Really starting to doubt him, he just doesn't show it like Speedy does. I don't know what it is, but he is a physical speciman for a RB, but just goes down too easy. Speedy breaks tackles. I would like to see Scott do well, but I just don't see 5 star or even 4 star in him.

I just dont see him getting any playing time to prove that he is a star RB....I do feel that he is a "more carries, better he runs" type of back, needs the O-line to make the hole for him. Were speedy is more like a Barry Sanders type, just makes what he can out of what he sees....

I believe in Scott. I've seen flashes of brilliance. He'll be great.

He's not as quick as RS, needs a bit of time to get his speed up, but then he crashes into people, while Speedy is twisting away and harder to grab.

I agree that Stewart has won the first team job, but I will still defend Scott. I don't go to the practices to see him work, but I think the staff really could have utilized him better in the first games. He wasn't even given enough carries during Toledo. When he's in these days, I'm not seeing a whole lot of holes for him (a few times, yes, but not a lot for him to run through). Scott's ability is shown in his return game - he does make good reads and breaks tackles.

I also think if he's lacking something, coaches could help him out better. I'm tired of seeing talented players not show improvement while at CU. Coaches need to get it in gear.

That is a good post, makes you kind of wonder what type of practice player he is....but hard for the coaching staff to help him improve if that dont put him in in game time situations

The thing about Scott, when he is in the game the defense knows pretty much what's coming. Except for the occasional screen, when he is in the game we are running the ball. They need to start using him on passing downs and run him in routes, he's pretty good at that and has better hands than Sumler, and if we are less predictable when Scott is in the game there might actually be a hole when he runs. Its hard to judge how good he is at breaking tackles when he is hitting a solid wall of people.

And now that our QB can make the first guy miss, his pass protection skills are much less of an issue.

he lacks vision, thats for damn sure. Don't know if you can fix that via coaching, but they damn well need too. He just doesn't seem to have his head in the game emotion wise at ALL. He's a back that seems to do well when he gets that fire stoked, and really didn't have it yesterday until late in the game. Plus, he takes awful angles and never makes a guy miss...

Hope he sticks it out and works on it and gets better. He has all the physical tools, thats for damn sure.

I do feel that he is a "more carries, better he runs" type of back, needs the O-line to make the hole for him.

That's what I'm seeing. As long as our o-line is pretty much only opening holes on passing downs I think Speedy is going to be by far the better back. If we ever get to the point that the o-line is opening holes for the running game, I think Scott could be a beast....

has anybody seen scott take more than 7 carries a game? no so how is he not a 5 star if he never gets the carries as stewart does? thats what hawky is scared of is to play kids that are in his sons click.

difference is, Speedy doesn't need 10 carries to get good runs. AP didn't need 10 carries to get good runs as well and thats who Scott was compared to coming out of HS.

When he bounced that guy off of the return and was juiced I was pumped! I love a guy that isn't afraid of contact and that's what he excels at. The guy can move the pile and is a bruiser. He isn't a finesse back, but I agree that he needs to work on his vision.

Oh, and yesterday was the first time I can remember Speedy breaking tackles. I love the guy, but yesterday he proved he's the first teamer and it's not even close. That TD at the end of the game was sheer will power. Power. Add 20 more pounds to his frame and he'll be even nastier.

I was disappointed he didn't get 7 - 10 carries last night. He was electric on KRs. He seemed to have emotion and desire. Rather then giving him a couple of carries after those physical returns, he went and sat on the bench.

Stewart is clearly the #1 back, but I think Scott should be given the chance for 35% to 40% of the carries for a couple of games.

He should be out there on the 3rd down plays....he's looked much better in passing situations, and if he has a chance to make a play he'll damn sure catch the ball and do something.

I really wish he'd see the field more & Sumler not so much.

I think he should switch to TE.

Seriously.

I think Scott looks awesome when he has space. He does not really have any "moves" but he does have some decent speed once he gets going and he's a pretty big dude. I think his "vision" of where he needs to go is not very good.

His first carry he had the entire side of the field open, and he got caught by the DE. Then there was a play where he got a pitch and the play was set up perfectly for him to follow his blockers outside and go around the corner, he cut it up inside and got stoned for no gain.

He has shown pretty decent hands. I wonder how he'd do if he was a non-blocking TE (sort of a flanker).

I respectfully disagree. I don't think Scott shows any sign of making any "reads" whatsoever. He catches the ball and runs like a bat out of hell in a straight line. He doesn't make any cutbacks or jukes or anything like that.

Is the key part of your sentence. Right now, our o-line is a sieve. RS's quickness kept a lot of runs from being stopped in the backfield.

