It seems like Hawkins isn't going to let any assistants go. Regardless of their units performances. But I really hope Hawk can see the light with Riddle. Let him keep on coaching the TE's, but I think it's time for someone else to run the special teams unit. It's really embarrassing every time they run out there.

The main thing I don't understand about the special teams is how we still have Espinoza out there returning punts. I've complained elsewhere about this, but the kid is simply too slow. Give him credit for working his ass off to get on the field, but in spite of his sure-handedness, we could use some speed. We have a shift guy that could see the field more often - Lockridge. Why wasn't he taught how to receive punts?

I do think our return blocking is decent. Scott has lanes and blockers to go through, and there have been times that the punt return units have set up a wall nicely or have people in position for a decent return...but we don't have the guy back there with the ability to run to the blocks/holes/wedges.

some our assistants need to go...if not the head coach as well. They have lots to prove through the rest of the year.

The punt returners job, first and foremost, is to catch the punt. The only issue I had yesterday with Espy was that he let a punt drop in front of him. That was just one kick, though.

We haven't been hurt by our punt return team at all this year. That's a vast improvement over last year. I'll take it.

Not so sure I agree with this. Kick returns have been pretty solid this year. We also have a blocked field goal. I am more worried about our kickers in general. Goodman has hit more uprights in his career at CU than actual field goals.

The revamped line play is saving Bandison's ass. Unsure to what degree his recruiting helps the program, but what a difference the last two games have made on my impression of him. The TEs are fine in regard to their receiving prowess, now if they could block better for Tyler and the runners they'd be top of the line. If Riddle can't see with his own eyes that someone would be a better returner than Espy and designate that player the new PR guy he needs to be stripped of that duty.

Apparently we're in the minority Valdez, but I think special teams have been below average for several years now and Riddle really needs to be relieved of his duties there. It seems like we give up one big play a game in the special teams, and I'm not talking about a long kick return or anything. Last night was the fake punt, the game before was a blocked punt (among other things). The list goes on.

I also must echo duke's sentiments on Espinoza. I know the first job of a punt returner is to catch the ball, but damn, we need to help our offense with field position every once in a while off of punts as well. A 1.7 yard average is not going to cut it.

I will say Bandison is quietly redeeming himself, even Collins is stepping up too.

This performance shouldn't be tolerated at CU.

No way Riddle loses his job as long as Juicebox is running the show. He's the highest paid and most trusted assistant.

I'm with you valdez... as well as it always seems that we have different special teams formations every couple of weeks, that ends up costing us. I.E.--The swinging door punt formation, which got blocked for a TD last week.

I'm with you as well. ST play has been abysmal since Hawk showed up. Catching punts isn't good enough. Do something with it. And quit giving up big ST plays (blocked punts, runbacks, fake punts, etc).

I will also add that I feel like the special teams are where disciplined play is most pronounced on the football field. It is all about gap control, timing, etc. If there are major issues on special teams, I think it reflects very poorly on the special teams coach.

Kickoff returns have been good as well as coverage. FG's and goodman are inconsistent and for the high altitude, our punters should be ranked 1# every year.

As for punt returns, see any post made by Boulder Buff and insert I agree 100%.

Agree, not to give a history lesson, but back in the day there was a punt "returner" I think it was Tommy Morris. He probably ran a 10 flat 40, but NEVER dropped a punt and Mallory always had him back there. You knew he wasn't going to break one, but he never got us in trouble either.

I think ST is by far our weakest overall unit. Punt return is pathetic, might as well just tell Espy to fair catch it every time. I might be jaded due to being so upset about the fake punt on Sunday, but I really think Riddle has got to be one of the worst ST coaches in the country.

I dont think a change would hurt. I do like the kickoff and kickoff return games, leave them be. Punt has been crappy for the most part, DiLallo isnt cutting it. Who else punts? Punt coverage has been pretty decent. Punt return, ummmmm absolute garbage. I returned punts and kicks, yes, the first job is to catch it. However, that isnt the only job. Big plays and field position, in that area, mean more points and momentum for this team. We need some surehanded, speed back there. I know Rippy got a semi block this year but can we actually try and block some kicks and punts? Why are we setting up a punt return for a guy that isnt going anywhere anyway? Field goal team is frustrating. Goodman has an NFL leg but mentally just isnt there. If hitting the uprights counted, he'd be a hall of famer. Ive never seen anyone hit the uprights as much as he does, its unreal. He should find a contest for that.

Weren't paying attention on that play, were ya? The UT kid ran right up to the blocker on that side, the CU blocker saw him, stuck out an arm instead of blocking the UT player, then disengaged to run coverage. If our guy actually blocks on that play like he is supposed to, there is no punt-block!:wow:

Can't blame Riddle for a stupid mistake. Riddle's teams are top 15 in KO returns and KO coverage. But why confuse you with facts?

As for punt returns, several TV commentators have noted on several occasions that the rule and tactics in CFB have made punt returns very rare! Best thing Espy does is catch the friggin' ball!

As for Goodman, he had 5 touchbacks last week, doubling his season total, hit three FGs and 4 XPs. Kid has a great game and you want to crap in his kit? Get a real life, Bozo!

Actually, I blame Dilallo for the slowest release I've ever seen from a punter.
