What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and system?

I am curious as to what reasons the few Hawkins supporters on this board have for thinking that this team is going to be dramatically better next year, or ever.

Going into last year, it was supposed to be "the year". This year was supposed to be "the year". Now, next year is going to be "the year". Only for sure, this time. Why?

What are the strengths of this coaching staff? Recruiting is getting worse every year. The offense is one of the worst I have ever seen at any level of football. The defense this year is as bad as I have seen in the past 6 years; even in the lean years, I always felt our defense was respectable and more often than not sold out by the offense's ineptitude. Not sure if that is the case this year. The personnel selections are still head-scratchers. The play-calling on both sides of the ball still leaves quite a bit to be desired.

We do not appear to have a legitimate D1 (not big12, D1) quarterback on the roster. I can not say with any sincerity that I recall this team having a clearly better QB than any team we have played in the past two years. The only time it has even been debatable is against the Wyoming's and CSU's of the world. Against Big 12 teams - even KSU and ISU - we have been at a clear disadvantage.

My biggest concern is no longer the quality of the team - clearly, they simply are underwhelming in that department - but the lack of any kind of visible progress or improvement. The OL doesn't really look better than it did last year; quite a contrast to expectations, considering that even sportswriters who rarely have a reason to notice CU were predicting them to be very good this year. The QB play, bottom line, has probably gotten worse. The WRs are still the least athletic, least threatening group of skill position players in the conference.

Where is the progress? Where is the improvement? Why is this team magically going to get better next year?

This is not a post to flame or to bash Hawkins. I am sincerely asking what are the reasons for expecting improvement next year? I don't see them. The running game? The coaches have made it clear that they are not going to hang their hat on the running game.

crickets.....

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

I simply want to believe.

This year won't end as badly as it started.

Next year we have some fine talent taking the field.

I have nothing to go on except my gut feeling and some koolaid.

10 shots of tequila and a case of ESB redhook might do it.

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

I pretty much am with AJ on this. Plus, there's the fact that we both covered and shut our opponent in our last game. Going through another coaching change isn't what this program needs right now, so I'm hoping the team puts it together.

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

Do a search for Chilly and you will find where I have addressed this more than once. I don't see where repeating again in new thread will change the outcome of any of the other threads.

As one poster pointed out. Doing the same thing over and over with out a different outcome is the definition of insanity. Or something like that.

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

I don't know how to respond. Maybe you should go just shoot yourself and put yourself out of your misery.

This team is not devoid of talent, as you suggest. The talent level has improved. Believe it or not, this team is, I would bet, the youngest in the Big XII, or damned close to it. Our O and D lines are almost excluseively freshmen and sophomores. As for receivers: yeah, this group will be dramatically better next year, if not during this year. I mean, WAY better. Maybe RSing Hansen was not a good idea, I'm not sure, but I think it will lead to much better QBing next year as well. Hansen was close to being, if not already, the best QB in the program.

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

I've shared this theory before, but I think it's appropriate here:

When Juicebox was hired, the University's top priority was to clean up the program. They were less concerned with wins and losses and more so with re-establishing the integrity of the program. Hawkins was hired not because he's a great (or even good) head coach in terms of game planning, play calling, player motivation, clock management, etc...it was because he was a wholesome guy from an up-and-coming team...perfect to bring a new face to our program.
Plus, most reputible coaches on the market at the time were either out of our price range OR wouldn't touch the program with a 10ft pole due to the lingering effects of the scandal and recruiting limitations (or both haha)

Today, almost 3 and a half years later, the program has been rebuilt. Reputation is intact and no recruiting limitations remain.

Now that we've fixed the foundation of the program, it's time to bring in a coach who can win some games!

No disrespect to Hawkins, I am very appreciative for all he's done for the university, however, the time has come for us to move on - the expectations for this large, BCS school have exceeded what he is capable of delivering.

Realistically, since we won the Wyoming game, he will be around AT least until the end of the year, possibly until even after next season depending on how the rest of the season & recruiting go this year. The only way I see him going any earlier is with a meltdown beyond even Barnett's last season...and considering that we've already lost ugly to CSU and Toledo and Texas looks as good this year as they did when they beat us 70-3, we may not only win 1 or 2 games all year, but we could be embarassed by Texas even worse than that Big XII championship game.

