FootballCoachScoop.com: Bohn is very interested in OU's DC Brent Venables

I wouldn't. Word is that Stoops has become involved in calling the d-plays again this year, starting with the tejass game. Their D looked a lot better against the whorns. I'm not sold on their dc as a future hc.

Sounds like a trial balloon to me. I think there are better candidates out there.

We know Brian Kelly is all but assured to replace Charlie Wiess...

That leaves me with:
StrongCharlie08Tenn01casey.jpg

as our best case scenario

This is a hard one, he has BIG 12 ties and from what I understand is a solid recruiter. He seems to coach with passion and fire on the sidelines. He would be on the list, but at the top???? not sure....any OU guys out there that can give some insight??

His defenses are always solid. He coaches with tremendous passion, but doesn't go over the top. He has a TON of recruiting ties in Texas.

the OU tree is kind of hit or miss. for every Mangino or Leach (really, Snyder and Hal Mumme respectively imo) there's the Chuck Long era at SDSU.

that said, i think Venables is OK.

Do NOT hire a defensive coordinator who really is the "assistant DC". Stoops is the man on defense at Oklahoma. Peterson was the offensive genius at Boise.

BV should not be a candidate - period.

Not only is he no Mike Stoops, but Mike Stoops wasn't Mike Stoops. He was Bob Stoop's Go-Fer, just like Brent is.

Plus, Hawk is staying.

I think he'd be good too, but Charlie Strong is not coming here.

Why not? There's not going to be a good SEC opening for at least another year and Florida is the best they'll be for a few years (defense especially) I think his stock is at its highest, there's no better time to take over a BCS school with legit history and pedigree.

It's not SEC (which I think Florida would not want), but either Louisville or Virginia job seems like very probable places for Strong.

I think he will stay near his recruiting ties in the southeast.

First, he strikes me as a SE kind of guy. Word is he wants big $$$1.5-2MM a year, a perennial top 30 team and a BCS conference. Rumor of course, but CS is picking his shot carefully, and UM is working the phones to see him land in the ACC, perhaps the Big East. I could be wrong, but I doubt you'll see CS anywhere west of ACC,SEC,Big East country.

CU was, until recently, a perennial top 30 team. Not many of those kinds of schools are going to be looking for a new coach. The ones that are will do so because their coach left for the NFL or retired and there's a replacement already lined up. In other words, he's not going to FSU or Texas.

The $1.5MM isn't a big deal to me. That's middle of the road for Big 12 coaches. We should be able to do that.

We did that for Barney. I think Charlie is a big enough name the boosters would shell out for him.

This guy played at KSU, coached under Bill Snyder and coached under Bob Stoops. He has experience coaching in BCS games, Big XII Championships and the National Title.

Even in their losses this year (Miami, BYU, Texas, Nebraska), the defense was very stout. And he coaches with passion on the sideline! That is something we haven't seen under Hawkins.

This is a guy I'd put very high on a list of candidates.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to see what CS could do...I'm just not convinced he's coming out west.

How reputable is FootballCoachScoop?

Not that I don't believe the search team wouldn't take a hard look at Venables (he's a natural person of interest). I just don't know how often that site's scoop is accurate.

Memphis:
Our sources tell us that Terry Bowden (Head Coach at North Alabama), Phillip Fulmer (Former Head Coach at Tennessee), Gus Malzahn (Offensive
Coordinator at Auburn), Jim McElwain (Offensive Coordinator at Alabama), Rick Stockstill (Head Coach at Middle Tennessee State), Butch Jones (Head
Coach at Central Michigan) Tommy Tuberville (Former Head Coach at Auburn), Larry Porter (Former Memphis Running Back/LSU Assistant) and Charlie
Strong (Defensive Coordinator at Florida) are on the short list and the next Head Coach will come from this short list of coaches.

I would think Memphis would only be an attractive job for Stockstill or Porter.
Those other guys would probably hold out for BCS schools.

To me the best thing about Bohn and Venebles is that the 'chatter' has begun.
The train has just left the station. Lets see where it goes..... chooo choo..

Down 6, one out in the bottom of the ninth. With the pitcher's spot on deck and no pinch hitters left.

Just as I read this, I heard "Taps" playing in the background as some of my staff prepares to go render funeral honors...

Going Sinker...

I don't know much about Venables, but this is the thing that worries me about him. If the HC is the "mastermind" of one side of the ball like Stoops is, then that OC/DC is suspect IMO. Same reason I'd be hesitant if we went after USC's DC, or Florida's OC, or Michigan's OC.

But, the positives that Venables does have is knowledge of being with a winning program in a big conference. Knowledge of the Big 12. Knowledge of recruiting Texas. And at least some knowledge of Colorado.

Exactly. If we're going after a coordinator, I want one who has sole responsibility for that side of the ball. I want a strong DC who works under an offensive-minded HC, or vice-versa.

Not sure that it will, but if the Georgia job were to become available, that would seem to be a pretty good fit for CS.
