Gary Barnett was interviewed on 1510 AM in Denver this morning. Hear the podcast at:

http://www.thescore1510.com/

highlights:

cu downfall a combination of rookies in oline, new o coordinator, new oline coach. new o coordinator may have panicked a bit. kids feeling alot of pressure, and now in some ways the pressure is off. Good to be on the road this week, playing a game fast is better.

cody hawkins a very adequate qb in the right system. can't ask him to do too much

darrell scott: is there pressure for hawkins to play him? no question with a highly recruited player like scott there is pressure to play him. more pressure from fan base than from within the room. coaches and players know who deserves to play. Scott probably is not ready to be the go to guy. Coaches play the best players, the guys who perform in practice.

tough to get cu players up for the game, to respect csu

fairchild did a great job of coaching, rams were ready to play and cu wasn't

biggest improvement in a team is between the 1st and 2nd game. we always wanted a game before csu as did sonny

on other teams the first weekend:

surprise team of the weekend was missouri - they may even be better at qb now which is saying alot

watch out for air force the rest of the year

usc looks as good as they've ever looked

I miss him on the sidelines and his ability to get these kids ready to play ball

That is what Barnett had over Hawkins. Barnett beat the teams he was supposed to and could get a team ready on gameday. Only problem was his coaching in big games particulalry at the end of his tenure.

GB IMO was a good coach and a pretty good recruiter, but when the scandal that wasn't hit, he got paranoid and his recruiting went into the crapper. That's what made a change necessary.

Barney's wheelhouse at CU was taking his 6-9 win team and beating the other guy's 6-9 win team 2/3 times, seems like in retrospect.

Also worth noting that Barnett was making a pretty good bit more than Hawkins does. At least the extension we signed Hawk to was not huge like that one.

Hawkins' staff makes much more than Barnett's, I'm guessing it would be close to a wash taking the entire staff compensation into account.

What was Barney's record against the goats?

Atleast we were relevant when GB was the head coach, we may have lost some games we should have won but we weren't the laughing stock of the big 12 north and we competed well against the likes of Oklahoma and Texas before his last few years here.

STFU about how great GB was!!!!! You're making me sick. That ****er is a huge reason why we havent had any success in years. How many OL were on the team when he left? How did his QBs pan out? All of you whining about Hawk's lack of emotion forget about GB on the sidelines of the UT games as our boys were getting ass pounded on national TV? STFU Barney, unless someone asks you about your golf game, and your sweet ****ing buyout.

Good point. Of course the distinction would be that the assistants were on 1-year contracts, so their contracts were not crippling. Barnett's contract was not quite the same.

I am not a Barnett homer, he had to go. However, Hawk is making me sick.

Again, I miss Mac:thumbsup:

Barnett left the program in a big hole, talent wise. It was obvious in his last year that the elites of college football had passed us by. We simply couldn't compete with Texas & Oklahoma. They had too much speed, strength & depth.

Hawkins has addressed those talent issues. I truly believe that other than QB, we have talent that could play on any team in the Big 12. What Hawkins has not done is take that talent and mold it into a cohesive football team. It's still a catch-as-catch-can in almost every aspect of the game. On offense, it's "well, let's see if this works". On defense, very much the same thing.

I'd still prefer Hawkins to Barnett. Our national reputation under Barnett was atrocious. Now it's non-existant, but at least it's not bad. That's an improvement in my book.

Im not calling you out, 'leash. I cant believe that people are pining for the days of Barney. All we need now is for some dip**** to remind us how much we miss Chuck because we had a higher profile then.

Easy Tex, I don't think anybody is saying GB ended up great at CU, but he did have some decent success early on. IF, and that is a big if, the scandal had not hit, the bare cupboard may not have happened. I was glad he left, for no other reason than he had become ineffective.

Barnett sucked and he put CU in an image hell. Barnett also won games, somethink tater hasn't figured out yet.

No, I would not want barnett.

**** barnett. He's gone, and he left our program in a ****ing disastrous state talent-wise and reputation-wise. He got a wonderful golden parachute that could allow him to never work another day in his life.
