I know it has been discussed in other threads, but does anyone actually believe signing Cody Hawkins was a good move for this program? I simply cannot believe it has been anything other than a failure. When Cody Hawkins is your "best" option, you have major issues at QB. Sure, lots of issues have contributed to piss poor QB recruiting, but the nepotism issue has always loomed large in the background.

I never wanted to believe in the nepotism until now.

I think that at the time, it was a good move. We didn't have a QB, and he was serviceable that first season. The big mistake (and maybe a result of having Cody at QB1 for a season) was not having someone ready to take the reigns last year.

If you go back to when this happened, this program was flat out devoid of QB's in the system. We relied on a string of JC guys before Klatt, then Klatt who was about 25 at the time, and then we had Hawk's first year disaster at QB.

We need a JC guy and then a couple QB's who were young and could grow into it.

We got Cody the first year, and frankly, he was pretty much ready to play right away. Sort of like a Juco.

We never got the other guy or two. Year two, we got Ballenger, now gone. Year three, we got Hansen... Neither were highly rated.

Reality though, imo, there was a lot wrong on Sunday, but QB was not even close to a big issue. Blocking was the issue.

Man - is Denver Johnson and Kiesau going to get this fixed? That is my question because the QB situation is a long term problem with no quick fixes.

I don't know if I could have handled going through 2007 with B-Jax at QB.

:ahhhhh:

On the other hand, we still had White on the roster in 2006 when Hawk, in his infinite wisdom, decided that Cox was our best option at QB. We should have known something was wrong right then and there.

Hindsight is a bitch.

Same here, I didn't believe the nepotism issue either, but now I can't help but think that's the case. And as you point out, there wasn't a serious challenger to Cody either last year or this year.

Reality here: when was the last good QB recruited to CU?

Barnett relied on Pesavento and Moschetti to bridge him in the post-Neuheisel era. Then his cupboard was bare once again and Klatt decided to give up baseball and solve a big dilemma. Klatt was a gift, albeit only an adequate one.

Barnett left what behind? That's not the recipe to winnning football.

with our legacy, I can't understand why the blue chippers are lined up. Nepotism? How about they are confused as to what CU runs for an offense?

make you wonder if coach hawk has a short leash on these two

I keep hearing this and cannot help but be baffled. How many games during the 2+ seasons of Cody as a starting QB have we had the better QB on the field? Be honest, not many. You think it might be more than just a coincidence we have lost a lot of games during that time period?

I don't know what White's issues were but he handled himself well against Clemson and almost brought us all the way back. That right there was reason enough to give him the nod over career backup Cox. I think hawk made (and continues to make) unorthodox decisions to send the message that he's calling the shots. Isn't that comforting to know?

he may not have been the biggest problem on Sunday, but over the last 2+ yrs he has

I don't think its been bad, but I have to believe opponents have used Little Hawk position on the team to negatively recruit against us..

Dan Hawkins has failed more to get Little Hawk some players to throw too than Little Hawk playing bad at QB..

He's not great, but he's not the worst.

The issue of the offense is much bigger than Little Hawk.

I'll ay it this way. CH is serviceable if everything else is clicking. Since it obviously isn't (i.e. blocking, run game, defense), CU is in deep doo-doo if he really is the best QB on the roster. Four years of recruiting ought to get better results....

Cody is a problem but he's not the only problem. Miller and solder haven't showed anything near the hype they get.

It all starts up front. I don't know that we've ever had a reliable front either. Don't get me wrong, Cody is serviceable on a good day. Never going to be all-conference. Not even close.

I just don't think it was our biggest problem. Having no blocking and wR's who couldn't line up right was a huge issue. CSU's DLine ate our lunch.

I also don't think nepotism was the issue as much as our legacy. Helfrich could have gotten someone here like the sophomore at Boise State. nobody wanted that guy and this staff frankly failed to recruit anyone to step in. The year we got Ballenger, we needed two key guys. We ended up shut out.

that's a good point. I just saw Miller graded out above Adkins and that's it. OMG. Where is Behrens? He got beat out by Adkins?

Cody could be a servicable QB under the right conditions. CU won many games with QB's that were only slightly better than Cody.

The problem with those other teams is we had coaches that understood the skills and stregths of the team. They adjusted the game plan to take advantage of the strengths they had.

The line blocking was very bad. That said all off season they talked about "running down field." "Power running." Making everyone think that we were going to run the ball.

DS gets 1 carry. The first series on O was a run up the middle and two passes. Regardless of the score in the first half, there was plenty of time to establish the run, and get the line playing together.

If Hack does not want to even try to run, Cody throwing 40 plus attempts per game will not result in anything good.

No way the tackles should have graded higher than Miller.. If that's true, the coaches really are morons.. They were god awful in the game along with Adkins..

I think behrens should move back in there, adkins got manhandled sunday. Heck, we could use devin head right about now , tuioti is missed also.

I have also been wondering whether the Hawkins era wasn´t doomed from the moment Cody signed his LOI.

Question for the recruiting nicks ... we were in Landry Jones´ final 2 and Jones was one of the top QB recruits in the country. Except for Jones and Hinder, has this staff seriously gone after another "top QB recruit"?

I was thinking about this the other day - where would this program be right now if Cody decided to dial in BSU's fax number instead of CU's on LOI day? I really don't know the answer....

Recruiting is obviously the big variable. Maybe one of the hard-core recruiting people might know what QBs we've looked at in prior years that might have come here if not for Cody's presence. If nothing else, I think you have to figure Jordan Wynn might be here and might be starting as a true freshman. But considering what the 2007 and 2008 QB situations would have looked like without Cody (Nelson in 2007, Ballenger in 2008 as the starters?) I think you have to figure there's a good chance somebody other than the guys we have now would have been brought in, probably in the 2007 class...

But would Hawk have run the same dink and dunk sideways offense he is running now if Cody, with his lack of elite arm strength, weren't the QB? Would the staff have focused more on being a power running team if Cody weren't going to be the QB putting up all the passes this offense has called for? We'll probably never know, but I hate to think that Hawk has really gone that far in structuring the program around his son....

When opposing teams scheme for our offense during the week, what are they truly scared of with Cody?

I thnk you're wrong. I watched every play on my DVR several times and most plays there was either Adkins or Miller getting beat inside by the pass rush. It's harder to tell on a lot of running plays with the angles we get. Miller was really struggling but Adkins was flat out beat often.

Remember it takes one missed block to blow it all up.

What were they scared of from Klatt? Did the Heisman guy scare BYU on Saturday.

We all agree he is not the most gifted, but he's not the biggest issue.

We've been in on several every year and they've gone elsewhere. The list is long. There's two at UCLA right now. It's not for trying and we'll never know if nepotism had anything to do with it.

If we didn't get Cody, who would have played in 2007? 2008? We would have had to go the JC route for sure.

Klatt was more accurate than Cody. He also was taller. So there's two things he has over Cody right there.

There is no doubt that there are issues all over the place on offense, but enough of this crap giving Cody a pass. He is not doing much to help this offense along.
