Bohn: we're not about to give up on Dan Hawkins

From Kiszla's column.

What does Bohn say to angry CU alums that insist Hawkins should be fired right here, right now?

"How many times did Texas and Oklahoma take to get the right coach? About four. But we're not about to give up on Dan Hawkins," Bohn said.

This was the worst loss since a 70-3 drubbing by Texas led Bohn to fire Gary Barnett in 2005.

"I know there's anger. How are we going to respond? Are we going to start knee-jerking?" Bohn said. "If we decided it was time to go the Johnny Next Coach route, what kind of message would that send?"

A year ago, Hawkins was given a contract extension through the 2012 football season. If that now looks like a colossal waste of money, then it should be charged to Bohn.

"If we're guilty of anything, it's putting on a mask that has prevented us from saying how deep a hole this program was in," Bohn said.

It's no longer the CU football coach alone on the hot seat.

Bohn hired Hawkins.

If they're incapable of cleaning up this mess in a hurry, then the jobs of both Hawkins and Bohn will be in jeopardy.

If Hawk is fired, Bohn should be gone also.. He not only hired him but extended him..

I don't understand the Oklahoma & Texas quote. It seems illogical. What bearing does them making the wrong hiring decision 2, 3 or 4 times have to do with Dan Hawkins?

Seriously, help me out. Bohn's a smart guy and I'm really not understanding this.

I'm a little lost on that one myself. If anything it would seem to call for moving on to the next try in order to be closer to finding the right one.

OTOH, it could be taken as a defense of his performance if Hawk doesn't make it... "Hey, look at OU and Texass - they hired some bad coaches too!!"....

One of the weirdest quotes I've ever read. Howeve, if I were in the fire Dan Hawkins camp, I'd take that as good---reading between the lines??? Maybe. I take it as, "get off me, I fu*ked up---even OU went through the John Blakes and Howard S's before they got Stoops. But, uhhh, this is in the paper? We arent giving up on Hawkins"

Weird ass quote.

Yeah. I see the OU (blake, schnellenberger) comparison but Texas was always decent under John Mackovic. We're a LONG way from being decent. I'm praying we win a game this year.

Do these two delusional people understand that you MUST win games? What do they think, that they have 15 years to get it right?

We are screwed because bohn thinks hawk is doing the best he can and that this building process will take time and fans have to be patient.

Bohn, when you have 20k in the seats for wyoming and A&M, we;ll see how you feel.

They've lost the team and fans.

to me his point is quite simple. The grass isn't always greener.

Hawkins was highly thought of as great hire and was a highly sought after coach by other BCS programs like ND and Oregon and Oregon St before he came to CU. It's not like they reached with this hire. I know many of you feel like he can't finish what he started here, but the Hawkins had one of the highest winning percentages of any active coach before he took our job. So if a highly successful coach, who was thought of as a hot commodity by other top programs, is not he right hire for CU, what makes everyone thing the next coach will be? The next hire might just be OU's equivalent to Howard Schnellenberger.

Sometimes getting what you wished for is not always the best thing.

Bohn is trying to cover his ass obviously.. This guy thinks he has a lifetime appointment as Athletic Director or something at CU..

If Hawk has to go, Bohn should be gone also. The guy's resume of picking coaches is dreadful. He shouldn't be given another chance to pick another one.

Then what do you do? Keep hawkins in charge while the football program gets even worse? I don't want another coaching search, I want him to back up his talk but he can't and never will. So now what? The first thing that he should have said was we as a coaching staff did a poor job but once again, he makes some delusional statement like" I know we are doing things right"

I don't know that anyone is saying that the next guy would definitely return CU to the glory days or anything. It's more like it's obvious that the current coach isn't getting the job done so let's at least give someone else a chance. At the very least, it would re-energize fans, boosters and potential recruits for a year or 2.

Yes you're right. Let's stay the course. Hawk is 13-26. He is a loser in the truest definition of the word (he loses far more than he wins) but we will continue to give him the benefit of the doubt come hell or high water.

You can keep putting sugar on this turd but it won't make it sweeter.

