**THIS IS NOT A RUMOR, TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS WITHOUT READING IN TO IT!**

I have it from an extremely reliable source (ie close family friend of the Shanahan family) that Mike Shanahan has been approached by Alumni and the CU AD on whether he would entertain and offer to coach at CU. He expressed interest and said that he would entertain the idea of a 2-year offer, but is on the fence if he wants to coach college at this point.

To me this tells me two positive things:

1.) The AD is exploring options.
2.) There is now a 5% chance that we can land Shanny rather than a 0% chance.

Again, he only stated the he would entertain a two year offer and that it would be a consideration. Take it for what it is worth and don't get too excited about it, but my source is as reliable as they come in this instance.

I think we'll need a heap of fertilizer for this seed to take root. I would be thrilled to see Shannyin CU gear, but what good would two years do?

I'm all for it IF Shanny would agree to a two year minimum stay. During those two years they can have an assistant working under him that has already been named the next HC.

oh well, at least Bohn is working on options. Yet another that is in accordance with all the other rumors.

Could be thinking of a FSU senerio where you anme the coach and name his replacement at the same time or shortly after. Only thing I could come up with, since even if he came here I don't think he would extend past the 2 years. Then again what the hell do I know?

So, my memory is fuzzy, but does Shannahan get his bronco money as long as he does not take another NFL gig or another coaching gig period?

Not giving any real thought to him being CU's coach, but wondering if he can coach a college team and still collect from Bowlen.

The idea is 2 years at something like $500k and then an extension with a considerable raise to a more long term deal (assuming CU can make an attractive offer) No hard numbers discussed at all, just talk at this point. The more important emphasis I was making here is that there is an open look at options.

that would drive bowlen nuts...

He collects from Bowlen until the contract expires, as long as he does not coach in the NFL prior to that. They you get into pro-rated $ etc.

He can coach in college and still collect the fat $ from his NFL days.

I want Shanny, but I want him to be committed to staying with the Buffs long-term. 2-years isn't my thing.

What I am being told is he gets $6.5M from the Broncos which would be offset by whatever he would get from CU (which is why the $500K would be resonable and why it would be only 2 years). After the 2 years was up, CU would have to pony up quite a bit IMO to keep him around.

This is excellent news. Not that I think it's 100% in the bag, but the idea that he's at least willing to entertain the idea is very encouraging. Lots of folks around here were saying that he'd never do it in a million years, ignoring the fact that there would be some compelling reasons for him to consider it.

Plus, this should light a fire under Hawks ass. I think the guy has lost the competitive edge, personally.

That is the one glimmer of hope in this thread. IMO, Hawk, while a nice guy, has run his course here.

I wouldn't get the hopes up too much on him coaching here, but if he did and was successful in those 2 years, I could see CU coming up with the money he is looking for to extend the contract.

Also, FWIW, the same guy also told me that he is not real excited about recruiting and doesn't care for it very much. On the plus side, name alone will help alot with recruiting.

ya... no way we can do it. We paid Barney, what, 2 mil/year? I could see us reachign 3 mill with a real BA coach, but no way we can match Sabans contract etc...

Which is the big worry right? I mean, tough to sell recruits if they think your coach is just going to jump ship in two years to go back to the NFL.

The interesting aspect of this is that if the Buffs paid Shanny a mere $500k, then they could actually afford to pay the Hawkins buyout. When the 2 years was up, they would be 'free and clear' to pay Shanny (or at least close to it)

IF you could get Shanny, and there are definite pluses to the college gig, shorter season, shorter practice restrictions etc., you could load up with good AC's to do the recruiting. Shanny could just be the closer on the name kids. It could work.

You have Shanny running the offense and being the "closer" on recruiting. You allow the assistants to do the legwork. You also have Shanny as the lead in-state recruiter.

The only major thing about Shanny that would be a concern is whether he can simplify his offense enough for college players.

Definately a pipe dream, but if we can get Pete Caroll like results out of Shanny, thats a lot of extra money for the AD.

The two-year thing makes sense. As that's when his payout from the Broncos expires. After that, I think he'd be hard pressed to find any deal, NFL or college, that would pay him $7MM/Yr.

If he comes in here and does well, there will be plenty of $$ flowing into the athletic department. Nike would probably kick in an extra $1MM/yr on name recognition alone. (I have no idea whether Nike would actually do that, but it seems reasonable, given what they pay out for endorsement money these days).

What would it take to keep him after the initial two years? No idea. Certainly a lot more than the $1MM/Yr we're paying Hawk. But if revenues jump because of the hire, then it'll be worth it.

Bring in Jeremy bates from USC to start... wouldn't hurt. Otherwise, I really do worry about the offense. I read a breakdown on his offense last year, and it was impressive. He literally changes his offense and formations by a huge amount every single game depending on the matchups. That sort of thing doesn't work to well in College when you have limited hours...

And the Buffs would certainly get attention from old Donkey fans in the area. The key would be capitalizing on that attention with some W's

I would guess $4M minimum, but that would also include a lot of incentives and Bronco like leeway.

I love the idea of Shanny coming to Boulder. I don't see it happening, but love the idea. I do like that we are obviously looking at coaching possibilities. I also like the idea of Shanny for two years with a coach in waiting if there were no possibility of keeping him longer than that.

I'd be thrilled with the hire personally, even if only for 2 years, assuming the replacement is named FAR in advance.

Just for conversation sake, who would he bring in for assistants?

There's that and the fact his offense is very complex for QBs. You only have a starting QB for 2-3 years, so the offense needs to be simplified for him to learn quickly.
