QBs...

Cincinnati: Backup quarterback Zach Collaros tossed four touchdown passes while subbing for injured starter Tony Pike to lead the Bearcats to a 28-7 win at Syracuse as Cincinnati ran its record to 8-0. The program is one win away from its best start in school history. The Bearcats are the only team in the nation not to lose a fumble.

Can you tell me how a team like Cincy not only has one great QB but looks to have a really good backup as well and CU can't find or develop one QB in the last 4 years....who is our QB coach anyway? PATHETIC!

Well, BK AND STAFF, hopefully. Of course, Cincy's hardly got any good reputation over time, like Boise-Hawk & Co had.

It's interesting that Hawk didn't get more of his staff to join him. I've wondered about the dynamics of the staff that stayed behind. "I have a chance for Big 12 TV exposure, Big 12 money, Big 12 facilities. And Hawk. Or I can stay at Overlooked-Dismissed-Boise State and it's budget, and work with Peterson. Hmmm..."

Some may have figured it was a toss-up. "Family has friends here, rather not uproot the kids..." That's a good reason. Maybe the best.

Some may not have been invited - maybe Hawk knew they were pathetic worthless coaches and this was his chance to load his staff with top-notch skill-development coaches. Yeah, well...

How much of it came down to "Who do I want to work with in the future"?

I think Peterson probably knew he was going to get the head coaching gig at Boise State when Hawk took the job here at CU. I think much of Hawk's success at Boise State had to do with the staff he had there. Look at how well they're doing compared to what Hawk has been able to do here. In the past 4 years they have played in more meaningful games than we have. We may be in a bigger and better conference but our coaching staff right now probably is ranked at the bottom or near the bottom of the big 12. We've got quality recruits to come in and our recruiting classes have been ranked higher than boise states but it seems that our coaching staff right now doesn't have a clue on how to coach the talent that we have here to play up to their abilities and the coaches at boise state have been able to get as much out of their players as possible.

One must wonder how well Hawk Jr and Boise State would be if he would have choosen to go with them on signing day.

Yeah I noticed that too. I guess it doesn't hurt that Kelly has an offensive identity and can recruit for it. He also is a spread specialist, while our coaches specialize in absolutely nothing.

So, running up 28 points on Syracuse with a backup is a big deal? Hell, we hung 24 on Wyoming with a guy who's carrying a clipboard now.

I take it you haven't watched Cincy play at all? The kid is a playmaker and a half. Syracuse is a lot better than Wyoming too, I doubt we could go to their place and win, let alone get 28 points out of our offense.

I really think Hansen can be adequate if our OL can be even average.

If your OL sucks, your team sucks.

So you're saying you would take CHawk or Hansen over either of their guys? Give me a break...CHawk has gotten worse in his years here and Hansen looks like a deer in the headlights half the time even though he was supposed to have been coached the last year and a half.
Both our QBs arent great but I think they would be a hell of a lot better if they had competent coaching...

CanB, I shouldn't have brought up the AND OTHER STAFF so early without first pointing out your owell-argued point.

We've seen some pretty good 2nd-String-QB performances from other programs. Cincy's was solid, I thought. I've thought OU's Landry Jones is pretty great, too.

And if you'd said, "I'll take Iowa State and their 2nd String QB and I'll give you 8 Neb turnovers in Lincoln", I'd have still bet the farm on Neb winning that game. Some 2nd String QBs are ready, some aren't. Some have good coaches that develop them, some programs won't.

I can easily understand Hansen's lack of prep-time for the Texas game. He can easily justify, "Yeah yeah, I was jerked around last year and lost my red-shirt, only to be benched anyway... why bother REALLY trying each week?" That is a reasonable attitude that was foisted on him by his coaching staff.

I'm continually watching his receivers during Hansen's scrambles, though. THOSE guys need to work and do come-back routes, or get into his field of vision. Most of them start trotting, stopping, hanging out with the DBs - "Wanna split a hot-dog?"

All I've seen is Hansen do throw-aways out of bounds. He's never had repeat throws to a racing receiver doing a comeback route. That's a receiver's responsibility to learn from his coaches. gulp.

NOW I know the problem-!

I've caught a couple of Cincy's games. Didn't Northwestern score like 37 points on Syracuse at home? I'd say any Big XII team would be a pretty good bet to hang 4 TD's on them.

My capacity for Hawk Love died about halftime of the CSU game. I do think that making a fuss over scoring 28 points against SU is a little over the top. If they'd done that against UT or Bama, I'd get excited. As it is, Maine scored 4 less points on Syracuse at home than Cincy did.

You're missing the point of the post. It isn't about whether or not Syracuse is a good team, it's how Cincy lost their starting QB and hasn't missed a beat. Take a look at Oklahoma if you want to see how most teams respond to that.

What I'm pissed about is how Kelly can bring in not one, but two QBs that seemingly are worlds better than what we have. I'm sure they also have good WRs and an OL that knows how to block, but it is what it is. At this point I watch just about any team from a BCS conference and wish we had that kind of QB play, OL play, speed at skill positions, defensive tenacity.

We've developed a great back up Qb...the problem is that he's been the starter getting all the reps and game experience for the last 3 years.

How does anyone know if the frosh qb's on the roster can't get it done? Maybe we have the qb's here already they just don't get the chance.

It happens everywhere at every level. Someone indispensible goes down and in steps an upgrade.

That's true and nobody really does know for sure who can and can't play. With the WR and OL play this year, I doubt Joe Montana would look overly good standing back there.

Yes, OU, TT, MU, have had problems winning with replacement QB's after injury/graduation. That's one of the big problems with an offense that is so QB dependent. Guess what I'm trying to say is that it might have been the same story at Cincy if they didn't play in a 2nd-tier conference. There's more room for error when you're not playing a legit top 25 team every-other week. Does that make sense?

I see what you're saying, I'm just trying to convey that it hurts to see a school like Cincy, not exactly known for their football, to have not one but two pretty good QBs. I also disagree with them playing in a weak league, Cincy is really good, WVU is pretty good, USF is pretty good, and Pitt is really good. They may not have a Texas at the top, but I'd take that list of teams over the next tier of Big 12 teams.

I totally get the part about being frustrated about the QB situation. We couldn't even get decent pro-style QB's in here when Skippy took the reins from Mac. Don't know why that is. It's just always been that way. I wouldn't rush to judge Hansen. A decent coach could make a legit BCS QB out of him, IMHO.

As for the Big Least... Cincy is pretty good. Not Top 10 good, but probably somewhere in the 15-20 range. Pitt is somewhere on the fringe of the top 25. USF and WV are comparable to maybe Mizzou or Kansas. They'd struggle pretty hard to post .500 conference records if they played in the Big XII or SEC. Just my opinion, of course, but it's fun to talk about.

Agreed on Hansen, OL put up some blocks and get him some good WRs and he'd be a solid QB.

I just can't agree on the Big East with you, but who honestly knows? We'll find out come bowl time. I just think WVU and USF would plow over KU and MU pretty hard. I'd take Cincy over anyone not named Texas this year too. But hey, that's just me.
