How much damage has been done?

Before this season I think there were basically 3 schools of thought among Buff fans in regards to Coach Hawkins. The fans that loved him and had no doubts about him being successful, the fans that love the Buffs and love the coach by extension, and fans who were starting to have concerns about Hawkins coaching ability. I would say that 85% of the fans fell into the first two groups.

Now with the shockingly poor start to the season for the Buffs the fan sentiment has probably had one of the all-time biggest shifts. I would say that now 70% of the fans fall in the last group and only a handful are in the first group.

Even if by some miracle Hawkins can win 6 games this season there is not likely to be a massive shift back. Hawkins has lost a lot of credibility with the fans and it is not going to be restored easily.

Furthermore, the press has now turned on him. They find him to be dismissive of them and they don't like that. The old "you not a coach so you don't understand" act does not play well with either fans or the press.

So I believe the coach will remain embattled for the near future which results in damage to recruiting and also to fund raising and ticket sales.

Even if Hawkins is not replaced, the CU FB program could be starting a downward spiral. Hawkins is going to have to work some big time Zen Magic to fix this one.

No Zen Magic needed at all. ****ing win more games than you lose and lots of things are forgiven.

For me, I was willing to go along with the program, despite the stupid sound bites, despite the inexplicable game day decisions, despite the QB situation, despite the penchant for playing the "Rudys" all because Juicebox had success in Boise. He must know what he's doing right?

I don't think so anymore. Back in '07 we heard the "we're so close" rant. So close to what? The team has been on a downward trend since year number two under Juicebox. Reading about B. Schaub today in the DP and how GB instilled toughness which is inspiring Schaub in his MMA pursuits really stood out. I think Juicebox is soccer-momming these guys. I see no fire or intensity. They get their heads kicked in by CSU and Toledo and it is hard to see any emotion about that from the team, certainly not from Juicebox.

As GB's recruits trickle out, I believe the competitive fire is trickling out too. GB had a hard time recruiting at the end and the results showed from the ridiculous restrictions. GB was a lame duck at the end for a lot of reasons, some of his own making, some not.

It's pretty sad to see some quality players that Juicebox has brought in seem comfortable with losing. I don't think you have to go Woody Hayes on your team, but there certainly are times when you challenge them and see who your fighters are.

Bottom line is CU has gotten less competitive as the time under Juicebox has gone by, and it is hard to watch.

CSU and Toledo have me on the edge. I've pretty much always supported him up to that point beforehand. Now I'm conflicted. I want him to do well as I think he seems like a good person, and I want CU to get on track ASAP, which a coaching change would delay. On the other hand, I do feel like the ship is sinking and it's probably more wise to cut bait now and get re-started this offseason.

In the end, I think that's where I side, because I too believe a lot of damage is being done and if he is around next season (assuming this year is a 4-5 win stinker) then CU football will need another 8 years to get it back.

I think it is beyond fixing. I supported Coach Dan through 2007. Last season was a cause for concern because of the nonsense Helfrich was running on offense and Collins remained a liability on defense. There were excuses after excuses.

The 2009 season was full of promise with a couple of coaching changes and a more reasonable tune regarding what the offense was going to do. There was open competition for the quarterback position. The Buffs were going to run the ball. Then we find out the competition for the quarterback position was eliminated 3 weeks before the first game. We found out Darrell Scott was healthy after Hawkins said he was "dinged up." We continue to see the player groupings on offense that don't do anything other than tip off the defense and confuse our own offense. Guess who is coaching the receivers. I'll bet it is the same guy pushing the player groupings.

We hear a smart *** reply to Joel Klatt who gave a correct analysis to a running game in trouble. We now hear nothing more than babbling. The start of the 2009 season isn't any better than the 2006 season. It is getting worse. The flat affect on the sidelines. Eliminating the competition for your son's position sends a bad message to everyone. Competition is how you get better at anything you do in life. It appears to me that he has lost a lot of the players. He has probably lost a lot of the former players.... ask Joel Klatt. He has lost considerable numbers of supporters. Coach Mac gave his support. I suspect Coach Mac was being the gentleman that he is with his response.

A win Saturday will not stem the tide. I think it's over.
The parachute has no ripcord.

No program is hopeless and 8 years is hopeless.

Look at what top coaches do to programs. Fairchild, Meyer, Sarkisian, Carroll, Brown, Stoops, Saban, etc.

With the right person, doing the right things, programs can turn very quickly. Air Force, CSU, Utah, TCU, BYU, OSU, etc.

