Q&A with Dan Hawkins

He did say 10 wins no excuses, but like he said he didn't promise 10 wins. He simply made that his expectations for the season. Just like he said in his answer to the question.

I'll buy that he never promised anything and technically can still reach the 10 win expectation but it is sad that he screwed up the "no excuses" expectation so fast after the first game.

 very troo. He's full of them.

he's brought it on himself with all the larger than life talk about himself and all the psychology articles he reads on motivation...

i want him to save this sinking turd, but he's just talking at this point to me. the old sound and fury signifying nothing thing.

Because he's your son, do you think you stay with him too long when he's struggling?

"I don't look at it like that. I always talk about handling the quarterbacks - it doesn't matter who the guy is, in the NFL or Pop Warner - that's a unique position. And I think the last thing any quarterback needs is somebody who isn't supportive. He needs someone who will be supportive. I was the same way with Bernard [Jackson] in '06. That doesn't mean you sit down with guys and talk about throws and reads and plays. But that guy better be your guy until he is not your guy and you go with somebody else. Look at in the NFL, when they just even talk about bringing someone else in, what it does to a quarterback's confidence. All of a sudden, he goes, 'Holy smokes.' "

This is where I have to really wonder. He did not stick by James Cox. Tyler Hanson was quickly benched. Seems like a double standard. I remember that in his first year that Hawkins commented that the other QBs were not ready because Joel Klatt had taken 85% of the snaps for the previous 3 years. Now what are they doing to get another QB ready.

Sorry, I am just down on Coach Hawkins.

True Dat... and standing by BJax is a bad example since BJax was effectively the only QB left on that roster after the first 3 weeks.

I'm with you 100% on that. He has not been at all consistent with his treatment of QBs.

How about this gem?

You know that stuff goes on out there. I don't read the paper, I don't get on the Internet and I don't really have an email address.

How do you twitter and blog without getting on the internet? More lies from Hawk.

His Twitter and E-mail account are run by the PR department. I wouldn't be surprised if Hawk never has any legitimate input to either of those other than answering a passing question from a staffer.

This guy is unbelievable. He has to go. On to the next regime, whoever that is, should be an improvement from Dan the snake oil man.

Or it creates competition which uhm 99% of coaches love. Babying your QB is never good imo, especially when it's your son.

Im ready for a change, too, but, what did he possibly say here that is unbelievable? Think being ready for a change and just tirelessly searching for reasons to be pissed off at the guy are two different things. Good lord.

Do we have the entire transcript? It would be interesting to see how many times he said "We'll see".

Or maybe somebody has told him to come up with a new catch phrase.

100% correct. Let's be honest too, he only stuck by Jackson because he had already tossed aside Cox and he did not want to burn Cody's redshirt. He "stuck by" Jackson because he had no other options.

Que the slap in the face to Mark Helfrich...
3...2...1....

Has the offense been impacted by the loss of coordinator Mark Helfrich to Oregon?

"Not at all. Mark is a good coach and a smart guy and all that. But the way we game plan and do things is more of a shared deal than one guy necessarily. It's the same terminology, same formations, all that stuff. It's not really a big change there."

Then again, this one is true...

People need to get off the Cody struggling bandwagon. The problem is Papa Hawk has not been able to recruit, nor was there anybody better to beat Cody out.

James Cox - I will refrain from any personal attacks but the kid had no business on a college football field.
Nick Nelson - Spring games and scrimages never showed anything.
Brian White - Never cared and didn't get along with either coaching staff
Matt Ballinger - Good kid, never impressed in spring or scrimmages. Looked very bad in live action (KU last year)
Tyler Hansen - Provided a nice, albeit brief, spark last year. His numbers were not that good and he was awful against ISU.

So we are left with Cody. Cody needs a running game and an offensive live to be productive/effective. We have other bigger issues.

It is not a band wagon but to pick up on your theme - Cody Hawkins has no business being a Big 12 starting QB. He is last in efficiency rating already in the conference and we have played weak teams. He is a 3rd year starter who still struggles.

Hansen comes in as a true freshman and hardly knows the playbook and is thrown into a starting role- he struggles for a half and is benched. Does CU win the Kansas State game last year without Hansen coming off the bench for a few series to spark the team. Cody struggles all the time and is never benched.

It is great to use the KU against Ballenger but you neglect to mention how bad Cody was in that game - 8 out 22 for 90 yards 2 INTs and 1 TD compared to Ballenger's 5 out of 8 for 57 yards 0 INTs and 0 TDs.

I am not defending Cody. I am simply saying that unfortunately and to the team's detriment, he has been our best option for 3 years.

Not defending Cody in the KU game, just MB looked worse. 5 for 8 does not account for 2 sacks taken and a fumble and the drives netting no yards.

That led to Hansen in the next game. Do we win the game w/o him, I am not sure. We won 14-13 and both scores were in the first half.

He was the man or saw significant time at Missouri and A&M and was pulled after a very poor half against ISU. Do we win the ISU game w/o Cody?

Does Cody belong in the Big XII, don't know, but it certainly doesn't appear that way, but neither does any other of our QBs. My whole point is that we have not had anybody or have not produced a better option.
