Impact players

I think most of us are in agreement that our impact players are underutilized. We can also probably agree that the players that we want to see out there most are as follows:

QB Tyler Hansen
HB Darrell Scott
WR Markques Simas
WR Andre Simmons
HB Rodney Stewart (a tip of the hat for the c-note he put up against wyo)

I'm sure we'd also like to see more of Will Jefferson and Brian Lockridge worked into the gameplan. Can we get a definitive ruling on why these guys (generally) are sitting in favor of immortal legends like Sumler, Espy, Ebner... etc? I'm perplexed. I've tried to look at this from any point of view that might justify starting Espy over Simmons for example. Is he that much better? What about the "injuries" that our fan favorites are constantly battling? This is division 1 football yes? Playing through pain is part of football on every level. I don't understand how Scott could have been so solid last week (he certainly wasn't overworked, he had 12 carries) but now he's so "injured" he doesn't play a snap. Same for Simas, I know he played a couple of snaps out there but after all the build up and all the hype how did they not try to get him the ball 8-9 times at least? On to Simmons... the guy was beastly on the JC level and was supposed to immediately upgrade our WR corps. He's got 1 catch in three games. What in the hell is going on here? Does anyone have any insider info on what the coaching staff sees in our army of walk-ons that they don't see in our talented players?
 
I think the Buffs have one big time offensive talent: Speedy..


Scott has talent but what I've seen so far I haven't seen an elite back. Plus he seems to be injured a lot..

Lockridge needs to be on the field more.. I need to see more before I can say that he's a legit talent.. I'd probably move him to WR if I was Hawk.


I think the other guys its debatable if they are real "talents". I think its more of we as a fanbase are hoping they have big time talent rather than actual reality.. Simmons doesn't jump out and impress me like a lot of people around here feel about him. He doesn't seem to go after the ball when its in the air from what I've seen. Looks unorthodox running routes out there also.


Sumler isn't awful. He gets a lot of bad rap around here. He's not a terrible player.

I understand what you're saying. Actually I think Sumler was a 4* recruit wasn't he? No he's not horrible but I'd rather use him as a blocking fullback and use Scott and Stewart as a 1-2 punch. Stewart could be the Maurice Jones-Drew to Scott's Fred Taylor. Back to the receivers, maybe none of them are world beaters but for god's sake how can the tiny Espinoza be a better receiver than a big guy like Simmons who has strength and speed? Cody is a terrible quarterback. Why sugar-coat it? Having bigger receivers out there should make it easier for him. He throws those soft as charmin floating wounded ducks like nobody else so maybe Simmons or Simas can go up and over a smaller DB and get it. I don't know... I suppose there must be a reason why hawk refuses to play the 'talented' guys.
 
You know, I'm not so sure that Espinoza isn't a better receiver than Simmons at this time. He looks a lot better running routes out there than Simmons.


I haven't been impressed by what I've seen from Simmons. Its early and I don't think Hackett really came into his own until his 2nd year here as a JC but I don't think its a FACT that Simmons is a whole lot better than Espinoza (who I agree is not a Big 12 starting caliber WR) right now. Just because he looks the part with his size and athletic ability (which is debatable in my mind) doesn't automatically mean he can play the part.

I'm just kind of worn out by everyone's talk that this guy is so talented and everyone's perception that this guy is the next Jerry Rice or something. I mean what the heck do you base that on? Its not like he's not out there, they play 3 WR, 4WR a lot and he's in the rotation. When they throw him the ball its not like he's wide open breaking away from the opposing defenders. Usually its been in traffic. He's drawn a few flags for pass interference and he's caught a few balls. So its not like he's never out there. And don't forget the guy is behind everyone else since he had about a week of practice in the fall. It takes time to develop chemistry in the passing game. Its not as simple as just throwing a guy out there and bingo, everything turns out swell. I mean the talk of this guy on this board is so over the top to a point that you would think this guy is comparable to the Charles Johnson's, Michael Westbrooks and Mike Pritchard's of the world. The guy isn't at the level of being a Top WR yet. When he is, Hawk will play him.



I commented in the gameday thread that I thought Little hawk's arm has gotten worse since his frosh year.. The wounded ducks he was throwing was really noticeable today. Not sure what to say about it. Its disappointing we don't have a better option at this time.


Sumler was a 3 star RB and I don't think he'd be a great fullback.
 
I still think that at least at the receiver position it comes down to who Cody is comfortable throwing to.

Many QB's have their favorite targets and I've certainly seen this to be the case with little Hawk. Coach has them in there because Cody likes them and is most comfortable when they are in the game. It gives him the best chance to play well and more than what is good for the team that is what this is about.

The win was nice but the next three games will tell the real story on what this team really is and what kind of coach Hawk is.
