will not be entrusted to the timid or the weak."

Just heard Matt McChesney on with Klatt. I have to say, he opened my eyes quite a bit. But what irked me most was when Klatt brought up the sign in the locker room with the above quote. It was put their by Bill McArtney. Joel asked Matt why the team was not living up to that quote. McChesney said, "Because that sign isn't there anymore. It's been taken down." He also said the picture of Coach McMahon, who passed away from cancer, has been taken down.

More than any other thing I've heard, this opened my eyes to what Dan Hawkins stands for. :sad2:

Um hasnt the whole locker-room been through a huge remodel?
Yeah, they did mention that. However, I think what is saddening to former players is that the tradition they tried to establish are being thrown in the trash by the new regime. McChesney was very poignant.

Yeah, that is very disturbing. Not just because of what they mean to CU tradition and history, but why take down a sign that encourages hard nosed football? I don't even want to know what Hawk put up in their place, possibly a plaque of names for hardest worker in practice player of the month or something.

Somebody better be keeping an eye on all of the trophies, pix, etc in the Dal Ward Center, or Hawkins might have them removed too.

"The pride and tradition of the Colorado Buffaloes will not be entrusted to the timid or the weak" is about to be added to my signature on every Buff site.

Rivals has a thread on this too. Taking that down really pisses me off. Doesn't surprise me since Hawk decided we needed a completely new culture at CU. It just pisses me off.

I heard about stuff like this when Hack was first hired. I know for a fact that it was things like this that made many of the older players hate him. It had nothing to do with loyalty to GB or anything else.

Hack came in and went to put his stamp on everything, trying to erase everything from previous coaches.

At the time some of the things bothered me, but with the entire "scandal" I was willing to give him a pass, knowing that so much work needed to be done to improve the image of the program.

Looking at it now, and comparing it to what Callaghan did at NU, everything is eerily similar. A girl I work will husband played for NU prior to Callaghan, she would tell me stories about player traditions being changed, and players from previous teams not feeling welcome around the athletic department.

Alienate your old players, disregard existing traditions. Didn't work for NU, not gonna work for us. NU was able to make the change, lets hope we can do the same.

I saw the Heisman Trophy sitting on a clothing rack in the Colorado National pro shop. No case or anything.

I wonder if Mac is aware of that, since he's been publicly supporting this tool. That's infuriating if true. :pissed:

It was out there all summer. It was on loan/display for all the festivities welcoming the course into the CU family.

Funny thing, the first few times I saw the trophy out there it was "wow", after about the 10 time, I was always expecting to see an arm broken, or it wearing a hat.

one point i am totally with you guys on is the Callahan/Hawkins stuff

"The pride and tradition of the Colorado Buffaloes will not be entrusted to the timid or the weak." May I add that it should also not continue to be entrusted to those who practice nepotism, or have a Napoleon complex.

What I want to know is, what does Hawks new sign say? "Let's go on out there and see what happens with the little things. Get your horns out"

Bull****! I want Hawkins fired for his piss poor record, but I distinctly recall players saying all sorts of warm & fuzzy things when Hawkins started. The strength & conditioning coach is so much better. GB was soft and the players couldn't do any reps of the clean & jerk. blah, blah, blah...

Fact is losing makes players bitter. F***, it's made me bitter, but to listen to all the talk around here it won't be long before Hawkins is blamed for the 9/11 attacks.

Fact is, Hawkins and family are decent people. He sucks a$$ as a coach and should be fired, but do you really believe that he's trying to wreck CU traditions? If anything, he's done major suck ups to both Mac and Barnett. He was extremely gracious to GB and even called him when he started at CU. He's tried to start traditions where fans greet the players and run pep rallies on Pearl.

By the way, I love Chesny. He was a beast on the Dline.

Agree.

Got me thinking about other signs that are not going to be tampered with soon. Signs that mean something to those players:

It's been a while since anybody got ND's incredible talent to play like champions.

Espn just had a thing on these, The Tennessee one is no longer the focus of a pregame ritual, Holtz started that one at ND and Pete Carroll started the ones at SC recently.

I didn't know that. Just got to thinking about what inspires people.

Actually, on this weekends game day they were showing various teams "inspirational" objects. When Holtz was hired at ND someone showed him a picture of that sign and he noted it was not there anymore. He had one made immediately and its been there every since.

To me these stories are another nail in Hawks coffin. You don't f*ck with tradition. Neu irked me when he eliminated McCartney's Red N game sign which is in the Dal Ward player meeting room. Barney brought it back. Traditions like these give a team a connection to the successful teams of the past.

Has anyone heard about the Hawkins statue? Apparently everyone on the team calls it "Coach" and it would cost $3 million to get rid of. It regularly gets sh*t on by various animals and shows no reaction.

Agree exactly 100% Great Post.

All the haters are piling on and we're inventing all kinds of evils. Fact is we don't have to "make him Callahan" to want a new direction. Hawk has done some good or Mac wouldn't have supported him at all. Hawk believes that everything he has done and does is for the good of the team, institution and fan base. If he was 6-1, we'd love this man and all those quirks.

He's not and we don't.

Great Post.
