fans act like being located in a "nice" town ought to suffice as a primary deciding factor for getting athletes/coaches to come here, that's all I'm saying.

Ummm, no. What he said was...

The part about being top 25 team wasn't garbage. The excuse about lack of institutional support is garbage. It's a lame excuse. This, by the way, was why I didn't include the part about being a top 25 team in my quote, because it wasn't garbage at all.

Every school has positives and negatives. Our positives can't be duplicated anywhere else. No school will have everything, but CU has enough so that it's a reasonable expectation that we be competitive every year. This isn't Iowa State. It's not Wyoming, or UTEP, or New Mexico State or Washington State. We have a lot to offer.

Seems pretty reasonable to me. We certainly dont have that now.

i would like to go to a bottom tier (or better) bowl game every year with a top 45 (or better) recruiting class every year. and have every other fanbase in the nation laugh at my team for only one season (or less) during every 4 season timespan.
unfortunately, hawkins has not met any of these requirements
