For anyone who was pissed we hired Hawk... Who else was there?

Here is a link of Coaching Changes of that year. Not a real spectacular list, except for maybe Chris Peterson.

Really a sad list looking at it again... Todd Graham may have been an OK hire, but looking back he was in the same boat (small school) as Hawk with less success.

Hell at least we didn't hire Ron Prince.

Art Briles was still at UH, and he was a name I suggested. But I also thought DH was the other of the two guys I really wanted at that time.

We had to do a LOT of work to rebuild the reputation of the University. We had a winning coach from Boise State with a clean slate and no garbage trailing behind him. That the program has become respectable again is a huge win.
The team will come. We are fans and we are impatient, but when football is winning again - without the taint of before - it will be sweeet. I'm not changing my allegiances, so I have to wait.

and I don't see who else there was, either, and I don't know who else could have done what Hawkins did to change the perception of the school. We looked pretty dirty for a time there, thank heavens that has changed.

I doubt there were very many pissed at the time of the hire.

And where is he coaching now? What is the fascination with Embree?

I made my post a little bit tongue in cheek. There are certain people, who own their own "scoop" website, who are absolutely positive that going Jon Embree will return the Buffs to their 1990 glory days. They think that Embree will be head coach, Eric Bienemy will be offensive coordinator, Kanavis McGee will be the defensive line coach, and CU will be an immediate recruiting juggernaut who runs for 350 yards every game.

I have no idea what the answer is at CU for the football programs woes. I am not opposed to Embree. I am not opposed to Logan. CU is in dire dire dire dire need of support, both publicly and financially. If hiring Embree or Logan brings in fan support and money - then I am all for it.

You know what else we're in dire dire need of? Not losing our coordinators every year to other schools that can offer long term contracts. Since that's a state issue (Tabor, I think?), there's no way that problem gets solved anytime soon - therefore, we need to get coaches & coordinators who are loyal to the school and team and will stick around to bring the program back

I admit I loved the hire. And I still like Hawk the person. I'm just not all that fond of Hawk the coach at present. If he starts winning consistently, all will be forgiven on that front.

I loved the hire. and I generally welcome any hire and will give anybody a chance. It seemed like a good one at the time. Hawk was doing somethign special at Boise.

But will he be so easy to forgive and forget?

You know what else we're in dire dire dire dire need of?? Coordinators that we'd actually be sorry to lose to other schools that can offer long-term contracts.

(OK, Kiesau may turn out to be one of those guys given the right leadership and talent to work with...fingers crossed)

He has done his job. The program is clean and fixed. Now it is time to bring in a coach who wins games. This is much easier than we're making it...

i think there's a good point here when considering Hawk's tenure, but i don't agree that his mandate as coach was without expectations of winning football and at least contending for the North division in the time frame he's so far been given.

But will he be so easy to forgive and forget?

That's his baggage, not mine. When you are being paid $1 million a year to perform a job, you should expect some heat if you do not perform it well.

If he doesn't like that, he can move on to a less lucrative profession that has less stress and pressure to perform.

The fact that neither Embree nor Bienemy (nor Cabral for that matter) have ever been a coordinator is a serious concern for me.

Certainly there are coaches out there who were never coordinators before they became head coaches. But it is not necessarily a path I want CU to folow.

i'm against any of the "parochial" local hires or "back to the past". if EB proves himself as a coordinator somewhere, i'd love to have him back....but, he's not qualified to be HC. he's another John Blake or Mike Shula waiting to happen IMO.

no more learning on the job hires.

right now, i think we need someone who's done it before who will hire an experienced staff more than we need the young guy who looks like the smartest guy in the film room.

and for gawd's sake, let's start with D. Strong, Patterson come to mind.

Coordinators are popular whipping boys at CU especially the offensive coordinators. I always believe that it falls on the head guy - people act like the coordinators have some sort of total control that the Head Coach is powerless to stop.

Trying to get you to chuckle sometimes is like getting a brick wall to run the 40 in under 5 seconds.

After being assaulted as a 'Hawkins hater' for the past week or so, I'll admit I'm a bit touchy on the subject.

Hawkins sure seemed like a good hire - who knew? But after both his and Koetter's failures, I'm guessing no one will be breaking down the door for the next BS hire (pun intended).

I don't see BSU's coach going anywhere due to Hawk and Koetter's failures. Houston Nutt only stayed at BSU one year and has been successful in the SEC. I'm sure BSU fans are both saddened at Hawk's failings and thrilled with that because it's less likely people will try to hire Petersen away.

At the time it certainly seemed like a fantastic hire.

at the time, we were the premier BCS job open (based on history, not scandal and bad PR--along with Ward C.--on the national scene).

Hawk was going to get a bigtime job. turns out we were the one.

at the time, the only other name i found compelling was Butch Davis....but a somewhat mercenary (and Miami rep, even though he made a rebuild there that wasn't Jimmy Johnson/Erickson cheater).....i think Hawk was the right hire all things being equal.

what we didn't know, was that he's got no clue. 4 years is enough time for a rebuild....proven by other coaches and schools.

if we win 7 games this year, i'll retract that statement.

I recall thinking that I would have preferred Butch Davis. My understanding is that it wasn't feasible, for whatever reason, for him to come here.

I've changed my tune as well. I'd much rather Hawk be successful than having to start over with another coaching staff. Players like him, the administration seems to like him. Us fans are removed by several degrees as to what is really going on inside the program. And I think it is better to build the program on as strong a foundation as possible and not be too impatient for results. I live here in Los Angeles and SC was down for 20 years before they started winning like they are now. Not saying we should wait that long, but just can't take shortcuts to excellence and that is what we all want, right?

Southern Cal has had two losing seasons in the last 30 years and they fired the coach the last time it happened. I guess it depends on how you define being down but I don't think that Southern Cal has been down for 20 years before Pete Carroll showed up, in fact they won the Pac 10 6 times in the 20 years before Pete Carroll. And USC got to winning like they are now by changing coaches.
