Hit on McKnight ruled illegal...

by B12 supervisor of officials.

"Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins said Big 12 Conference supervisor of officials Walt Anderson confirmed a third-quarter play in which wide receiver Scotty McKnight was hit while catching a ball over the middle should have been a helmet-to-helmet penalty on Colorado State in the season opener Sunday"

It won't change our L to a W but I'd like to see that Lammie have to sit a game or two suspension.

It was illegal. But it wasn't dirty. **** happens at full speed. Kid doesn't deserve to sit.

Hits like that can be crippling. I don't want to see anyone get knocked out or worse while on the field. These are 18-22 year olds and it'd be a damn shame if they suffered life-long consequences for playing a game. I hope he does get suspended.

Wish they would have called it correctly during the game. That turnover was HUGE.

It was a football play. That's football, it happens. Sit a game or two for that hit? No way.
Read the new rule:

" [FONT=&quot]In addition, if the officials call fouls for targeting defenseless players or using the crown of the helmet and the player is not ejected, the rules mandate a conference review. Furthermore, if the review by the conference reveals actions that should have resulted in a personal foul but were not called, the conference may impose sanctions."

Since the lammies are in the MWC I guess it doesn't really matter if the B12 says the player should sit but it's possible he could see a suspension. I guess it's going to depend if the conferences want to send a message or not. I think they should because that play could have resulted in a very serious injury for either/both players. It's just football. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

To me it looks like he hit McKnights shoulder first, but he did lead with his helmet. Tough being a safety and walking that fine line between being aggressive and not drawing laundry.

I couldn't agree more. After we came out and scored after the half and our D stepped up, I felt we were back in the game and had a solid chance to win it. As soon as the review came down and it was ruled a fumble, I knew we only had a 5-10% chance of a comeback.

I'm not saying that call was the reason we lost the game. We played like trash for most of it and there are a lot of things that went wrong. Still though, an undeserved red zone turnover like that is pretty much the most deflating thing that can happen to a team just when it seems like things are starting to click.

That hit completely killed momentum. I'm just glad Scotty is ok.

Whether we would have won if it had been called or just never happened will never be known.

It does nothing to excuse the first 30 minutes of play.

They can look at every game every week played and suspend players all the time.....it is football, dont want to get hit, run cross country

Great, that really helps us now. Mutha fuka!!

This season is really starting off with a bang! :bang:

A spearing helmet to helmet hit like that can easily lead to lifelong paralysis and/or death of a student-athlete.

There is a reason it should be a penalty, and a reason a suspension is warranted.

If a CU player did that they should be held to the same standard.

Any non-suspension of the the player in question is the equivalent of the NCAA having a complete and utter disregard for the safety of its student athletes, IMHO.

Exactly. Football is not Rollerball. Players need to know that tempting paralysis for themselves or others is not appropriate.

I agree completely, this ain't intramurals. Go play frat flag football.
If all this protection crap continues, it won't be a contact sport.
That was just a good hard play, that kid wasn't trying to hurt anyone.
The speed at which plays happen make it impossible to pull up or change an angle when you are going full speed.

I was taught in pee wee football that you never lead with your head. Any player who got caught was benched for the game. Way too dangerous. So if you're taught back then that this is wrong, there is no reason why this type of play should be dismissed as a good hard play. I'll bet you he was looking for a flag after he hit Scotty. He knew what he did.

I agree with the new rule.

It's hard to change an angle when you launch yourself at the player head first. Players should almost never leave their feet imo.

Your'e talking about a matter of inches between a shoulder pad blow and a helmet to helmet. It's a violent sport. How many players leave their feet during the course of a game? Probably every player at one time or another. You play with instincts, not a calculated thought process.

You play with both. These rules aren't just made up by a bunch of nobodies. Last time I checked it was a board led by Barry Alverez and Mike Belotti.

You never lead with your head. That's exactly what that young man did.

That's your opinion, there are 50% that see it the opposite way. If you are going to lead with your shoulder, you have to bend you body forward. The laws of physics make it impossible for your head not to follow. I'm done - think what you want.

So 50% say we should disregard the rules? Have you even played football? You are taught not to lower your head when you go tackle. For your own safety (no better way to break your neck), as well as because you'll cause a concussion on the other player.

You can't hit someone with the crown of your helmet. That's against the rules, and he should be suspended.

Yes, I played football in high school. I didn't say to disregard the rules. IF somebody intentionally spears someone they should be suspended. I don't think it was intentional. The 50% is not saying to disregard the rules, it's the 50% that think it wasn't an intentional hit. IF it was intentional why wasn't the CSU player suspended? If you have ever played football - you had some helmet to helmet contact, 99.5% of the time it is unintentional.

You want to tell me where I say to disregard the rules?
You what to tell me where I say to lower your head to make a tackle?
Don't make up crap on the fly. If you want to criticize me fine, but don't make up bull $hit.
Act like a man.

So was the Texas hit on Klatt just a "good, hard play?" The CSU kid didn't even put his arms up. He just launched himself at Scotty's head and connected then laughed at Scotty as he lay knocked out. Just a good, hard play? Was Jack Tatum's hit on Darrel Stingly just a good, hard play? If this were the NFL, the kid would be fined $40k for his "good, hard play." What really pisses me off, though, is the idot official saw the whole thing on replay and awarded CSU the ball. If, on review, an official sees a flagrant foul like that, he should have the discretion of calling it. That call, IMO, very likely cost CU a chance to win.

A lot of whining...

Like I said, sure, throw the flag. But suspend for THAT play? Nope. This is football. Some of you are mistaking this board for the skiing board.

Was it a dirty play? In my best guess, no, not at all.

The same ones who want the Ram suspended had no problem when our safety drilled the Husker WR just before halftime last year. Nor did you have any problem when the Husker QB was sacked from around his helmet/head area.

Throw the flag, do not suspend, unless it's intentional or blatant.

Well that's just dandy. Thank you Mr. back judge for screwing the pooch and killing one of the few drives the Buffs put together.

If anyone should be suspended for that play it should be Cody. To throw the ball high and behind the receiver over the middle of the field is just begging to get your receiver killed.

Hey Internet Tough Guy [tm], I'm a man! I'm 40!

Dude, you're saying the play was "a good hard play" when the guy lead with the crown of his helmet. Now you're saying that you never said you should lower your head and hit with the crown of the helmet. Keep backpedaling.

There's nothing that pisses me off more than after the fact refereeing and the old "i'm sorry we f'd up routine".....is it going to give us the ball back @ the CSU 5 with a chance to keep momentum going & prolly win the game? NO, so why do they ever say anything. It doesn't do anyone any good.

Here is the thing. I'm not going to call it a "dirty" play, because that implies "intent." I don't know if you can go that far here. And I don't think the kid should be suspended.

What bugs me is that the official had no choice, under the rules as I understand them, to disallow the turnover based on an illegal hit. All he could rule on was whether or not it was a turn over and could not, I don't think, consider the hit. I believe that should be changed to something to the effect of "if, in reviewing a turnover, it is determined that the turnover was caused by an illegal play by the opposing team, the official may, at that time, penalize the opposing team for the illegal play, negating the turnover" or something to that effect.
