At the end of the first half, CU takes a knee and does nothing to try to get a score before halftime. I think that for a team that has struggled to score all year long in a game where they are only up by three scores, that they need to take every opportunity to put points on the board until the outcome is no longer in doubt. Wyoming was going to get the ball to start the third quarter. Four runs in a row and taking a knee really pissed me off. I thought that four runs in a row followed by inserting Simas & Simmons and running a play action would have been appropriate. It may not have worked, but it would at least send a message that they're always trying to score.

One of the fellows in my section argued that being up 17-0 with no injuries was good enough, and that we would have been risking injury or a turnover in that situation. He made the point that it's the primary goal of the offense to protect the ball. I said they could take three knees in a row and punt every time if that was truly their primary goal. I think he's an idot.

What say you?

i see both points but agree with your friend your up 17-0 and there an inept offense no need to risk anything

I think your an idiot... but I agree with you in this situation!

For a team that has struggled all year, be pleased as punch with the 17-0 lead... don't let them back in the game with 17-3, or 17-7.

I don't mind it.

I had no problem with the decision. The d was playing extremely well, I don't think Wyo had more than a few first downs the entire half. Why take the chance of a turnover and an easy score, or a hard hit to your qb who is playing with a concussion (especially given his backup is a true freshman walk-on).

If they were at the 30 then I would try to score more points. CU was backed up in their own end and a turnover or sack and fumble would have giving wyoming a chance at a td or points right before the half. As fragile as this team is, giving momentum right before the half to wyoming could have been a bad thing.

They played it safe, for a team that's 0-2 it was probably the right choice.

It can go either way. I wish they would have at least made a couple of attempts to move the ball into scoring position. If it didn't work out, then try to kill the clock. Oh well. If we're in a situation like that against pretty much any other team on our schedule I'd like to see them try to get another score, because I don't have that much confidence this year going into half time with a 17 point lead.

given the general ****tyness of our offense and the field position, I was pretty ok with the decision.... Even tho I hated it.

score every time you have the ball, period; no other way around it. the way we looked that last 2 weeks, we needed the confidence that we can score whenever we want. If that means beating up on a bad team, fine. Our Offense looked like ****, again (not quite as bad as the last 2 weeks, definitely and improvement...bad nontheless). We have been embarrassed, inept, and lacked confidence. I say run it up like anybody else would have. We should have won that game 45-6 (only because they should hae made 2 FGs).

Cody was missing deep throws all day long. Odds were that the ball would have gone back to WY with time to do something. I agree with burning the clock, but I have little confidence in Cody's arm.

I agree with the decision to avoid anything that might add to the chances of committing a turnover. Cody wasn't playing particularly well and an interception could have killed the momentum that we had going into the half. Add that to the fact that WYO was getting the ball first in the 2nd half and that's just a risk you real don't want to take, imo.

I thought talkins said that they would never take a knee and let up.

Throwing deep with 10 seconds left isn't taking a risk, IMO. The worst that can happen is an injury, and you take that chance on every play. I suppose a big hit on Cody going back to pass that could maybe force a fumble is a remote possibility, but holy chit, if we're really that worried about it, why play the game at all?

I have it from a good source that the issue was that Talkins was running short on gold stars for the first half to be handed out with the juice and crackers at halftime, so he did not want to take a chance of a big play and disapointing someone in the locker room at halftime. A flunky ran out to stock up during halftime at Office Depot, so he was set for the end of the game.

That was premium info, so don't spread it around.:smile2:

Being up 17-0 I would agree with you. You should not leave a opportunity on the field. Injury? A few years ago while watching Tennesee Vs Bama, The Vol's chose to take a knee at half leading Bama by 24. The center steps on the QB's foot. Injuries can happen on any down. Another argument to not leave points on the field might be for a team to improve it's BCS position at the end of the season.

I was upset too. The O should have put many more points on the board in the first half and Hawk bitched about that exact thing before heading into the locker room. If that was the case, why did he send them the message to back off with the plays we ran in that last series? Hawk seems pschitso sometimes...

You can't have it both ways. You can't bitch about how terrible our offense is and then bitch that the coaches didn't decide to try and go 90 yards in a minute at the end of the half.

Folks gonna bitch. Until CU is 3-0 at this point in the season, like they should be.

FWI: thanks for the birthday greetins'.

There's a time to go for it, and a time to rein it in. With an 0-2 team, with a three-score lead over an opponent with a bad offense, I think "rein" gets the nod.

If your offense is terrible (which ours is), then you take every opportunity to score. You do everything you possibly can to put points on the board. To do otherwise is counterproductive.

Taking over at the seven yard line with 2:22 left in the half, it was certainly a good call to run out the clock. Our two minute drill only works late in the second half ...

Still, I agree that after the first down was made at the 19, it was worth trying to air it out - especially with a play action. A "fake" kneel down would have also been a good idea, though it didn't work for Texas Tech (don't know if you saw the Texas/Texas Tech game, but with one second left in the half, the Tech qb faked a kneel down, but the referee blew the play dead anyway. No play).
