THE OFFICAL BENCH ESPINOZA THREAD, please add comments.
Am I the only that thinks this would help Cody complete a few more passes?? I would rather see Clark Evans at QB at this point, since Tyler Hansen is no longer an option either. Cody cannot hit these timing routes to these small receivers that are only 1/2 a step open.

McKnight is OK, but starting 2 slow white boys is killing the offense.
The only time they should see the field together is in a 4 WR set.
Someone slap Hawkins and wake him up before we go to West Virginia and
watch our receivers "blanketed" with coverage. At least with Simmons size and speed you can run a quick slant for a 1st down, or throw it down the sideline and let him jump for it... I see better QB/WR combinations in the High School games on Friday night. Please fix it NOW.
:deadhorse:

Thoughts?

Myt only hope is that Hawkins is not playing Simmons and Simas so there is little to no tape on them for WVU to see. Give us an advantage.

But I think I am reaaaaaaaly clinging to straws with that hope.

Otherwise, why would Simas, who has practiced with Cody for three years, not play against Wyoming?

Reports of a lingering injury that limited Simas to a few snaps yesterday. Hope to see him plenty against WVU. Espinoza catches most of what's thrown his way when Cody isn't mistiming the throws but yards after catch are a pipe dream both when he lines up at receiver and fields punts. It's sad that Simmons is being used primarily as a decoy when he's in the game. When Cody fails to get enough arc on his throws and they land well ahead of the intended receiver's route, all I can think of is how a healthy Simas, Simmons or Anthony Wright should be fast enough to correct some of those mistakes. Throwing several yards ahead of Espy has proven to end in incompletion time after time, and that's the better result of what could happen in that scenario.

I have to admit I've seen at least a couple HS quarterbacks this year who have a WAY better deep game than Cody. We all know what his shortcomings are by now, so I'm not going to laundry-list. From what I've heard, Evans' armstrength is subpar. So, not sure he'd be the answer. I'd also like to see more Simmons/Jefferson/Wright.

Simmons, Jefferson, Wright,Simas all make Cody look bad because they easily outrun his arm. Espy, Ebner, et. al. do their work on slants, short crossing patterns, and other routes that don't require long throws into tight spaces.

If anything you would hope that having these guys on the field would open up the run just a little bit....since the safeties might have to respect the speed on the outside and the miracle chance that Cody can actually make the pass

11 days to get Simmons & Simas on the same page with Cody....i hope they're eating/sleeping/studying/hanging out together 24-7 so that by some miracle we can get the offense rolling on some sort of a cylander

All I know is that Espy wasn't able to gain separation from Wyoming DBs. These are the slowest, least talented corners we will face all year and he couldn't beat them. I'm fine with him being in the slot running underneath option routes against a safety or nickel corner, but having him split on the outside is a complete waste.

Espinoza did what was supposed to do, he caught every punt with several guys around him. The Wyo punter was hitting 4.4 hangtimes consistently, you can't expect to run those back.

Bench Espy? why? Because he's making fair catches?

Just speculation, but it seems to me that a lot of our patterns are based on timing routes, and Espinosa and McKnight are the only guys that have their timing in sync with Cody. On a lot of Cody's passes, the ball is in the air before the receiver even makes the cut. If the receiver doesn't have his timing down or isn't running the precise pattern, it looks like Cody is a mile off.

there was one pass in particular I remember, a comeback route where Espy popped out of the break but could only get one hand on the ball... these guys need to be bigger, they are such small targets that even when they do the right thing they have difficulty making the catch.

Espy isn't the root of problem here. Cody is. Fix the qb situation and we'll be able to take advantage of our bigger, faster, stronger receivers. Simple as that.

Also, if we're going to play a non-scholarship WR, why not Dustin Ebner? He's over 6 feet tall and had the fastest 40 time among the WRs in spring testing. Only time I've seen him on the field (Toledo), he made a catch. He may actually have a chance to be decent at this level.

I don't think his 40 matters. Or his height.

But he is a walk on though, so he is in like Flynn!!! Starting rotation, here he comes!!!!!