We have seen what he can do, the guy is done. He lost the team and we know what kind of coach he is. I was fully behind him up until sometime in the second quarter of the CSU game, and he totally lost me in the first quarter of the Toledo game. It wasn't even about the score. It could have been far worse, or even much better. He lost me because of how the team is prepared and motivated along with the adjustments that he made. Once you fail in the motivation department as bad as he has, that is it, it's over. He could finish the season 7-5 and I still want a new coach. Then at least I know that the new guy has something to work with.

The problem most people have who want to give him another chance is, each week they wipe the slate of chances clean. He has had his 3 strikes... Montana St, Washington St, 2-10, CSU, Toledo, regressing last year, not able to recruit a QB... It's time to move on.

what he is putting out there is ridiculous. i was thinking maybe some of the new guys on D would be way better than they are. his recruits haven't panned out. by the way, polk looks like a tailback playing defense, it goes on and on. we move a guy that started as a frosh to fullback? and now he's starting at ucla? and don't get me started on the receivers. our skill posit. athleticism is shockingly bad. but the icing on the cake for me is there's no fire, coach looks like he's in a daze. he aint cuttin it

The good thing is that with most QBs looking at a redshirt year, Cody will be a senior and then the field is wide open, so it should not be a Hinderance any longer.:smile2:

Awesome, so this year plus another year of downward spiral and things will be OK. The smoking hole in the ground is coming up pretty quickly... In fact, we may hit it this weekend.

So you are saying we have 10 games and a season to look forward to the perfection of the 5 yard curl route...exciting.

long term, every time the kool-aid for the program gets jacked up and we disappoint....current students, young people, and far-flung alums lose interest. hard to build the base like this. people put something into it, get burned.....and they don't come back.

edit: the other thing is while i'm cautiously optimistic the hoops team will be respectable (above .500 and 5-7 conference W's) it's kinda scary how perilously close both men's revenue sports are to really entering some dark, dark perennial doormat type status. if Hawk totally tanks and the next hire struggles...where are we in 5 years as a program? there's no safety net with either program right now, today.

Beyond repair IMO. The propaganda out of the AD these days is a pretty big slap in the face to the diehard fans.

This fool last me last year, and I all for firing the MOFO as soon as we ahve the money. Hopefully that will sooner than later.

I was extremely upset with Hawkins at the end of the first half of the CSU game. His time management issues haven't gotten any better. Still, I was willing to say "hey, maybe that was just a crazy aberration, and they'll come out and kick the dog out of Toledo".

We all know how that turned out. I'm done with Hawk. I'm convinced he's incompetent. I don't believe a word that he says anymore. If I don't believe it, why would the players?

The sad reality is that he'll have the opportunity to coach out the remainder of the season. As somebody above said, even 7-5 wouldn't get me back. He's toast as far as I'm concerned. The guy is out of his league. He just doesn't get it.

Good lord Buffwings...you letting your illegal immigrant gardner do your posting again?

Holy crap, what was that? Man, I was drinking earlier but I didnt think I was that bad? Man I need to quit the sauce for a little bit.

I'm on the edge with both toes hanging on. I just don't see anything that makes me believe that Hawkins can turn this thing around. I won't go over everything that is wrong but I really hate the lack of fire this team shows. I just haven't seen anything positive and and I'm tired of the "we're this close" line and we just need to "clean things up a bit", "it's the little things" when it is obvious to the most uneducated fan that this team and coaching staff have major problems going on and they aren't going to get resolved in one season. :sad1:

He's not turning crap around. He just needs to have his bags packed and car loaded with a "North California or Bust" on the back.

I'm looking forward to see who our next coach is going to be. We can only go up from here. Cant get any lower than losing to Montana ST, getting spanked by Mizzou, get beat by the lambs at home AND getthing schooled by To-fukin ledo on Natl Tv. This is rock bottom. I'd just wear powder blue the rest of the season at games if I was in CO to show we are deep in Fairbanks Era II.

I am not upset with Bohn's public stance so far. Obviously he has to back the coach and everything he does until the day he fires him. Until Bohn decides to make the change he must back him fully because you can't retract that type of thing.

I am sure Bohn is exploring the options and running the numbers. He may be waiting to see how the reaction is at this weekend's game and that may get things moving, perhaps prompt him to make a few informational phone calls about potential hires. Again though, as a good AD, he has to back the coach until he decides to can him.

The problem is that our AD doesn't have the money to do anything about it. Bohn is holding the party line because he doesn't have any options. Unless we find CU's version of T. Boone Pickens to pony up the money to buy him out, this is reality for a few more years.

don't worry about the money. Football is the flagship program of the university, and the money will come if it gets bad enough. It is already in bad enough territory, now people are just looking for confirmation.
