What do you think Coach Danny is Doing Today?

With no game today, what do you think he is doing? My guess is that he is in Chautauqua Park, dreaming of the days when he was with a winning program. Or, perhaps he is deciding how he is going to spend the $3.5M that is about to come his way.

I think he is watching Wonder Pets with Cody, drinking a juice box with some apples and peanut butter and coloring in his snoopy coloring book

Talking to Remax, Mayflower movers, and calling principals in High schools around the west coast.

I would hope he and his staff are out recruiting more speed but that might be hoping for too much.

He's not a slacker. He may not know how to change course, but the following is more in line with what is happening today, although I suspect he's at Dal Ward with the other coaches, reviewing tapes, going over the roster and evaluating performances, trying to "get this thing fixed":

At the midpoint of his first season at CU, the Buffs, who had lost five straight games, hosted the Baylor Bears, who also held a losing record. Several members of Hawkins' extended family traveled to Boulder to attend the game, and to stay at the Hawkins' house in Lafayette. Colorado lost to Baylor by one field goal, in triple overtime. By midnight Hawkins still hadn't come home. Misti recalled their text message exchange:

"Where are you?" she wrote.
"At the office."
"What are you doing?"
"I'm trying to get this thing fixed."

When Misti woke up the next morning, Hawkins still wasn't home. It was the first night he'd spent at the office since they were married.

"Where are you?" she texted, again.
"At the office."
"OK. I'm on my way."
"Oh no, don't come down here."

Misti didn't text him back. Fifteen minutes later, outside the Dal Ward Center, she pounded on the locked front door. Another text:

"Come open the door for me."

What Misti said to him when he opened the door was not said in anger, she recalls. Soon after that morning, she remodeled their basement, hanging football memorabilia on the walls, installing a flat-screen TV, and asking the tech guys from CU to wire the video system Hawkins uses on campus so he could study game film at home. She wants him to be able to do his work. But she insists he do it at their house.

"Don't ever, ever do that again," she said when he unlocked the Dal Ward front door. "I understand that you feel bad, but don't ever not come home."

That was back when Hawkins believed he had major problems to fix. I'm not so sure he hasn't bought into his own rhetoric and believes they're just a play away from being BCS champions.

I'm as pissed and disenchanted with this staff as most of you, but I don't question Hawks work ethic for a second. Sometimes effort just doesn't translate to success. Like players, like coach...

:yeahthat:

I'm sure Hawk is at work today. I just wish I had any faith it would help...

:stupid:

its not work ethic. to me it seems to be more of a judgement/execution issue rather than an effort issue.

ok, i suppose that im as guilty as anyone in making some things personal with regards to hawkins but, i really dont want to make it personal with him. when i sit back and look at it without emotion, there is no way he is not trying his best and does not want the best for CU. no way. he was hired for a reason and im sure he took the job for a reason. and yes, im sure the paycheck played a part but so did the oppertunity.

i dont doubt that he had dreams of having Bill Mac like success with hopes to even surpass his accomplishments. i dont doubt his drive nor his desire.

i just doubt his judgement, ability and execution in his responsibilities as head coach of the U of Colorado. there is no need to make that personal, i guess.

its easy to vent ones frustration towards him in any number of ways when the Buffs lose. he is the best target and he is not a kid. he is being paid millions for results that are far from being realized.

does not mean he is a bad person. does not mean he is not trying.

it just seems to me that he can not get the job done here. i would rather see CU part ways with him and see CU and DH end up better off in the long run for doing so. i wish no ill will to DH or his family. to do so is too personal. i think he is a good guy, trying to do the right thing. he just cant win at CU that at the end of the day, that is what matters.

i wish CU could just hand him his check, shake hands, thank him for his effort and tell him goodbye and better luck in the future.

i understand the frustration and as i said, im as guilty as anyone but, when i step back and think about it.... does it have to be so personal?

the above is just a guilty stream of thought. not on a soap box. just some thoughts. do with them as you choose.

The longer he is coaching here the more problems we are going to have, particularly in the recruiting front. CU is basically looked at nationally right now in one of two ways:

"Wow, how did Colorado get so horrible?"

or, perhaps even worse: "They have a football team in boulder?"

Recruiting is going to be a nightmare this year. It was last year. It will only get worse. CU is starting to look like a place that talent comes to die. Other coaches are going to sell that hard.

He's standing in front of a mirror, with two goals.

1. Recombing his hair trying to find a new do.
2. Affirmations: I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!

I know what he's doing... He sent out a twitter.

He's reading, said it's a good one, and he can't wait to use what he's learned....

zbuff, thanks for the reply. Eric and the double do a radio show in Phoenix and they say that line every so often.

A more self serving release to the press I have never seen.
This says, my baby is getting trounced on the field but he feels so bad he wont even come home to his wife and family. Nobody should be mean to my husband or even think about firing him, look what he is going through. Thanks Misti, but I would rather you kept all this stuff to yourself.

He's probably went to the uc davis-boise game and got booed by both teams fans.

As long as cu plays QB's they have to, instead of who they want, this program will stay in mediocrity.

No Twitter updates, I was hoping to hear something about "game planning" or "watching film" or his ever popular "great team meeting, time for Texas". But total silence from our fearless leader.

Dan Hawkins is a smart man. He would not be where he is if he wasn't. I'm sure that he is suffering through this as much as anyone. Self doubt has to be creeping into his psyche. I wish him the best. These can't be easy times for him or for anyone else. We'll all move on from this better people. Tomorrow is another day.
