Woelk's lame battle cry: Bring back MAC to be Talkins babysitter.

Why I even read this douche bag anymore is beyond me.. Guess I enjoy it for the laughs..

Talkins going to be fired? Woelk says:

Now for a dose of the real world. The bet from this corner is the same it`s been since the season began: a change isn`t in the works. The economic and political realities of the situation still point to Hawkins returning for a fifth season. Feel free to argue whether he should go or stay, but arguments won`t change the economics.

Okay, stick by your guns Woelk.. We'll See when we finish 2-10.

Goes on about coaching changes need to be made, blah, blah..

Sooner or later -- preferably sooner -- Colorado officials need to make the call to Bill McCartney.

Not as the head coach. Not as a coach who will be asked to spend countless hours on the road recruiting and away from his family.

Simply, as a coach who will provide daily guidance to Hawkins and his staff. A coach who knows more than anyone what it takes to win at a university where the landscape and circumstances are different than almost any other Division I school. A hands-on guy who knows how the administration works -- and has an idea about how to work the administration.

Mac is going to be Talkins babysitter..

why would Mac want to be involved with some loser like Talkins? You know Woelk, get a frickin clue idot.

Even Buffwings will tell you that success of complex organizations are dependent on unity of command.

This plan undermines the head coach's authority and muddies the roles of accountability.

What can Mac do if he isn't the HMFPKIC? Seriously? If Neill feels that the Head Coach isn't up to the task, than the solution is replacement. This plan in no way shores up the staff.

Woelk is a damn fool. He does his job about as well as Talkins does his.. Pathetic moron. He's the only one that isn't looking into reality.. This program is in FREEFALL because Talkins is the coach..

And his solution is to make Mac be Talkins babysitter, juicebox, chaperone or whatever, its frickin pathetic.

The truth is political and economic realities don't always move in sync. While politically it may look bad to buy out Hawkins, the economic reality that results from keeping him may be disastrous.

Sitting in Folsom and watching your team get it's ass kicked by an unranked opponent is not fun, and people are not going to just blindly pay seat licenses and purchase season tickets to watch a ****ty product if they don't believe the prospect of improvement is there. If the people that sit around me are a valid working sample of the mood throughout the stadium, I think they are seriously going to see the season ticket base deteriorate if they retain Hawkins.

The academics that run this institution are going to have to make a call; Are they going to buy out Hawk's contract, and deal with the firestorm of media hacks and grandstanding politicians who will predictably condemn the move? Or are they going to listen to those who actually support the school financially? If history is an indicator (exhibit A, Betsy Hoffman and Co), Woelk is probably correct, and they will lack the fortitude to stand up to the former.

I often agree with Woelk but not on this one. The similarities of NU and KSU that he used neglected to point out that both involved a coaching change, not a "mentor". The jury is still out on Osborne hiring Pelini and KSU just brought back their former coach. His comparisons are way off base on this one.

I don't know exactly what Colorado's season ticket base is - but I don't think ticket sales have historically driven the Colorado football machine.

That is why CU has been forced to schedule football games that the major networks will pick up and pay heavily to broadcast.

Good point. I was still so disgusted with yesterday that I failed to look far enough to see that coaching changes were involved at NU and KSU.

The mere suggestion of Mac coming back put some temporary blinders on me.

Thanks for spoiling my Sunday morning full of false hope and pretense...

Going sinker...

Grasping at straws.

And I think Woelk knew it.

He started from the premise that Hawkins would be back next year. That doesn't leave a lot of options.

Option 1 is that you leave Hawkins alone with his staff like we have for the past 4 years. Under this option, you're just hoping that despite all evidence to the contrary that this staff will have things "pop" for it next year. Hawkins may make a staff change or 2 on his own, but his history suggests that he doesn't like shaking up his staffs. So this option only makes sense if you think that they are, indeed, doing things right and know how to do this thing.

Option 2 is that you require Hawkins to bring in new staff. But this is difficult for a couple reasons. First, as Woelk pointed out, if you bring in a strong coordinator and/or Assistant Head Coach then you've undermined Hawkins and created staff politics issues by essentially putting the Head Coach In Waiting on the staff. Besides, I'm not sure we could get a guy like that because he would probably say, "Just make me the head coach now or call me next year when you're ready." Second, you run into the issue of what caliber of assistant coach you can attract to Boulder under these circumstances. How many great coaches are going to be willing to leave their current job security and choose to work under a lame duck coach and with a 1-year contract?

Option 3, which is to bring back the legend who has no aspirations for a full-time coaching job, is what is left. Putting McCartney on staff isn't too bad with the politics since he has a relationship with Hawkins and 3 of the assistants worked or played for him. He's also got a great relationship with boosters and fans. Finally, he certainly does know how to do this thing. All of that Woelk laid out. But the negatives of this move, which he didn't include to make it a balanced article, far outweigh the positives. Would Hawkins really be the guy in charge? Would McCartney have any actual authority to do anything? Frankly, Woelk has no understanding of organizations and leadership or he wouldn't have even suggested this. Someone with a clear vision needs to be in charge and there needs to be a clear chain of command. And one of Hawkins biggest failings as a leader so far is that his coordinators haven't been in a position where the offensive and defensive staffs clearly worked for them. Instead, it's been management by committee for gameplans and personnel groups. Now, Woelk is suggesting that management by committee at the top of the program is the solution. It's a typical Boulder hippie dream that, in practice, is a nightmare.

In my opinion, Options 2 and 3 are completely untenable. That leaves Option 1 or "Fire Hawkins" as the only reasonable positions. So if we really can't fire Hawkins due to the political and economic climate, the best thing to do is really to have administrators stay out of his way and let him sink or swim by doing things his way.

That would lead us down the path that the losing product on the field doesn't diminish the network's appetite to keep broadcasting CU games on TV.

Great idea.. is this guy somehow related to Woody Paige? Let's hire Bill as assistant HC #1 and get Dave Logan in here as assistant HC #2. Hawk can be the media relations guy, giving interviews during the game. Mac can do what a HC actually does inspring the team and yelling at people when appropriate. Logan can make all of the in game decisions, like when to fake punt from your own end zone.

Better yet, if Mac loves the school, then fire Hawk and get Mac to coach for a tiny slary until Hawks deal is done and paid for. If Mac does not need the money, maybe he will do it for love. Then reward him with good money in the future. He would get the assistants and turn this around quick. I think we have some good kids, and nobody is dominant in the B12N. He could win it next year-- we all know CU would go bowling with Mac at the helm.

Next season, Mac's going to be a 70 year old guy who hasn't coached football in 16 years and isn't willing to put in the hours he did when he was successful. It would be a disaster. Better to hire Embree to get the Mac coaching tree and philosophies back to Boulder under a true Head Coach.

Back in the day he sat in the same media press box area as I did. A lot of important people wandered through there to get to the most excellent roast beef carving station they had. Along the way most reporters rubbed elbows with people, either in line or on the elevator, that could or would say a little bit of off the record about whats really going on. The talk about money is probably not very far from being official.

i like NW and usually enjoy/agree with his opinions but that was one poor, poor article/op-ed. wow.

I used to like his articles alot more but it seems that he's becoming more of an apologist for the athletic department and less of writing what he really thinks. After a very good and candid article last Sunday, he seems to have swung back the other way with today's poor column. :sad2:

Come on Neil, there's only one proper solution here.
