Iowa going undefeated is the darkhorse in all of this. If the Big 10 gets dicked out of a MNC shot then there is going to be MAJOR uproar. Too bad both the Pac10 and Big10 won't have undefeated champs with the SEC and Big 12. It'd be nice to see those 2 conferences choke on their own dick for not allowing a playoff.

Have fun at the Rose Bowl pricks!

i wasn't too impressed with Texas yesterday. it was a rivalry game and got squirrelly there for a while....but their O really struggled when OU took away the deep throws. all that dink and dunk, McCoy threw for 127 (5 yards a completion). either of those SEC big boy D's are going to be every bit as athletic as OU (more, maybe) and UT doesn't have WR's who can get separation as shown yesterday so UF or Bama can load up at the LOS and play man.

UT's front 4 is for real, though.

I still think Bama is the team to beat, they are well balanced on both sides of the ball....

I think Bama is a clear #1 right now and the dropoff to #2 is pretty significant. The question in my mind is whether Bama will peak too early.

In the days after Southern Cal lost, ALL the talking heads said, "They'll pay for this - they can't be pushed over everyone else this year." That loss is totally forgiven at this point, as yesterday's wrap-up shows had "They're the best team" or "One of the two best teams".

Only when playing bad teams. No other team has more 4-5 star recruits on it - they should have 60-70 game unbeaten streak with all of Pete's recruiting prowess and pay-off schemes.

I certainly haven't seen any indication that Florida plays better than Alabama, though. Bama's got several close scoreboard wins despite strong, overpowering on-field performances - I'm surprised that they're not winning by 2-3-4 TDs instead of 3, 6 or 7 points.

Florida's sneaking by against a lot of opponents but is given every benefit of a doubt, which is fine. Texas hasn't done much to deserve anything BUT wins - certainly no boasting is going on in Austin. How can a senior QB look so baffled? How can he be so bottled up and so easily defended by every team for at least one half?

I've been impressed with Iowa's grind'em-down process, and Bama's pound'em-down play. Lack of QB accuracy seems to have fled the Big 12, and their 70% QBs are now joining everyone else's 50+% QBs.

BOULDER - your "Bama peak too early" concern will be an interesting point to watch.

NMB - I think we need to have a couple of years of 4-5-6 undefeated teams get 'dicked out' of MNC appearances. Apparently, one screwed-up season won't change anything. I'm all for having two.

Chuck, but the Big10 is certainly the biggest boy when it comes to TV audiences and pull. That's why if they get screwed out of a MNC appearance (and win at the Rose Bowl) there will be uproar. You can't say the same if a Big12 team gets left out.

Interesting (and justified IMO) to see Boise starting to pay for their weak schedule, and the polls aren't going to get any kinder to them with the way their remaining schedule sets up. Iowa will move ahead of them in the coming weeks if they keep winning and maybe Miami will too.

NMB, "biggest TV draw" hmmm... I don't know. I think the SEC gets larger TV dollars - and I think tens of millions more. I believe their conference sharing pay-outs are much much larger than Big-10 pay-outs.

Since this is all fueled by the TV Dollar, this makes me think "TV draw" isn't as big for Big-10. Philly, Pittsb, Ohio, Chicago, StLouis are huge populations, but I suspect pro-teams syphon off many fans. (Although, have you seen what Philly's TEMPLE is doing? They've actually won four games - THIS SEASON! Amazing!)

I have a feeling the biggest TV markets (NYC, LA, Atlanta-Florida) have Atlanta-Florida steeped in SEC-dom, and LA in Pac10-dom, and NYC has pro football teams only. I'm not sure where Big-10 viewership spreads, especially with Big East and ACC invasions in the past 10 years.