Part of me wants to fire Hawk and part of me agrees with Chilly that Hawk should be given the time to finish what he started. I think his case would be more acceptable if we weren't being blown off the field by non-BCS teams in his 4th year.. I'm neutral right now. I think the season is lost, but I want to see if we get better as the season goes on before I'm totally against Hawk.

I thought we would be better by now, but its obvious Hawk hasn't gotten the talent in here yet. Whether its changing recruiting bases, changing recruiting styles, getting new coaches or whatever, something needs to be done to get more players in here or there will eventually be a coaching change.

I have said it, and I will continue to say it even thought no one seems to want to hear it. Hawkins deserves 5 years. That is what it will take for him to turn the corner. The reality is, he still has a young team that has a lot of potential talent, but they are still learning how to compete. During the game today they mentioned how it seemed like the light finally went on for DS and that he had the best practice he has ever had. They said in passing that Hawkins told him that is the effort the needs from him in every practice.

This is what he means by doing this right. He understands the two loses are "right", but he also understands that he is teaching these kids how to give 100% all the time, even during practice. That IS doing things "right". He is teaching them that just having talent alone isn't enough to succeed and he is going to play the kids that show what they have in practice. What does this mean. Well for some like J-Fly the will leave, but for a large majority of them the light bulb will go off and when it does, this team will not only have talent, and upperclassman experience, but they will also be a team that knows how to give 100% at all times. And when this happens special things will happen for CU football.

Does this mean you give Hawkins a pass for ever to do it "right" NO. but you give him more than 3 seasons and 2 games. For me the number is 5. That is when he will have had a full recruiting cycle. If he can't get the kids to respond to his message by their senior year, then I agree, it's not going to work for him at CU.

Are... you coach hawkins? Are you typing this from your hotel room? I thought there would be no more excuses this year. Oops.

Yep and as soon as this guy start losing the boosters will want another change, then another, then another. Which is exactly his point.

For your 2000th post, it would be cool if you admitted you are Misty.

Seriously.

The guy is 105–49–1. Seems like he has won at lot more in life than he has lost.

Please enlighten us though as to what exactly you have done in your life that makes you such a big winner, other than point fingers and complain.

I think you're right Chilly, if we let this guy some more time I think things will come together. I mean our WR's are pretty bad, but that probably has to do alot with losing Josh Smith as a deep threat and not having Simas as our #1 Wide Out. The O-line should get better as the season progresses, I see some improvement already. Scott looked good today and when Stewart gets back we'll be set to go. As for the D, I've got no answer.

He has shown no improvement. Now it's 5 years? I wonder how this would fly at texas, ohio state, usc, florida etc...He'd be bought out and we don't have the $$$$.

He keeps losing and you want to keep giving him another year, and another etc...

Show some type of improvement from year 1 to year 4, if that's too much to ask you're as crazy as him.

You can keep putting sugar on this turd but it won't make it sweeter.

Please point to one post where I have said the on field performance is acceptable and doesn't need to be fixed? The only difference here is that I think Hawkins deserves the chance to do that.

The rest of you just seem to want insult the guy and not even admit job as coach at CU has been more than just about being a coach. He has had to change a culture that was 20 years in the making.

He's 13-26 at CU.

3 straight losing seasons with #4 coming up.

Since the win vs WV, cu is 2-9

Is he a loser as a person, no. Delusional yes. As a football coach at cu he is a loser, 13-26 can't be disputed.

 Here comes the culture. I'll take MAC over hawk any day.

The only "culture" hawk has brought is losing football and it looks like the players are getting used to it.

I agree 100% on the D. The one move Hawkins made that I thought was really bad on his part was getting rid of coach Hankowitz. BSU never had good D when he was there, they were more about outscoring you, and my biggest fear was that would come to CU. I hate that foolish 3 man rush. It hasn't worked in 4 years, Throw that crap out the window please. I understand why he got rid of Coach Hank, but I honestly think if he would have kept him around this team would be farther ahead than they are, just because our D could have kept us in some of these games