I imagine he has been coached to do that. Remember last year when there were no holes in the oline and he'd kinda just stop and shuffle his feet? I think the coaches have told him to not think and just run fast straight ahead. That would work wonderfully if there were holes where he is supposed to run, but there aren't.

first of all i think speedy is very special, they joke that he's like sproles, i think he's in that league. he gets yards when nobody else could. he's very very quick and our line needs someone that can do the barry sanders. i thought scott looked good on the screen but he can't quite make that one last guy miss and hit his stride, it is frustrating

I think Darrell Scott is the real deal. I just don't know if his full potential will ever be developed and utilized under Hawks regime.

He always seems to be in the dog house over something. He seldom gets more than two or three carries and if he doesn't shine in those two or three he is quickly shelved for the rest of the game.

The line is not dominant. He needs a big, tough, mean line to support his style of running.

I don't think that he is being coached through some of his shortfalls. Not many players come out of high school and immediately star but after two years he should be further along and that speaks to coaching and perhaps some attitude on his part.

Too bad, we carp and groan about getting talented recruits and then the Buffs just don't seem to know what to do with one of the truly elite running backs in the nation when we get one.

I see Houston all over again

I have been a big supporter of DS. I still think he can be great.

Problems I see:

1) Appears to have been coached out of his instincts. Too much thinking going on.
2) Lack of confidence

He does not have a burst when he first gets the ball, needs to build up some steam first. That's why he seems to be better on KO returns, once he gets rolling he's a load.

I have no idea is Scott is any good, he hasn't had nearly enough chances to prove anything. I know he runs hard as hell on Kick returns and I feel like he may break one every time he gets a return. But from the RB position no one can honestly say he has had a fair shake in terms of carries. And when he has gotten 10-12 carries he has looked impressive. See Toledo.

I think Speedy deserves the starting job and I am very grateful we have him but D Scott has not had a chance to really show his skills as a running back. I am starting to doubt he will ever actually get that chance.

I really wish Sumler would stop getting carries, he just doesn't have it. Give the ball to Scott or Lockridge in my opinion.

LtCol - I guess we're just going to disagree, but he I think has made the good reads of where to run it. Sure, in kickoff return, it's probably a lot more easier, but he finds the seams to run it.

I think Scott will get it together if given the opportunity and help from the OLine. I agree that Stewart has won the starting job, but if we had a decent OLine, Scott may show that he can get the job done. As far as the Houston comment - No Way. Houston was a prima dona that didn't work hard enough. It seems like Scott is working hard...just not hard enough to appease hawk? I still blame Hawk for this ****ty situation.

I don't agree that Lockridge should be given the ball more. I do agree that Sumler should have his carries reduced. Stewart and Scott should get the bulk of the carries. Lockridge - I do want him on the field more...particularly on punt returns. Espinoza is so slow back there.

I've been a big defender of DS and very critical of the coaching staff because I've felt that he's got the knowledge and the skill but he just hasn't been given a fair shake to show what he can do. Last night that changed a little.

On the toss sweep to the left play he was in last night Behrens and the Oline did a very good job setting up the blocks to make a nice hole for him to run through to the outside but he didn't see it and cut it inside into oncoming defenders and had to fight his way through tackles just to get back to the LOS. I watched this play over and over and I think had he gone through the hole that was blocked the play would have gone for 6-8 yards (maybe more).

I don't know how he misses the hole that the play was designed to create. It seems ,me that it has to come down to either DS doesn't know where the hole is supposed to be on each play, he doesn't see the hole or he is panicing and not giving the line enought time to create the hole. To me this boils down to meaning that DS needs a lot more coaching. Technical coaching. Specific running coaching. Sadly, I don't think Hagan is a very good technical coach and I have a bad feeling that DS will end up as a story of wasted potential. If we had EB coaching our RB's I think DS would be running much differently.

The only thread of hope I'm hanging onto is that in 2001, Chris Brown started off the season very slowly. There were a few games in the middle part of the season where he didn't play at all or barely saw the field but he finished very strong that year. I'm hoping DS has a break out game in the next three weeks and proves that he can do what we all hope he can do.

Oh, and if you missed it, Speedy twisted his ankle on that last TD run last night. DS is one play away...

I know and he did a good job of disguising the fact that his ankle was hurt but he went strait to the trainer after the play and they taped him up quickly. He went back in on the next series so I don't think it was that bad but I have my fingers crossed just in case.

I think he was amazing last night. He showed me that he clearly should be the starter.

Yes, this was the play I was talking about where he misread his move. If he had followed the blockers around the corner, he could have had a nice gain.

Also - I rewatched the opening drive when Scott was in. The 1st play - the safety made the tackle on him.