I'm not saying that to be negative, but realistically, this is the worst coached and motivated CU team I have ever seen (bear in mind, I wasn't around for the Chuck days, but I imagine they couldn't have been much more pathetic than this)

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

I'm not a Juicebox fanboy, but even I think they'll get better as most of the starters become 5th year seniors, 4th year junior and super-talented underclassmen that can crack the depth chart.

That assumes, however, that recruiting gets better. Other than the 2007 class, we've barely been among the top half of D-1 program rankings (non-BCS included).

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

Pretty much, when I see a post begin "When Juicebox was hired....", I don't read it. Sorry, I cannot come up with a clean adjective here, so I'll just shut up. I pretty much am imagining 16 or 17 year old idots here, however.

"America will always do the right thing, but only after exhausting all other options."
- Winston Churchill

My optimism for the Buffs lead by Hawkins is fueled by the same principle.

Did Churchill really say that?

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

I think it means we're being immature and we lose credibility when we refer to Hawkins as "Juicebox". And that it pisses him off when he sees it.

btw, I use "Juicebox" in an effort to keep things light. I was in a rage until I was able to see the humor in Hawkins' performance.

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

This team does have talent. The defense can be solid, if unspectacular. The offense is really a solid o-line and a QB away from improving. I think we have the o-line talent, but they need seasoning, and they need time playing together as a unit. Unfortunately, there is no QB savior on the horizon unless someone steps up during spring practice.

My main problem with Juicebox, is that this team has the same problems this year, that we had last year, and we had two years ago and is only marginally better than than the team we had three years ago.

I don't think the recruiting is THAT bad. This has been a "yougn team" now for four years and the coaches aren't showing the ability to "coach up" players.

I don't give a **** who coaches this team, if Juicebox can flip the switch and turn things around this season, great! If he can't, he needs to go. I haven't seen anything in the past that makes me think he'll just "get it", but ya never know!

Hmm. Lets see. It means that I'm getting sick and ****ing tired of you idots running Hawkins and the program into the ground. It also means that I think that you guys posting all this **** are a bunch of little bitchy kids. If not, you sure come across that way.

Get it?

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

This team does have talent.

Speed kills, we appear to be immortal this year. Yeah we have some size but no speed and until the Wyoming game it appeared no heart. Lets see if the heart beats when we get into the meat of the schedule.

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

subpar assistant coaches out -> new good experienced assistants in
young team -> year older hopefully bigger stronger faster
Cody out at QB -> Hansen in, even if he doesn't know the offense as well he brings a lot more to the table
WRs and OL -> know the playbook and have some playing time together

I think all of those happening and we could be what I thought we would be this season. I'd also like to see Hawk be as intense as he was vs Wyoming.

How the hell did he get that "Juicebox" nickname anyway?

This seems like a fair assessment of where the Buffs are these days. From what we've seen Hawkins isn't a great game day coach but he's brought in some kids that represent the CU community well. We had a negative reputation and I think that has, for the most part, been fixed. But, it's time to show progress in what is being put on the field.

I don't know who coined it, but I believe it is a youth soccer reference, juiceboxes and orange slices after every game...

Re: What makes you think this team will ever improve under the current regime and sys

Hawk is a system guy. Anywhere he goes it will take 5-7 years before you see anything that looks competitive. Until he has an entire roster, where every guy is a 4 or 5 year player in his system, at every position, he's not going to get it done. So do you give him another 1-3 years? IMO, given the fact he's batting about .333 in W-L column, he won't survive on the recruiting trail. He has run his course IMO, unless he can some how take 6 out of the next nine. Players will come to a new regime, but only if it looks like it is going somewhere. CU no longer has that look after getting run by two mid-majors on national TV to start year four under Hawk. Kids now would be expecting to come to CU to make a run and CU only looks like they are running for cover. JMO.

Calling him coach is an insult to coaches worldwide.

Doing the same thing over and over with out a different outcome is the definition of insanity. Or something like that.

I suppose I always try to remain keenly aware of this program's history and similar situations to where we are today.

Coach Mac easily could have been fired after 1984, or even 1985, and he had very few supporters. Sticking with him could have been deemed "insane" at the time, but if we hadn't we would not have our NC or all of the glory from 1986-1996.

The program looked to be in bad shape after 2000, and essentially the same team who was 3-8 that season turned it around and nearly competed for the NC the very next year.

Football is all fundamentals and desire. Block, tackle, and want it more than the other guy. I believe that we have enough talent right now to be successful and compete for trophies. We just need to turn the corner mentally, and I still think the team has the ability to do that under Hawk.
