Ah yes, it is that time of year again. The first hints of the carousel warming up are in the air.

Please do not let this thread degenerate into a Fire Hawk thread, even though, I, and many others, suspect, even secretly hope, CU will be one of the plastic horsies circling in search of a yet to be named winsome rider (coach). Let's not jump the gun until something firm is known in that regard.

Feel free to chime in with tidbits you come across in the media, or back channels. Hell, throw in rumor if you like.

First bits of news:

FSU- Bowden era over at the end of the year and Jimbo Fisher at the helm. No real news there except that FSU is drawing up the paperwork now and Mickey Andrews will follow his boss to the Golf Course.

Louisville- AD Jurich meeting with candidates to replace Kragthorpe who won't last the year.
 
I would argue weis is close as well... a few other bounces the last few weeks and his team is on a bad losing streak...
 
I'll bet we'll see Al Groh get canned too. The win over NC was good, but the Wahoos won't make it out of the ACC with more than another win or two.

Let's credit pollsters for not having them ranked because of the mediocre-at-best competition they've played. But if they win 9 or 10 games, which is still very likely, the ND boosters won't be smart to realize the only reason he accomplished that is because of the schedule and the fact that 2 of their opponents have gift-wrapped wins for them.
 
Weis is another Hawkins. He might back his fat ass into 8-9 wins this year, and the Irish faithful will be claiming they're back on top. His team should be 1-3 right now, just like us. I'm thinking he'll be around at least one more year.

Exactly, except maybe the Hawkins part. I think even if he only wins 8 that will be enough to get him at least another year, And they only have 4 more lose-able games on the schedule (USC, BC, Pitt, Stanford), and given their luck factor, I think they'll go at least 2-2 in those games, which puts them at 9-3 and may even get them an undeserving BCS bowl bid.
 
Sounding a little bit like Bobby Bowden might be available :lol:

I hope he is... Less competition for us in the coaching meat market...
 
Those familiar with the Pac-10: Does Jeff Tedford ever feel the hot seat, or is Cal okay with him just leading them to bowl eligibility, recruiting solid athletes and beating USC or Oregon on occasion?

A&M has a favorable schedule against the North with road games at CU and KSU plus ISU in College Station. TT and BU are games the Aggies should win. Based on how this season has gone, Sherman won't have any excuses for not leading A&M to a bowl game this season.

That guy comes across as an arrogant bastard, but the truth of the matter is that he's a great coach. CU can't afford him, but I'd love to have him.

Bowl losses to USC, WVU and maybe Boise State were a touch embarrassing, but at least they were BCS Bowls. The losses to LSU and Florida (especially Florida) were decent games in which OU competed.

OU can rumble all they want. After the trio they went through to get Stoops, they'd be silly to take their chances again.

Given the academic requirements at Cal all Tedford can be expected to do is no better than the service academies, Northwestern, etc. He's never gonna get the thugs in that are needed to go all the way. All he has to do is run a clean program
 
I can see Tommy Tuberville for the Louisville or the Virgina job.

I brought up Chris Kelly from Cinncinnati in a different thread because Cinncinnati seems to be falling short on its promises to build facilities and Kelly has a provision in his contract taking his buyout to just about zero shall Cinncinnati not fullfill its promises on facilities. Cinncinnati's team practices in their own stadium since there is no practice facility for the football team, Nippert Stadium has no suiteboxes, and neither is coming as far as I know.

The Louisville job is definetly the most attractive one because Virigina is very much like CU...academic school who don't care much for their football program except when they play Virigina Tech.

It sounds like Ralph Friedgen won't back at Maryland. Again, I'd say that the CU job is more attractive than Virigina and Maryland at this point and I lived in the Washington, DC area while I was going to college in DC and I went to some Maryland football games myself. UMD is a basketball school if you asked me.

This is not accurate at all. Cal has much lower admission standards for athletes than we do. You don't think Marshawn Lynch and Desean Jackson are the thug types?

Cal has higher admission standards than Colorado. Lynch & Jackson seem like idiots but both had the necessary transcripts to go to Cal, Jackson was set to go to USC before changing his mind if anybody remembers.

Actually, I think he's right. While admission requirements for the regular student population are probably tougher than at CU, I've heard from more than one person that getting athletes into Cal is pretty easy. They aren't quite as easy as KSU, for example, but they're one of the easier schools in the Pac 10.

No way I could see that happening. UVA cant afford Tubberville, their school has had to make multiple cutbacks on their athletic programs.

Brian Kelly?

I dont see him leaving Cincinatti unless a Big 10 job opens up or a school like Colorado or UVA shovels him a lot of money, Cincy has recruited well and their athletic department has focused more finances on their football team than their basketball team in recent years.

The Louisville job has 2 problems that whichever coach takes over is going to have to deal with: 1.) Kentucky isnt exactly a hotbed of local talent 2.) Joker Phillips(Rich Brooks' successor at UK) owns the state in recruiting

The Maryland job is already filled, and its going to James Franklin. Fridge will stick around no matter what happens this season due to the youth on the team for this season, but with another bad season he'll be forced into "retirement".

I was referring to the student population with my post.

However their standards are very high for their athletic teams, although Cal in 2004-2005 had the highest number of special admits into their school for football at 95%. Looks like the U$C approach to recruiting players.

Cal ABSOLUTELY has different requirements for athletes than their general student population, and their athletic requirements are not as rigid as CU.

Jason Kidd could barely read when he started at Cal.

You just don't realize how attractive the Louisville job is. They are expanding their stadium into the 66 to 68k range and they are all chairback seats...much like a NFL stadium. I never said the state of Kentucky was a hotbed of recruiting but Rich Brooks explained how attractive UK was to 2/3s of the country's population not being that far away from Kentucky and you can put Louisville in that category since they are part of a BCS conference. Louisville isn't that far away from the southern edge of Ohio, a hot bed of football recruits and the distance from Florida and Texas isn't too great as well. If you put Mack Brown at either UK or Louisville, those programs will be in the Top 25 on a consistent basis. UK and UL needs is a coach who can coach and recruit.

Absolutely false, Cal has very very lenient admissions standards for athletes, UCLA is the toughest of the UC's to get into for athletes. CAl is about as hard to get into as USC.
