Shamelessly lifted from rolltide.com:

Kirby Smart - Defensive Coordinator, Alabama

"Kirby Smart joined the Crimson Tide football staff in January, 2007, after spending the 2006 season as safeties coach with head coach Nick Saban and the NFL's Miami Dolphins. Prior to his stint with the Dolphins, Smart spent six years on the collegiate level with Georgia (1999 and 2005), LSU (2004), Florida State (2002-03), and Valdosta State (2000-01).

As the running backs coach at Georgia in 2005, the Bulldogs averaged 162.2 yards per game, the third best mark in the SEC. Smart spent the 2004 season as defensive backs coach under Saban at LSU, where he tutored two NFL draft picks: Corey Webster (2nd round, New York Giants) and Travis Daniels (4th round, Miami Dolphins). That season, the Tigers allowed 157.2 passing yards per game, which ranked second in the SEC and fifth nationally.

Smart was a graduate assistant coach under Bobby Bowden at Florida State in 2002-03 and served as defensive coordinator (2001) and defensive backs (2000) coach at Valdosta State. He began his coaching career as an administrative assistant at Georgia in 1999.

As a player, Smart was four-year lettermen at defensive back for the Bulldogs, where he was a First-Team All-SEC pick as a senior. He finished his career with 13 interceptions, fourth in Georgia annals, and led the Bulldogs with six interceptions in 1997 and five in 1998. A four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Smart earned his undergraduate degree in finance from Georgia and his master's degree from Florida State in 2003. A native of Bainbridge, Ga., Smart is married to the former Mary Beth Lycett of McDonough, Ga."

There are alot of good names out there. Haven't seen anyone on this board really talk about Smart. He has expertise in areas we badly need to improve if we want to be a contender in the Big XII. If we can't lure Shanny or Gruden to Boulder, I guess he'd be my next pick. Oh, and right now he's working for $360k/yr.

Meh, he's an SEC guy. He probably doesn't have what it takes to win in the Big XII.

Jeff Smart isn't related, and it'd be too late to turn the LB into a QB at this point anyway. So Kirby has that going for him.

Can't judge a book by its cover, but it is a little too close for comfort.

I think we could replace Hawkins with this guy and if it is done low-key enough, the academics who would howl about the misplaced priorities of a $3 mill buyout might not even realize we made a change.

:lol::lol:

Throw in a roofie and a bus ticket, and hell, we wouldn't have to pay the $3 million, let alone hide it.

Sounds almost Stoopsian in pedigree, except Smart grew up in SEC Football and understands what run-blocking and defensive skills really are, and no penchant for a Snyderesque JUCO short-cut route. This guy probably believes in real accomplishment and real work.

Dunno. It might work, but Smart would have to practice a flat affect 'deer in the headlights' look. As soon as he showed any emotion on the sidelines, people might wise up.

Yeah, I don't think he's out after this year, but another year like this one and I think he'd be out of there. I don't know crap about Georgia, but like any SEC school I'm sure they were pretty upset after last year. Huge expectations, #1 overall pick QB, first round RB and getting shut out by Bama. That's not say to it's justified, I think Richt is a damn good coach. Georgia wasn't doing too hot before he got there if my memory serves.

Smart is Saban's errand boy. Saban is the DC. Smart gets his samwich's real efficiently.

Isn't that what everyone said about McHoodie/Belicheat? Kubiak/Shanahan? Bo Peep/Saban?

Is he really riding coattails, or is he being humble and learning his craft from a master?

That's true I forgot Saban was a very defensive minded coach. Hiring DCs who have a HC that is basically is a DC is risky business imo. Venables with Stoops, any DC at USC under Carroll, Helfrich at Oregon under Kelly etc. It's really hard to tell how much they actually do for their respective programs.

I hear what you're saying, but I'm not sure I buy Saban as someone who'd carry dead weight around no matter how good the sammiches are. Given his previous playing and coaching experience (all-SEC DB, DC at Valdosta), and his 'smarts' (Masters in Finance) I seriously doubt Smart's title is just ceremonial. Think it's more like Saban is grooming him to fill his shoes. No doubt Saban has some influence on the gameday calls, but I'd imagine most of the nuts-and-bolts stuff is Kirby's department.

You could be right, I think it's just too hard to tell. For all I know all of the guys I listed have far bigger roles than what I gave them credit for. It's just risky business is all I'm saying.

Let's bring this guy in. He has experience at high level football on both sides of the ball. He has worked not only with defense but running backs, WRs and OL.

His experience is with some schools that go out and play sound fundamental football, no gimmicks, no trick em with our walk-ons, just block, tackle and win.

I cannot guarantee that he has what it takes to win the big XII but I can guarantee that he would not accept the embarasement that we have faced over the past four years

By the way we should also be able to afford him and he has recruited at a high level.

Now we're talking! :smile2:

He'd be a dead-nuts lock to recruit better at DB and shore up our defense. I have to think whoever he'd bring in at OC would be a run-oriented, physical offense kind of guy. Very well-rounded experience wise, and I think we can afford him.

Smart would be a decent pick up, however he hasn't had a ton of time as a coordinator at a big program, and as was stated earlier he might just be DC in name with Saban really doing the work. Also, an issue with him (and Charlie Strong for that matter) would be recruiting. Neither have ties to California or many other Western states. Hiring him might get CU one or two players a year from the Southeast, but all in all, he would have to hire assistants with excellent ties in California and other areas out West.
