How much does "Hawk Hate" have to do with his personality?

I honestly think that a lot of folks just do not like his personality. They tolerated it during the "honeymoon." But now, with the program being slow to take off, they are going off on Hawkins. But is the "hate" as much record as it is his personality? I don't think so.

I don't hate the man, I just can't stand to hear him speak. I wish he would just go away. He is not near the coach we thought we were getting.

People don't like his personality when he's losing football games. I'm sure if he was winning games, people will like him again.

face it, man the guy is an odd, odd bird (pun intended). when you are winning, it is all fine and good. but, when you aren't winning then all those eccentricities just come across as freaking weird.

i don't care about the coach's personality. i never have. if he'd deliver a winner, folks would shut up.

if he'd win enough, he could ignore the media entirely and send a dude in a ralphie costume to do his press conferences for him.

Yeah, it's totally about the losing. Hawk's a strange bird. (See what I did there? Hilarious, right?) If he's winning he's the "Zen Master" and we smile at his quirks. If he's losing, he's "Juicebox Talkins" and it's a cross between nauseating and infuriating to listen to what comes out his mouth.

Well said. It all goes back to winning.

I don't hate Hawk. I am impatient. I was very patient years 1-3. I even was in his corner after the internet scum comment, even though it teed me off.

Bottom line now is that he promised significant results this year. I don't really think he promised ten wins. I remember when that all came out, I thought 7-8 was where the Buffs would end up.

The sked had three VERY winnable games on the front end, and CU could play sub .500 ball the rest of the way and come out 7-5. That was very doable. Win another and a 8-4 season was there for the taking.

CU dropped two of the first three VERY winnable games. And they looked horrendous doing it. Now, a bowl is a longshot. Add to that the QB saga, and TH's performance and it makes Hawk look like a) he has little ability to predict whether his team is ready for the season, b) he has left himself open to serious and well founded criticism over his QB's and c) has way overpromised and under delivered.

How does he respond? Arrogance (we're doing everything right), demeaning fans and former players, defending his prior course of action and excuse-making (the "we're young") mantra.

It's easy to see why people are fed up with him. 15-28 doesn't help either....

His personality makes the losing harder to deal with. Not only are we losing, but we have a freak show running the thing. As has been mentioned, winning cures all. If he goes out and wins 5 of the next 6, his eccentric behavior and outrageous quotes won't bother anybody.

I don't care that he is goofy. For god sakes, Tressel wears a ****ing sweater vest. Lots of goofy coaches out there. What I don't like is his attitude towards the fans and the media this year. It screams of dooshyness and arrogance.

I can't speak for anyone else but I really do not care even slightly about the personality of a coach. I don't know him, I never will know him... wins are all that matter.

It's my opinion that there is a strong correlation between the personality of a coach and wins. But like you, I don't care about the personality as long as there are wins.

I care about the personality only in that I expect to hear something resembling information from time to time.

But hate is a silly word to apply to a coach. It should be reserved for low life POSs like whoever put a beautiful little 7 year old girl in the trash in Florida. I alternate between extreme anger and just wanting to cry.

i don't see myself in this group. i think he's a little over-full of himself to a fault wanting to get "love me, I'm Hawk" love and he's thankfully cut back on telling us about all the academic literature he reads on "motivation" and his personal metaphysics....but i'd go fishing with Dan. not sure i want him coaching my football team; but, he's got new life at least this week.

beat KSU and MU and i might buy back in a little.

His record stinks and he talks in circles. Why do you endear yourself to a head football coach so much? If he wins people will stop. Might help if he quit acting like he and his players are the only ones to make sacrifices in this life.

I've tuned Hawk out because his message has become monotonous. I can only hope the lockerroom and assistants don't feel the same way. Sheesh. They might have to listen to that message every day.

That doesn't mean Hawkins wouldn't make a great neighbor. I trust Hawkins to be squeaky clean and appriciate that he aspires to do things the right way. He deserves credit where credit is due.

What bugs me is this. I have only seen the pie eyed Everyman philosopher who sets lofty goals and speaks in riddles. Sometimes I wonder if he's using football as a springboard into a career in motivational speaking.

I have not seen the candid self-depricating guy who isn't afraid to admit that he is learning on the job. When does he ever point the finger at himself? I'd find him more compelling and more admirable if he spoke like the blue collar guy that he wants his players to emulate. A real blue collar guy isn't above the fans or the media and isn't disrespectful of anyone who has ever taken risks beyond college football.

Even if he manages to win the north, it's still a good idea for Hawk to hire a media consultant who can point out where he's stumbled and can help him make his message resonate better with Joe Buff.

:yeahthat:

Hawk seems like a weird guy that I'm not sure I'd want to drink a beer with. He does however seem like a good guy and I'd be perfectly accepting of him if he won some freaking football games more often than not.

:yeahthat:

:yeahthat:AGAIN!

If the guy would just not talk down to the media and fans, as well as recognize, take responsibility, and admit to what ever he has caused to go wrong with the team, then my level of respect and opinion of him would be far better than what it is now. And 5 more conferance wins this season would'nt hurt either.

I don't think he even drinks beer.....

Here we go again.

Not sure but I think I would enjoy him as a neighbor that I could drink beer with. My issue is that he has not delivered. Period. It is well beyond time for the excuses and metophysical bull****. It is time to put a winning team on the field. If he had won the games he should have this year, nobody (including myself) would even notice he was quirky. Bottom line is win in your 4th year. Nobody is expecting a MNC every year, but it is time to start winning and stop with the mouth. Put up or shut up.

Oh, and if you are losing in your 4th year, at least start taking responsibility for your ****ty coaching decisions. We will see, if he wins Saturday and knocks off Missouri, you will see more people forget about his quirkiness.

When someone has to keep telling you over and over that they are doing things right, they are obviously trying to cover up some sort of deficiencies.

What is it now, 15-28 and counting? That's just the empirical evidence and doesn't even include the rest of the nonsense.

This has nothing to do with hate. I didn't particularly engage with his personality in 2006, but on paper Hawkins looked pretty good. Montana State sent off all kinds of alarms. I tolerated everything until the first 2 games this season. There has been disingenuousness on top of more and more bizzare talk since the beginning of the season. Finally, I don't need to address another specific topic any more than saying this: "Blood is always thicker than water." Don't bother to tell me different. I will not argue this point. It is a cultural constant.

Where do we go from here? I'm looking for a winning football program. It is Colorado's history. In over 100 years of Colorado football and 23 coaches, only 2 have less than a 0.500 winning percentage among those with at least 3 years as coach. (Only 2 others have losing records with less than 3 years.)

If Hawkins has a winning football program that goes to bowl games and contends for and sometimes wins conference championships, I can be happy for the program and ignore his peculiar personality. If he continues to lose football games, I can ignore his peculiar personality, but he should be gone based on the record.

Well said 30. Of course it was, what else would I expect from a Kadet and Buff.
