That CU has contacted Univerity of Utah's Kyle Whittingham about replacing Dan Hawkins. Thoughts?

**** yes. Me likey. From the Urban Meyer Coaching tree... definitely knows defense and what a good offense should look like. Wonder who would be his OC? could do very well here. Can't believe he would be interested.

I doubt CU would have contacted him. Maybe a search firm did. But that's usually kept extremely quiet.

Assuming that he's on the short list, I'm not so sure it's an upgrade. We've already got a head coach that has no BCS conference background (even as an assistant) who enjoyed a ton of success as a non-BCS head coach.

If it came to that, I'd actually rather stay the course with Hawkins and avoid the turmoil of a regime change.

BTW, I'll say the same about Patterson at TCU. Would love to have him and he'd have to be crazy to leave TCU for CU.

Why not? Just because we suck now doesn't mean we will forever. We're in very much the same spot OU was in in 1998 when they hired Stoops. CU has a lot going for it, let's not forget that.

Knows how to win, gets teams up for big games, recruits a lot of the areas we are already strong in.

I'm okay with that idea although I don't know that he would come in.

Utah has a lot going for it, too. Other than getting into a BCS conference, there isn't a lot of upside going from Utah to CU right now.

Interesting. But why leave Utah? They have been to BCS bowls more recently and pretty much own the MWC along with TCU. CU is in a BCS conference, but can only be viewed as a rebuilding job. A rebuilding job started 4 years ago, but with not much in the way of on the field results. If he keeps winning, I'd bet more attractive options come his way. JMO.

My thoughts exactly. Why would he want to leave Utah to come here?

IF he would, conference. Moutain West to Big 12. You have to remember these guys dont neccesarily look at things objectively. Objectively, a lateral move or step down. But, CU is in the Big 12, is one of the winningest programs of all time, and is located in Boulder.Ego says I can turn it around there and be set. As for location, judging by his career path thus far, he enjoys the mountains. BYU---Utah---CU????

There is enough talent here for him to see how he could win... but I dunno, to quote a post from BB in the Jordan Wynn thread, Utah Football>>>>>>>>Cu football right now

I disagree. Outside of us fans, we're NOWHERE near the job that OU is. OU football is life in Oklahoma. We rock 50,000 when we're good....pay bottom of the league, 1 year assistant contracts, aging facilities and little financial support, etc.
Im not a glass half empty guy, CU has a **** ton going for it, too. But, I dont think we can be in the same breath in terms of job quality as OU.

Utah is to BYU as CSU is to CU. It's second fiddle in Utah, even when they are doing well. And make no mistake, they've been doing VERY well lately.

I just don't think we should be selling ourselves so short. CU is a top tier school in a good area to recruit with a major media market. We all think we deserve better than what we're getting, but then say "oh, he'd never want to come here". Why the hell not? How many national championships does Utah have? How many Heisman Trophy winners?

At the time that OU hired Stoops, they were getting around 55,000+/- into Owen field to watch the Schooners play. We're in a very similar situation to what they were in at that time. I won't argue about history and tradition, which they have us beat on. But in terms of where the program is today, it's a lot like where OU was in 1998. If we get the right guy in here, it won't take us long to have the same kind of facilities as OU has. It's all about getting the right guy.

:yeahthat: I would prefer to move in a direction other than a spread offense, but I wouldn't jump off a building if they hire Whittingham.
he's a defensive guy, even if he did follow Urban Meyer.. not sure what O he would bring.

Unfortunately just one less of each.

Could be a good year to go after him. If they win out (big if, with TCU and BYU still on the schedule), then they still don't go to a BCS game. they would be 11-1 and going to a non-bcs game most likely. If he were to go 11-1 at CU there would be chance he would be in the national championship game, and he would defiantly be in a BCS game.
That might piss him off a little.

Are you this schizophrenic in real life, too? You're all over the map regarding Hawkins.

There's a big difference between zero and one, my good man.

but they also have 2 BCS wins in the last 5 years. i think it would be a good to very good hire for us. drawbacks....doesn't bring a recruiting hotbed with him like Patterson, Sumlin or Charlie Strong might and kinda samo samo recruiting with and against MWC and middle of the pack Pac teams and same geography/low population density.

i might like to see new blood in that regard.

depends how the coaching carousel plays out and how the jobs slot in terms of prestige etc. if we are going to make a move, there's much advantage in making it early.

LOL.

I have been, for sure. At this point I just want to wait to see how the season plays out. Things can change in a hurry, though. I'll probably go off the deep end if Iowa State blows us out.

But on Whittingham as a candidate, if we replace Hawkins I want a guy that's coached in the big tent. I've been consistent on that.