The WORST off-season move was hawk announcing himself as the wr coach. He thinks this is UC davis or idaho high school football. Mcknight, simas, simmons wright and jefferson should be our main 5 guys.

Hawk is a clueless idot if he thinks they are going to go into games vs WV,Texas,KU,MU,OSU and ****braska with espinosa and ebner playing over more talented, size and speed guys like the players mentioned above.

But, we will continue to be frustrated because each week, coach simple jack will continue to leave his size, talent and speed on the sidelines.

The worst part is how hawk raved about simmons and couldn't wait for him to get cleared and now the guy plays what,3-4 plays a game?

This thread indicts the coaching more than the player himself. Espy is who he is (damn, that's profound).

Excellent observation. We are running the west coast offense again, and the only HEALTHY receivers we have that have been in the program longer than two months are the ones on the field, for the most part.

I think its funny that when Will Jefferson was signed, a bunch of people on this board thought he was a wasted scholarship and that he couldn't play, mainly because they hadn't heard of him on Rivals, and now after he's been in the program for A MONTH they are demanding that he start over guys who know the playbook.

Cody is not tall enough to see where he is throwing the ball on half the plays. He is hoping that the WR is were the play said he would. Cody has almost no abilty to check to a secondary pass option.

Every play Cody looks for 1 player, and does not care what other opitons might have been available.

What bugs me is why, now that Simas is off suspension, that he did not get a ton of PT on Sat. I can understand why Simmons, who just joined the program a couple of weeks ago, may not get PT because of his limited familiarity with the system but Simas has been with the program two years and should know the playbook inside and out. All we've been hearing is how much the O has missed him and how great it will be to get this tall & talented WR out there. Why then did he only see the field for a handful of plays yet Espinoza is in on 80% of the snaps?!!!!! WTF!
This is the kind of sh!t that makes me question Hawk and his ability to coach, especially on game day.

I was just thinking about Simmons. He practiced for a 1 1/2 weeks before the CSU game. He'd been on campus about 2 1/2 weeks before that. It's like 1 1/2 months now that he's been on campus. I'm not buying it any more that he doesn't know enough of the offense to be featured in games.

From what I read in the paper today, Simas' knee had swollen up during those handful of plays and started causing him trouble. They had a quote from him that he was not able to move effectively on the plays. So if he can't be effective, better to not have him on the field and risk further injury. Hopefully this way he can take advantage of the bye week and be ready to go at WVU.

I didn't hear he was hurt. Well that makes more sense now...

By the time he got to practice, we were beginning to prepare for our first game. I just don't think he has had a chance to really learn the offense and/or get the timeing down with Cody. Hopefully the bye week will give him and Jefferson a big boost. Remember, even the incoming freshmen had most of the summer to work with the guys. Simmons and Jefferson had just a few weeks.

I would imagine by game 4 with a bye week added in, there should be no excuse for simmons ,simas, jefferson and wright to know the offense and be in there much more. Simas had his knee act up but the others should be fine by now.

But we know what's going to happen with the wr rotation so....

I could see it now...Simmons and Simas feeding each other chocolate covered strswberries, spooning in a dorm bunk, finishing each others sentences...AWWWWWWWW.

Can we add Sumler to the benched list? Nothing against him personally but he just doesn't get the job done, if we aren't going to have Scott in the game I would much rather see Lockridge get the ball, every time he gets the ball he makes something good happen, the kid can flat out run!

Speedy looked great Saturday too, making the first guy miss nearly everytime, which he relaly needs to do seeing how there is a defender in the backfield on nearly every play.

As far as the receivers go, I am ok with McKnight in the game but totally agree here with Espinoza, he bring nothing to the table. I can't fathom why Simmons, Jefferson or wright are never in the game. Everytime one of them gets in and gets a ball thrown their way they make a play, what are the coaches looking at in all seriousness? I still don't get it.

I am sad to see I was right about who would play WR last week. Hawk is splitting the 3rd WR spot between all the most talented guys (Simmons, Simas, Will Jeff, Wright) and playing Scotty and Espy almost every snap.

If the defense doesn't have to defend the entire field, you're in for a LOOOOOONG day against the better teams on the schedule.
