Kensler (DP) on Cody...

http://blogs.denverpost.com/sports/2009/10/20/cody-hawkins-had-his-moments-too/

Nice reference to Hodge and Moschetti. Frankly, I don't think Klatt has much more ability either. He had a pretty sound scheme and supporting cast...

You can't be serious. All three of those QBs were more accurate, managed the game better, had stronger arms, and mobility. The numbers might not look as good on paper but that is because of the offence they played under. They played in a running offence which makes QBs throw more 3rd and long balls.

Cody is a great kid but not a D1 QB. IMO he would not have played this long if it wasn't for daddy. The next few weeks will tell the story.

Of the three, Moschetti probably had the most raw QB talent, followed by Klatt, then Hodge. Hodge was a nightmare. How soon we forget.

I am serious. Cody was pretty efficient in his freshmen year, when we had some guys around him and he wasn't expected to do it himself as much. All of those guys were nothing but ok ability wise, and they didn't have to do much. None had even average Athletic Ability for the Big 12 or average arms. They made a lot of short passes, they didn't run around too much, and they didn't hurt us. I haven't seen a good QB at CU since I started watching in the late 90's. I've seen adequate at best.

Hansen last week, was the best performance I've seen at CU. 1 game I know.

I don't think any of those guys would have fared too well in the offense we had last year or the first half of this year. They were very Cody-like, circa 2007.

Moschetti was a good college QB. So was Joel. Hodge was pretty mediocre. i never understood why we didn't get Hodge on the corner pitching to Purify. getting Purify on the corner would have been dangerous. Hodge had good wheels but no dropback skills and no arm.

hodge gets a bad rap. he pretty much single-handedly won the kjuco state game that year by throwing deep passes. he had a better deep ball than cody. hodge's skills were fairly limited, of course, but the staff did not expect to have to play him. he was a backup plan, not a 3 year starter like cody or 2 year like moschetti or 4 year like klatt.

also, hodge was flat-out told by the staff to not take ANY chances. watson didn't want him to improvise. they didn't want him to roll out. they didn't want him to do anything that could lead to a turnover. he was coached to turtle up. watson and the staff reckoned that they could win with just the run game and they didn't want hodge to do anything at all other than handoff and occassionally make a pass to keep the d a bit more honest.

finally, hodge played about the last 3 games of the year with a tornup knee. he never complained and it never made it into the media widely. he just quietly did what he was asked to do and didn't bitch. but, the result was that a lot of fans had the impression at the end that hodge would fall over at the slightest touch. that wasn't fair. he was (a) told to take the sack rather than risk a turnover and (b) unable to evade because of the knee in the last part of the year.

hodge was not one of our shining lights at qb, but i do think he is treated unfairly by the fans.

moschetti doesn't even belong in the conversation with hodge, klatt, and cody. he was light-years better than any of the 3. light years better. he was a legit major conf. qb.

I would put Klatt at the head of the class. Moschetti was a gamer, but second to Klatt, who was the most cerebral and probably the best passer.

Hodge's "deep passes" against KSU consisted of one deep pass to Hugh Charles (or maybe it was Calhoun, I get those two confused) in which Charles was isolated on the safety. It was a great pass and a well designed play, but I don't recall any others in Hodges time. The fact was he had no arm and the passing game was reduced to rollouts throwing shallow into the flats. The productivity of the running game that year was even more remarkable given we had zero passing threat.

Your memory is a little faulty. Hodge had passes of 41 yards, 71 yards and 94 yards in that game to Hackett, Calhoun and Bloom respectively. Go back and check Hodges results. He had a decent deep ball...that team was a run first team but the threat of the deep pass kept the DBs honest. KSU has an all-american corner back then. Check out the YPA for Hodge, a lot better than this year or last year.

I stand corrected, his stats were better than I remembered. He also had a pretty good receiving corp in McCoy, Hackett, Bloom, and Sypneiwski.

