Below is an article about the Tennessee players that were arrested....

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4652109

HOWEVER, I just watched an interview with the VICTIM.... and he said that the players should NOT be suspended, and they should play.... :wow:

You just can't compete with that type of beliefs!

I think the #1 reason always has been, and always will be the lack of a strong local talent base. Without that, no team can remain competitive forever.

Look at the rosters for teams like Texas, Florida or USC. Note how many players are from out of state. The answer is not many...

Oklahoma never seems to have much of a problem with it. *ebraska did fine for many years without it. Alabama has fewer people than Colorado. Louisiana the same deal.

If local talent were all that was imporatant, Rutgers would be kicking everybodys ass. Located smack dab in between two of the largest cities in the US.

When cu can put together a couple good years back to back that will change everything. Mac had no problem once he got rolling. Having a system in place would help also and an administration that supports a winning program and understands that a successful football program is a benefit to the university and all other sports.

Recruiting wise, less hard working walk-ons and more athletes from texas. We have a couple from louisiana and that's good but we have to start getting the most of of our talent and we have to have these 4 and 5 star guys start panning out.

Also helps when the crime occurs in the parking lot of a convenience store where the chain is owned by a HUUUUUGE donor to the program.

And besides, the weapon was only a pellet gun, surely some leniency should be given for that!

Going Sinker....

Oklahoma is basically Texas, and Louisiana is loaded with talent

I don't remember the exact quote, but Trev Alberts once said that the belief that the North couldn't compete with the South because of recruiting advantages etc. was a complete copout. I totally agree. Just 10 years ago this conference was in the midst of total northern domination that had been going on itself for an entire decade. I know it was Big 8 before 96 but Colorado alone was beating up regularly on all of the soon to be South teams regularly during that span.

Bottom line is get the right coach here and watch the program take off.

That would be reason #2.

The belief that these players are above everything... including the law.... would be #1

friend of a friend was a swimmer at UT years ago and said that his student athlete ID was a get out of jail free card with the local cops

I tend to agree, but the magnitude and disparity in dollars has multiplied since then. When we were destroying Texas in the '90s, they weren't raking in $120M/yr (or the equivalent in back then dollars).

All of the Big 12 states are pretty mediocre, except for Texas. OU has traditionally recruited many Texas players.

Last I checked Tennessee isn't in a recruiting hotbed of talent. Sure there is Memphis and Nashville, but with only 6.2M people in the state Tennessee recruits a lot in the Carolinas, Florida and all throughout the south and even nationally. What Tennessee does have, however, are big time boosters and amazing fan support. There is a lot of money in the South and there are yachts that tailgate on the river just before the game. We are talking about a river full of 40+ foot yachts. It's unreal. They fill up a stadium for a bad team at $80+ a pop that holds over 100k.

The top 3 things to run a successful program:
1. Admin support (academic exceptions, if necessary)
2. Fan support (boosters and selling out)

3. Local talent

There are other things are a factor too like campus lifestyle, cost of living, academics, TV exposure, etc... but some of these kids wouldn't be in college except for the fact that they play football (or bball) incredibly well. Good for them though and I hope every single one graduates and lives a successful life and has opportunities presented to them that they wouldn't otherwise get because they run faster than the next guy, can jump higher or are stronger/taller than their peers.

When the coach at Memphis was fired he said he wanted the admin to provide the support it needs to be competitive in their conference.

When Mac was at CU he had the full support of admin. It's no coincidence that he left when the support of the administration started to wane. I'll look up the SI article that brought that to light later.

During the Mac era, he heavily recruited 3 states, California, Texas, and Louisiana. Mac Brown, Pete Carroll, and Les Miles have slammed those doors shut.

There were a lot of different dynamics going on back then. The old southwest conference had become a joke and exposure was limited. Bottom line is kids want to be on TV. Formation of the Big 12 helped the south schools IMMENSLEY more than the north.

Guys like Stoops and Saban make 5x what Hawk makes. We're starting to see coordinators making $1,000,000 now. I love the Buffs and am as frustrated as anyone else here, but what's become of college athletics is totally perverted. I really can't be too critical of the administration for not wanting to join in the orgy.....

The reason that the power in college football has shifted South is because of intergration. The black athletes can stay at home, and don't have to go off to Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State, or OSU.

Doesn't change the facts. Colorado, Nebraska, and KSU dominated the Big 12 in the 90's. That wasn't so long ago.

That's 10 years ago, kids playing in high school don't remember. To them playing in the Big 12 is Texas or OU. everything else is sloppy seconds. Once in awhile you get a good Kansas, MU, or Nebraska season, but even then they get totally waxed in the Big 12 Championship.

Who cares if they remember. I wasn't making a point about kids playing in high school. My point is that it can and HAS been done quite recently, and can be done again. As for high school kids, CU pulls in top 20 classes when they show just a little success, recruiting under average circumstances is not really a problem here.

If local talent were all that was imporatant, Rutgers would be kicking everybodys ass. Located smack dab in between two of the largest cities in the US.

There are always exceptions, but Rutgers is making a comeback with their local talent instead of Penn State robbing them blind.

There is so much elite talent coming out of California, Texas, and Florida. UT dominates Texas but can't take all the studs and with A&M down Oklahoma gets the benefit. Cali and Florida have more in-state schools at an elite level that lock up more of the studs, so Texas is the best state to "cherry pick" recruits from.

Don't make the mistake that the population of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama being similar in size to Colorado has anything to do with the number of elite high school football players.

Alabama produces 3 to 4 times the talent that Colorado does, if not more.

New York City hardly produces any football talent for recruiting purposes.

While local talent is certainly beneficial it can be overcome with national prominence, which is what we had prior to the scandal. Colorado is a long way from home for CA and TX kids and we rarely play road games against Cali teams which is a factor.

However, winning makes everyone feel like they are home.

They were probably drunk. Being drunk should be a good defense, IMO. "Yeah, you ****ing honor, we did it. But we were ****ing wasted."
Not guilty. Next case.

i like the steve martin line. "so many things turn into serious situations because we dont say, 'i forgot'. lets say you are on trial for armed robbery. you say to the judge, 'i forgot armed robbery was illegal'."