NMB, one more argument to counter your thought that the Big-10 would gather more fire and brimstone if 'excluded'. Penn State and that coach of theirs - uh, what's his name? Hmmm - he's not very well known - almost a rookie? - well, whatever... he's had how many undefeated seasons (5?) and how many Nat'l Champs? 2, I think. "Getting screwed out because undefeated" is almost a pattern. Of course, at least one of those, HE chickened out and elected not to put his undefeated team against the only other undefeated team - Jan 1, 1971. He had his chance then, and I've often wondered if pollsters haven't punished him all those subsequent times, too.

Somebody was talking about this last week (I think it was MiamiBuffs) and he was saying that there's alot of Big10 viewers all over the place, and that's indicative of the ABC weekly coverage maps for the 3:30 EST games. They usually feed Big 10 games into most of the Northeast despite there being numerous Big East schools up there and one ACC school. Same with the state of Florida, I was noticing yesterday how odd it was that most of Florida was getting a Big 10 game despite an ACC game on at the same time and the presence of 2 ACC schools in the state.

CaroB, yes, and in Texas, the SW and Calif, too.

Oh, about the Pacific Coast TV watching... one distinct disadvantage that the Pac-10 has is that many of their games start 'late at night' according to East Coast viewers so the argument is that Pac-10's viewership is seldom east of the Mississippi except for early afternoon games.

Conversely, every East-Coast game can be easy-watching hours for West Coasters. For the Pac-10, this is their disadvantage For Big 10-East-ACC, this is to their advantage so I'd expect the Eastern conferences to have bigger TV numbers than Pac-10. ND might be a thorn in there, though. Having their own network plus an annual game with USC supposedly guarantees a TV draw. This is why I argue that the Big-10 screwed up by not getting ND to join them instead of letting even their basketball program slip into the Big East.

Last year, SEC teams were projected to get conference-sharing dollars in the $12-14 million range, and Big 10 were only $8m. Big 12 was $10 million. I assume this is "TV dollars" and thus has some basis in viewership, but it could be based solely on bowl-TV, and not season-long TV.

I don't recall ND saying they would join the Big 10 if the conference would let them join in football only. The Big 10 tried to get them to join about 10-15 years ago and ND almost got off their high horse, but then they let their arrogance get in the way and decided not to join. The way I understand it now is that the Big 10 is done kissing ND's ass and says that if ND is interested in joining, then they need to approach the Big 10. But I don't think there's much doubt that the Big 10 will go to 12 teams in the near future so they can have a CCG and gain that extra cash.

Wow - where's Southern Cal? Doesn't the BCS collapse without their Trojans? Well, it's still early... plenty of time to regain #1.

CaroB, your version is how I remember it, too - and somewhere, NBC stepped in and said they'd pay ND even more and be their private network. I remember many fans thought this was an unsavory move for NBC to make, and I am only sorry that ND ever wins any game.

Chuck, ESPN was scared when the SEC was thinking about starting it's own network. Combined with their CBS deal they were going to be the odd man out. They ponied a lot of money to not have a repeat of of the B10N.

When was the last time Joe Pa went undefeated? I think Penn St was in the Big East at that time.

Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Minneapolis, Madison and Pitssburgh are huge markets and the big ten has huge, huge schools with a lot of alums. There is a reason why their TV coverage is so great.

They had an undefeated team in the mid-90's and won the Rose Bowl but didn't even share the MNC, but I don't recall if they were in the Big 10 yet or not.

Penn State was never in the Big East.

Outside of Harvard-Yale, I can't think of more storied programs with a longer history of constant press coverage than the Big 10, that's for sure.

I agree with others - Alabama looks like the team to beat. The coaches poll is always a little screwy in places. It will be interesting to watch BSU drop week by week in the BCS poll, as the computers increasingly dislike their schedule.

B12 schools have a stronger history than the B10, especially if you don't go back beyond WW2.

Yes, Oklahoma's dynasty is still holding some records. Texas, TCU - all had a decade or two of dominance. But because those aren't located in the Northeast (or the inaccurately-named but popularly monikered "Midwest"), they've never received the amount of media attention.

Let's not delude media attention with facts! Don't you realize the power of advertising!! ha ha