I know that we can argue about this until the end of time but Cody just does not have the skill set to be a Div 1A QB and certainly not the Big 12. After his first 6 games in 2007 there was enough film on him for DCs to easily defend him. You add together lack of mobility, height, and lack of arm strength - he has nothing to fall back upon when he got into trouble. Go back and look at 2007 and he was not all that efficient.

The yards gotten against Alabama started after the Crimson tide got up 27-0 and let up on the Buffs.

Once there was some decent film on him, teams figured out how to defend, Load the box against the run and be prepared to tackle the WR on a three yard curl or out pattern. After OU in '07 CH's productivity plummeted.

TH played great, but the next few weeks will be telling. Is he going to keep up the production when team's have film and can plan for him? That is when we'll know whether he's the man. Either way, I'd rather stick with him...we alaready know what's up with his predecessor.

Personally, I thought Moschetti was one of the best players to don a CU uniform. He competed every game. He just had that factor about him which made people believe CU was still in the game and could win. He was a warrior on the field. No matter how cerebral Klatt was, Moschetti's on-field performance and results were so superior that Moschetti was the better QB. All my opinion however. I also contend that Moschetti was just as good of a passer as Klatt.

The comment about Cody not being DI material - I disagree. I don't think he's a star or a QB that's going to rebuild a team. However, he has the tools to be a DI QB. His first season was a very solid season, and he's had some games where you think he could be a star. He's just not consistent enough with his reads or throws. He is a DI talent - just not maybe BCS starter material. I still give him props for how he worked hard for CU and took the demotion well - might not have liked it, but he took it.

Cody is a perfect D-I backup quarterback. A guy who can do a few things pretty well, but if you're stuck with him running the show for the entire season, you're screwed.

I reject that there was enough film in 6 games in 2007 to shut him down. We won some big games down the stretch, and Alabama was scared at the end. CU came very close to pulling that out.

Cody had nothing like the receiving tandem of McCoy, Hackett, Bloom, and Sypneiwski. However, we had some better ballers then than we've seen since and a lot better protection.

Let's hope Hansen makes this place a destination for QBs going forward because it hasn't been a destination since Slick Rick sent us in the down hill slide that translated to a series of JUCOS running the show followed by our miracle walk-on named Joel.

Maybe you can answer this question then buffaholic, without mentioning any other players. What about Cody Hawkins scares opposing defenses?

His arm strength? No. His scrambling ability? No. His pocket presence? No. His ability to progress through reads? No. Feel free to stop me at any time...

Like who? NU? Not hardly, that game was Cally's swan song and by that time NU was playing terribly, especially on D.

TT, ok I'll go along with that one. BUt during that stretch, the only other win was pre-Briles Baylor. Mix in losses to KU, KSU and ISU and it's not like CU was some sort of juggernaut.

IMO CH did the very best with what he had, and I don't fault him a bit. I also think there is and has been a better option on the roster. I would have gone another direction after KU last year. Maybe TH isn't the player we hope for, but he sure looked good last week. One wek doesn't answer all the questions so I guess we'll know more this weekend.

Yep. Moschetti was very legit - if he had played here 3-4 years he would own the CU record book

I'd take Moschetti and Klatt over Cody any day. I suppose we can argue that with a better support cast Cody could be good, but I just don't know about that. I mean, take this season for example, Cody couldn't do anything, yet Tyler comes in and has the best game you've seen in years with the same supporting cast. I think some people overvalue Cody because he's such a likeable guy, but this season Cody was truly bad. He was hurting us a lot more than he was helping us.

I could see Cody being 'serviceable' on a completely stacked team with a nasty defense that generates a lot of turnovers and a focus on the running game. I am talking one of those teams that is a NC contender without getting much from their QB; basically, where he is not going to be ever asked to win the game. Kind of like a college version of the Ravens team that won the superbowl earlier this decade.

Any situation other than that? Not going to get it done.
