Coach McCarney

I've avoided speculation on new coaches, mostly because it made me a little uncomfortable.

But I'm beginning to distance myself from the current staff enough to participate.

Okay, I realize that Coach McCarney isn't on anybody's dream list. His overall record at ISU wasn't spectacular. I've gotta believe it was somewhat better than Chizak's however.

What he did manage to do was take his underresourced, undertalented teams to five bowl games. Not great bowls, but he knocked out some winning seasons in our division in an environment of minimal fan and institutional support (speculating on that last one, but c'mon...Iowa State). He won a couple bowls, lost a few more, but they were always close.

He's been at Florida and South Florida, and may have developed some contacts down there. Coupled with a staff that has some sway in California and Texas, maybe he can recruit.

He would probably fit our school's budget, and could have some genuine success in a school with better recognition, tradition, facilities and a fat Nike contract. Also, assuming the talent we have now, stays, he'd have a little something to work with.

Just spit-ballin' here, I'm not exactly sold on this idea--but it hasn't been floated yet either.

When dealing with the fiscal realities of our Athletic Department, is this guy a legitimate candidate?

Weren't there some "character" issues with him at ISU like getting a secretary pregnant or something?

A double hell no. We need a leader not an ISU retread unless he wants to be a position coach.

I don't see McCarney being able to take this program to where we want it to be. He did a good job at ISU given his resources, but we need a higher profile hire IMO.

If Hawkins is let go after this season, I am hoping Houston parts way with Kubiak and we take a second shot at bringing him up to CU.

I think he would be a great fit and I think he has the right intangibles to be a success at CU.

I wonder if McCarney has the energy to do a second rebuilding job in the Big 12 North? What he did at ISU was nothing short of remarkable given ISU's history. McCarney is just only a few months older than my father which means he's only 56 and still has about 10 years left in the tank.

I would definetly support McCarney as the coach and you have to wonder what he has learned at Florida and South Florida and how that can be applied here.

There were no pregnant secretaries. Let's squelch that one. I believe there were some domestic violence allegations. Whether they went past allegations I don't know.

For the life of me, I'll never understand why ISU fired the only guy who won with any consistency there. But you also have to remember, ISU played Iowa and cupcakes for their OOC. That was part of the winning at ISU. They could also JUCo there way to success (remember Seneca Wallace?).

I'm not sure McCarney is a huge step up from Hawk, but right now, if I had to choose, I'd lean towards McCarney.

I think McCarney did a great job with what he had at ISU. I think people should really consider what McCarney actually did in Ames.

He'd be a great fit somewhere else.

The guy CU should really hope becomes available is Mark Richt. Georgia is off to a bad start, and they won't tolerate a mediocre season. All the guy does is win 9 to 10 games a year and competitively recruit in the SEC. Root for Georgia to lose, so their coach is available.

let me add a resounding **** NO! to this thread.

is the goal to be just north of .500? and to usually sneak your way into the weedwhacker bowl?

is that the ****ing goal?

if so, then dan mccarney is a perfect hire.

if, however, we want to swing for the fences, let's get someone who might, just might, take us back to the level this program once resided at.

... except this time, let's not trust bohn alone on who is a "homerun" hire--- he needs help making the decision.

A lot of people underestimate this guy. What he did in Ames is quite an achievement. He's an excellent coach.

Yes very good coach besides, what the hell else did he have to do in Ames? He'd be flyfishing, skiing, hiking or something in Boulder on his off time. JK Valdez, he is a good coach. Imho, he isnt what we need. We need an ass kicker, a leader. By the way, any flyfishermen on this board give me the 411 on the waters up North, im all ears. I have the southwest pegged already, ready for a new challege.

I never thought my voice would waver when I said this, but... all together now...

We can do better.

I mentioned him several weeks ago and I like him. No one else does though apparently. I know one thing-he would instantly get us in the mix with Florida high school players. He was able to find Florida talent at ISU even.

I like him, its not that, I just think hawk has made us so soft, its time for something else. We need to be hitting in practice, period. U cant learn to tackle if u dont hit live. Also dont give me this junk about we were better with the weasel, thats when we started getting soft and it only stopped when Barnett had his fame here. We've had a stretch of bad years except for 2001. Hawk cant do it like he did at Boise and I think that holds alot of weight here

Fair enough.

Ditto that. THis guy's record was really good at ISU if you consider the before and after. If he was in Boulder, I think there's no question he would have done much better than in Ames. He's kicking butt at Florida as well. This guy will be a HC somewhere else very soon and brings great connections in Texas and now in Florida. I'd be all over this guy.

i could be wrong, McCarney could be the answer to our prayers. I doubt it but ok. Like I said, im all ears, wanted to hear more about flyfishing waters up north valdez, i know you from up there. Dont tell anybody but im a native of Colorado. I was born in hippytown USA and if you from Colorado, u probably know where that is. Any of yall flyfish?

I dont get what people don't like in this guy? He was coaching in Ames... Ames! Consider that when you consider his achievements. He knows the big 12, the north especially. And the connections sound very good to me.

I like his resume plenty. I just think there's a reason why coaches who get dismissed at one school have trouble getting hired at another school in the same conference. All of the other North schools had years that fell short of expectations and not one of McCarney's teams capitalized on it and fought for a conference championship. His team's finishes in the North were as follows:

1st (tied): 1
2nd (tied): 1
3rd: 3
5th: 2
6th: 4

Throw out what has happened to the program since 2006 and imagine your expectations for Colorado football before they were tainted and subconsciously lowered by the current regime. [math intermission] Okay, now does an average finish of 4th (adjusted for Ames or not) excite you? Is that acceptable for a head coach?

I think Hawkins did a great job with what he had at BSU. I think people should really consider what McCarney actually did in Boise.

or...

I think Barnett did a great job with what he had at Northwestern. I think people should really consider what Barnett actually did in Evanston.

Have we learned our lesson yet? The truly successful coaches we've had here were assistants at other big time colleges first. I'm talking about Crowder and McCartney. I'm convinced that's the direction we need to go now.

Learned our lesson? Every situation is different. Every coach has his own deal. Just because Barnett and Hawkins have held HC jobs previously doesn't really make a difference imo. Not a very strong argument.

Well then neither is the argument that what he did in Ames would translate to success in Boulder. I agree completely, it's a very lame argument.
