CU DEFENSE, How can it be fixed?

DL- No pass rush or push up front.

LB- No pressure from this group and the TE burning a few certain guys.

CB- Only group playing decent

S- Too slow and out of position

Do we need to move Jalil back to safety? What do we do to fix the DL?

How do we stop giving up the big plays?

Thoughts?

I would start with hustle. I believe the low point was on 3rd and long and we gave up a QB draw for a 60 yard touchdown was the most pitifull display of a lack of hustle I have ever witnessed.

The CB are playing decent?
ya... Jsmith looks AWESOME, and so does burney. CB got burned on their first TD cause he was up against a 6'5" Wideout.... He had perfect coverage, but was just physically outmatched. That is on the coaches to put him in that position.

The idea of moving Jalil back to S makes a lot of sense... Perkins looked BAD and slow, Mahnke looked HURT and slow, and Polk looked LOST and fast...

Our CBs need to stop playing underneath and in press coverage. Jimmy Smith is the only big, physical CB we have that can do that well. When Brown is outmatched physically we have to put Burney or Smith. They should have been our strong side CB for last night's game.

Our safeties need to learn how to read the play. Everyone used to give our safeties a lot of slack last year, but I would kill to have them back now. They may not have had the size or speed, but they could sniff out plays better.

We need to start playing more zone. However, it all starts with getting some pressure and containment upfront.

Fire Ron Collins.

He should have been fired after the Missouri game last year. How you survive giving up 58 points and then saying you wouldn't change a thing if you had to do it all over again? :wow:

Collins does not coach a position. He does absolutely nothing in recruiting. And he is failing as a Defensive Coordinator. Bohn needs to step up and fire this guy. If Hawkins resigns out of protest/loyalty, all the better.

agreed. Horrible play calling. we would do what worked, then go away from it and go back to what didn't work. Plus how he used his Cbs was AWFUL.

Fat chance. Hawkins wouldn't leave. He'd have nowhere to go. There isn't a program in the nation that would hire him in their right mind.

We do need a new defensive coordinator though. Badly. Now!!!

I wasn't very impressed with the intensity on the field. Other than Sandersfield causing the fumble I didn't see many real aggressive, big league hits.

While ultimately Hawk is to blame for everything, I think the defensive staff, starting with Collins should be big time red faced over what I consider to be the poorest performance on the field last night.

They need to do a better job of masking the blitz. Toledo would call their play, come to the line, check out the defense, audible. But our guys would show blitz preaudible, and then actually blitz. Toledo knew exactly what we were doing, and their O coordinator read us like a book.

Collins needs fired. He has absolutely not progressed as a coordinator. We saw alot of the same sh!+ that was an epic fail against Mizzou last year, and CSU last week.

Agreed - Collins and Bandison NEED to be fired. Cabral and Brown are proven coaches, but Collins and Bandison have showed absolutely nothing. Get rid of them - our linebackers and safeties are out of position a lot though it seems...which seems to negate my point about Cabral and Brown. Still...I keep them two and fire Collins and Bandison. They're not very good recruiters either.

You guys are now understanding why Syko has been railing about DL recruiting for so many years. How many of our starters would actually start for other Big 12 teams?

It cannot really be fixed because the talent on the DL is average at best. OUr depth there is non-existent as well. Add in the fact that we are very undersized and you get dominated week in and week out.

As far as schemes go, I can't actually say what they need to do to improve it. We're so bad that it's hard to say if we have people in bad positions schematically or if our guys are making mental mistakes to get out of position. Either problem is on the coaching staff, but how you would fix it is going to be different.

I'll start with something simple: how about teaching our guys how to ****ing tackle correctly? Maybe? I remember at least two crushing third downs we gave Toledo a first down by missing one or more tackles behind the line to gain. I saw a couple of good hits by Burney, and Smart made some safe tackles, but literally everyone else seems to have a problem breaking down and making a hit. It's embarrassing. If you can't even tackle properly, it doesn't matter what scheme you are running or where you position your players.

Agreed. I want some big hits, but there were times when we went for it and whiffed. Just make the tackle when it's 3rd down and don't worry about going for the big hit or strip. Frustrating.

The arm tackling is a continuation from last season. I talked to a couple of fans after the OSU game. They sat near Matt Russell. Matt said this might be the worst tackling team he ever saw.

Im not one to call for a coach's head but Collins should be demoted or fired period. The crap I saw last night was high school bs. Arm tackling, as Valdez pointed out, no adjustments at all, guys are still clueless as to where to line up, etc. etc. etc. Our guys dont know the basic fundamentals on tackling or anything else on the defense for that matter. Dline play is awful but, honestly, I think safety is worse. Perkins dont have a damn clue as to what is expected and is flat footed in coverage most of the time. Tipping our blitzes and not changing up is pitiful, no coverage changes when they are beating you the same way everytime is also pitiful. I know we are lacking speed and overall talent but, knowing that, those guys should have tackling and their assignments down to a T. It is the coaches job to have the guys fundamentally sound even with a lack of talent, that should be a given.

very well, fire Collins now and perhaps Brandison too, then wait until how the rest of the season goes, and if there isnt at least a 6-6 finish then fire Hawking as well.

pfft ya dominated by ****ing middle of the pack MWC and MAC teams!! Just wait till we face the Big 12!!!

I thought the safeties in particular last night were absolutely atrocious...slow, totally unaware of what was going on, and Toledo exploited that big time...also, the defense seems to suffer from the same pre-snap woes that the offense does - it takes forever to get the scheme in, shuffle players, and get set for the snap. On one occasion in the third quarter, Toledo was ready to snap the ball and no one was even close to being in position defensively on our side (I have a picture of this, I'll try to upload it in a day or two when I have that capability...)

Get better players.. These players on defense are NOT BIG 12 Caliber and I question if they are even Div 1 caliber of players.. I really don't know what the staff is looking at when they are offering these kids scholarships.

And please, the Corners are decent?.. You've got to be kidding. They have been constantly getting beat deep in two games. They are no better than the rest of the defense.

The DL is a joke. we have no speed or power at all at any of the positions.

. If it wasn't for Hippo and Nicholas (who were okay Big 12 players) for the past 3 years it would have been much worse. They covered it up for a few years. Now the floodgates have opened because Hawk hasn't mined the JC route for DL and the high school route to get quality DL in here.

I'm no fan of Collins, but he doesn't have a lot to work with.. Don't think it would matter if Hank was the DC.

Come on Jimmy, you cannot seriously be saying it is just the players. Collins has had issues with gameplanning for four years now. You simply cannot continue to struggle like we have on defense thus far and not make some coaching changes if it does not get better.

Not only that, but if we don't have the players on defense it only makes Collins more to blame. He doesn't recruit. Seriously, what good is he?

New coaches and experience are both required.

I don't think there will be any coaching changes this year. Maybe Hawkins changes the defensive staff some next year. I think Bohn's giving him his 5.
