Simmons said the explanation he’s heard for his lack of playing time has been, “I qualified late, so they don’t want me to get out there and make mistakes. That’s really what the case is.”

“You win with achievers and lose with potential,” the coach said. “You have to get guys to the point where they can do something well consistently and build from there. When that happens, you have something going. When you start trying to jump that train track, you’re in trouble, because you’re going to water down everything else.”

:wtf: Hell yes I'm wearing a powder blue shirt tomorrow..... sheesh

Just as most of us suspected. I will wear powder blue to my kids' soccer games in Plano....

You have got to be kidding me!!!!! "They don't want me to make mistakes?" How can you possibly expect a kid to learn and get better if you don't allow them to make mistakes every once in a while?

I went to the Navy Ball down here last night and as ADM Stavridis, Commander of European Command, said to the UT Midshipmen in giving advice to them on how to succeed in their future Naval careers he said..."Never be afraid to fail."

Hey Hawk, I guaran-damn-tee you that while ADM Stavridis may not have been in the "stressful" arena of being a college football coach, he is one who has taken the risks you hold so close, and has PROVEN himself to be a true LEADER of men!

That's it, I've lost all respect for Hawk as a leader....he has no ****ing clue what it is to be a leader and mentor of men. Afraid Simmons will make a mistake? Please....HOW THE **** ELSE HE SUPPOSED TO LEARN, DAN?!?!?!

Going Sinker...

If it is true then Hawk is a hypocrite. When he first came to CU he spewed a lot of talk about getting guys away from playing football from the mindset of trying to not makes mistakes into the mindset of just playing the game and having fun.

To me, though, this sounds like the BS excuse they gave Simmons as to why he's not playing. I bet there's something deeper. Maybe it's justified, maybe it's not.

Simmons has looked great on the 2 plays that he was in on this year. It's got to be tough for the kid, after going through the qualifying issue, to having to stand on the sideline this season. Too bad for a guy with good size and foot-speed that not everyone can be on Hawk's ACHIEVERS list.

I believe that Hawkins and his staff put together overly-complex gameplans. They then overprepare the team to the point where most of the players are unable to have things down and play loose... and those that are able to absorb and process all that material are not necessarily our best athletes.

It's like what happened on Missouri's fake FG last week. Riddle prepared the unit for that very play. Actually spent practice time defensing it. In the game, coaches saw the formation and were yelling that it was coming. Result: a 30+ yard run by Mizzou, untouched for a touchdown. Sounds like they were so overprepared by Riddle that they didn't grasp anything.

We are losing to teams that are less talented than us because we've got a small program mentality at the top. There's a belief that we will win by outsmarting opponents through execution of a masterful gameplan. Fact is, we're CU. Other than matchups with about 30 programs we should be winning through superior athleticism and swagger/toughness (and it's a coin flip with 2/3 of those). But this staff tries to beat the CSU's of the world with scheme.

If you play guys that aren't properly prepared, they will more than likely make a play that will cause the band to play. It won't be a good play and it will be the other team's band playing.

Some of these guys that sign and then feel entitlement amaze me.

Like the one where the punt hit 5 yards in fornt of him and bounced over his head? JK, kind of. He'll be good next year.

The point is, hawk braggged and bragged about simmons and couldn't wait to get him here so he could help the wr unit. Now this BS excuse?

This is why many want him gone. It';s never going to change with his excuses and mind-numbing logic on all football matters.

By the time you grasp this offense, grasshopper, it will be time for you to go.

wtf..hawky doesnt want him to make a mistake? what a fraud of a coach he is...i bet hawky doesnt like to play talented players cause he never sniffed the field when he played and hes still pissed.....looks like ray polk is a smart young man why go back to rb hell he knows he would never play there.....

If this is true, they should have redshirted him.

I get so pissed off when a player plays only a handful of plays during a season he could have redshirted.

Absolutely. The thing is, I can see what Hawkins is talking about and making sure a guy is ready to play to minimize mistakes. But it does not explain why Simmons was not getting into games that were already over (Toledo, Wyoming, etc.) to get playing time. That is where the staff really screwed up. We could be looking at Simmons being ready to play more when we really need him, instead he is still very inexperienced at this level and our options at WR are limited. Just brilliant.

The other thing with guys like Simmons is that we missed the boat on working him in through stages as he learned the playbook. Like Boulder Buff said, there were some games that were out of hand the first half of the season (Toledo, Wyoming, West Virginia, Texas). Plenty of opportunity to get guys like Simmons more reps.

But what really bothered me is that we didn't see a reverse for him until last week. Since he's our only wide receiver with homerun speed, why didn't we see some designed plays for him from the beginning? A bubble screen, a reverse, a "go" route, etc. Punt and/or kickoff returns to get him in the flow of the game and build confidence. There were ways to get the ball in his hands from day one but we didn't take advantage of the opportunity.

2 plays where he touches and both are first downs. Yeah, he isn't ready for Big 12 ball.

Bull****.

I was the one saying we were expecting too much of him considering how late he was getting here...having said that, we definitely could get him MUCH more reps than he's been receiving. Another Hawkins screwup.
