Hawkins Contract and Buyout

Attached are Hawkins contract and his estimated buy-out assuming he's fired on 12/31.

The total for 7/1/2009 to 6/30/2010 is prorated at 50% assuming he's been paid for the half of the year prior to him being fired.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2009-coaches-contracts-database.htm

I figure that his buyout is $3,425,337.50 based on the contract language on page 5.

He's entitled to the remainder of his base salary, supplemental salary for radio, tv and public appearances and supplemental income from sponsorship support.

Edit, the pdf of the contract is 1.2MB.. too big to attach, so the link will have to do.

You might as well double that figure for the Athletic Department if you really want to get a new coach and staff in here.

In addition to the buyout there is pay to assistants let go. Relocating of the entire new staff. New marketing and branding replacing what has been done or is scheduled to be done by Hawk.

I am sure all the rumors about search committees and replacement discussions are probably true. Plus the athletic department probably has done the math and has an exact number it will take. If the AD has not done the above, then that is poor business planning.

Rest assured it is much more than 3 million.

That's why I 'spect we'll see some new assistants in Hawkin's fifth year.

You know, if you really read it, the old contract was limited to $850k per year buyout. So not only did the extension NOT decrease the buyout, it actually guaranteed his FULL salary for the remaining term and increased the buyout by $200k per year

I think CU's portion of the HC's salary is around $185,000. The rest comes from camps, appparel contracts, TV, etc. As for the assistants, we'd only pay them one or two months salary because their Contracts expire after the year anyway. That is why we lose so many assistants.

That's where Bohn's ****ty negotiating skillz come into play...

DBT is right on the assistants, not sure how the camp etc stuff would be affected in the buyout unless specifically stated.

If they fire him this year, I hope they don't wait till 12/31. Right after the season should be the latest he should get the hook to get a coach in and try and save recruiting as much as he can this year.

Dude you guys kill me on the ****ty negotiating thing we had jsut come of a big national TV win over WVU and looked to be very much heading in the right direction, Hawk had far more leverage during this negotiation process than any of you seem to recall and was in a position to extract a better deal from the AD than the one he'd previously been on.

dunno man, then Bohn shouldn't have been so damn fire eager to get the thing done and waited till the season played out. Still ****ty negotiating. Time is a factor to use just like any other.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The extension was not the problem. Allowing a buyout like that was the problem because it put the Buffs back in the exact same place they were in when they had to fire Barnett.

In this rare occurrence (even rarer then me and Junc agreeing), I agree with Rino.

what if hawks agent wouldnt budge?

We'd just come off a bowl game, a huge recruiting year, started the season 3-0. I don't disagree that in hind sight it was a bad deal and that the program has flat sucked since the extension was signed but at the time it was tough to fault.

I will say it again. then wait. what was the ****ing hurry in the first place?

Woelk wrote an editorial shortly before the extension discussing how it would be difficult to keep Hawk around with all of the big programs sniffing around for our sure-to-be successful coach with a proven track record. Woelk was heavily advocating the extension.

I was certainly on board. Coach Hawkins appeared to be making all of the right moves.

Then you say you'll talk at the end of the season and roll the dice that he'll stick around. You can't make someone stay if they don't want to stay...

I know this is hindsight, but it's also not the only high-profile case of Bohn getting outclassed at the negotiating table. The CSU extension is another case of him giving away the farm and getting nothing in return.

Problem is if hawk is back next year, what makes you think any of his assistants will be gone? Johnson and riddell should be gone but hawk loves these guys.If bohn is in charge than he needs to tell hawk get rid of these two or no 5th year.

Come on. It's not like they gave him a contract to be the highest paid coach in the Big XII or even a level commensurate with his peers. What is he 10 out of 12? The extension was to add stability to the situation to help recruiting and retention of assistants. If a big time program wanted him, they would have to pay the buyout.

At the time, we landed ourselves a coach with a winning track record that looked to have the program going in the right direction for a very modest price.

You are incorrect. The contract was negotiated in June of 2008 - it was only signed in Sept. of 2008. The negotiation had little to do with the WVU game.

Bohn was too anxious IMO to renegotiate a contract with Hawkins...the whole thing had a lot more to do with the 2008 recruiting class (D. Scott) than it did with anything on the field.

bohn didn't need to give him an extension to stay. that extension gave hawkins all the leverage. look at the buyout if hawkins chooses to go to another school, it's almost non-existent. so how does the extension help us? bohn royally screwed up and it's pissing me off that instead of admitting this, he just keeps acting like the fans are idiots for wanting hawkins to be fired because of that huge buyout that bohn agreed to in the first place.

Of course, Hawkins still had 2.5 years left on his contract at that point in time. There was no reason to give him any extension at that time.

It was the same reason Goodman was given a scholarship after one kick.
Caught up in the moment, I believe.

If Hawkins follows his protege kicker's lead, it will make sense. After a rocky season last year, Goodman followed with a few blips, then solid performance for the last few games.

Maybe Hawkins will take a page from that book.

Mebbe.

i dunno. i think it is pretty easy to second guess the decision at this point but it wasn't as clear-cut back then.

for one thing, the legacy of Mac still hangs over the program and you can bet that marolt giving HIM an extension at an uncertain point of his rebuilding effort was a factor in this case too.

also, there is the whole negative recruiting thing--- if a coach only has a few years left, other programs will use it against you. this would also be a compelling reason to not make hawkins into a lame duck coach next year in his last contract year.

i would have probably pushed for a lower buyout amount but i am also sure that CU was well-represented in these negotiations. it isn't like the CUAD didn't think about the possibility of having to terminate early. you know that it was part of the equation.

really, it all comes down to leverage or perceived leverage at the time. ...just like barnett went from having a contract offer on the table from bohn when the team was 7-2 and ranked to him getting his ass fired a few weeks later after waiting in the belief that he would have better leverage by the end of the season.

**** happens.

i am not going to second-guess the contract negotations. i wasn't there and i don't know how they went.

the key is to not **** it up twice by deciding to stay locked into a business relationship that isn't working.

And the university shouldn't be signing contracts to pay those funds if they don't already have the funds to get out of them. That is the whole point of TABOR and all those laws we think are BS for different reasons (like the 1 year contracts for all but 6 contract employees per campus). If they didn't have the money set aside and the guts to bite the bullet and spend it on a buyout (if things went bad) then they shouldn't have approved the contract.

Just like when you sign a loan on a car. It doesn't matter if the car ends up being a piece of ****, or you don't make as much money next year, that car payment is still due. If you signed yourself up for that commitment without the means to get yourself out of it you gambled and lost and are a fool that should learn a lesson next time. The only difference is that this is a public school, and they have to be even more conservative with their funds.

Can we can file for some stimulus or TARP funds due to "reduced market value" of our head coach from the time we signed this "mortgage" to now?
