Don't look now - Big 12 North WIDE open!

Obviously, it's still a tad early in the Big 12 part of the schedule for everyone, but check out the Big 12 North as of this moment:

NORTH
CONF OVERALL
Kansas State 2-1 4-3
Kansas 1-1 5-1
Nebraska 1-1 4-2
Colorado 1-1 2-4
Iowa State 1-2 4-3
Missouri 0-1 4-1

Everyone is effectively even. CU's schedule breaks down nicely the rest of the way, with the toughest North teams at home. OSU on the road is maybe a stretch, but after that, why can't this team win what's left? I still don't buy KSU and ISU.

Maybe this is a bit of dreaming here, but it's entirely plausible. That's how big tonight's win was.

Come on Buffs!

PS: And OSU is looking like they'll beat Mizzou... they might be in a deep hole after tonight!

Next week:

Colorado at Kansas State
Iowa State at Nebraska
Oklahoma at Kansas
Texas at Missouri

MU will probably be 0-3 in B12N play coming in to our game.

Yup! And Mizzou looked pretty bad last night in the second half. I think they might have given up by the time they come to Boulder, so beating the Tigers is something I can definitely see happening.

CU can win at KSU; they're bad (and A&M is worse). Nebraska will probably beat ISU and honestly, I could see KU beating OU. At 3-3 with a loss to UT, their season is over and they have to go on the road for their next game without Bradford - they might be emotionally done.

The important thing to remember is that there's still a real shot of winning the North. In a year like this, CU still has a shot even after the debacle that was the first quarter of the season.

I just looked at KU's remaining schedule and they're about done in the North race because at the very best they go 4-2 the rest of the way, but it's more likely to be 3-3 or even 2-4.

I'd have thought Mizzou's rebuilding year would have still outstripped KSU's. K-State can still drop 4, and I hope CU starts them down that path.

I think the sentiment "Mizzou's done for Big 12 North Champ" is correct. Baylor's their only upcoming opponent that is certainly beatable, but by that time, Baylor's 3rd String QB could have learned the ropes, too.

I'm not sure how Neb's offense will score enough points to beat anyone but Baylor either. Baylor was held to 3 points by Iowa State's defense until the the game's final seconds. Neb's should match that and more, even in Baylor's stadium. Still, can Neb's offense outscore anyone that gets even more than 2 FGs? It only takes one slip in their secondary, and that's a quick TD.

This bleak assessment also covers Colorado. One win is great. Hawkins will demonstrate the team's goodness in weeks to come - only the game against ta&m appears as a certain win. Winning in Manhattan this weekend is Step 2 with quite a few after that.

To answer your question, no we can't score any points right now. Big problems on offense and until we figure it out we are vunerable as hell.

BigRed, care to give your views of Neb O-problems, and maybe recap other fans' differing views, too?

I assume you're fairly pleased with the progress of the Defense, all things considering. It HAS been improving - although I realize the relativity of that comment!

The defense is much better than they were last season and obviously our defensive line is the strong point of the defense. Our LB's are young, but athletic and have a nose for the ball. The secondary is up and down, but okay, if you get them back on their heels they tend to get frustrated and a few of them make mistakes. Asante is the leader of the secondary and has really come out of his shell so far this season. I want to kill O'Hanlon and one point and then hug him at the next point, he's so up and down.

The offensive problems begin with the O-line. You can have Payton Manning in there right now and this O-line would let him get destroyed. They make alot of mistakes, have a large amount of penalties, and don't seem to be fast enough to keep up with athletic defensive lines. Second problem is the QB position. Lee has been up and down all season and has become inaccurate as a QB in the past few games. He has a problem with tucking the ball and running if the opportunity presents itself and obviously that needs to be done sometimes instead of going for the homerun. The receivers are young and inexperienced and have gotten worse as the season has progressed. The TE's, Mike McNeil, is the bright spot in all of this as he is our best receiver right now and catches just about anything that comes close to him.

RB was supposed to be a bright spot, but with Helu fighting to flu, a banged up shoulder, and trying to carry the entire offense he's starting to wear down some. Burkhead broke his foot in practice last week and is out for at least a month if not longer. We don't have a clear cut #2 back to step up in his position and the guys that were behind Burkhead don't pick up the blitz that well.

Lastly, our play calling, it's ridiculous at best. Watson either runs the ball a few times on an inside hand off, throws a swing pass to the left, or goes for the homerun. We don't attack the middle of the field and it's open for attacking most of the time. With the tightend we have we should be all over that, but helmet head can't seem to figure that out. Pound the rock, attack the middle of the field, and occasionally go for a long pass when the defense allows it. Hopefully with Green possibly getting the start next week it'll fix a few of the offensive problems, but I doubt it.

We tried to warn you guys!
