Can CU buy out Hawkins AND pay a top salary to a new guy?

And, god dammit, don't rip me. It seems to me, from the way outside, that CU does not have the financial wherewithall to pay salaries for a HC AND assistants that is commensurate with the top Big XII programs and, at the same time, a buyout of Hawkins. Unless there is some money out there that we don't know about, how can we afford to buy Hawkins out and, at the same time, pay what is necessary to bring in a big name?

YES.. Its been said the money is there from insiders..
'
Talkins is leaving. You won't have to serve Talkins his coffee in the morning for much longer.. They will negotiate a buyout and We'll See who we get as coach..

someone like a Sumlin, Venables, or EB type of hire will not cost as much as you make it out to be.. Nobody we hire is going to be making Bob Stoops, Mack Brown type of money and we aren't going to be bringing in some "BIG NAME" because CU isn't a big time elite job..

I don't doubt that Hawkins is done. I am sick that CU is not an elite program anymore. We had a great run for almost 15 years. I want that back. I really believe CU can be a perinneal (sp?) top 20 program. But it will take an about face by the admin, IMO. It'll take a helluva lot more than just hiring a great coach. Are Bensen and DiStefano willing to do that? How about the regents? The academics?

everyone breath. we will never be bama or texas or usc. and, you know what? that's ok. we've got EVERYTHING money can't buy at CU. we can be very successful with what we have. our program is better than this and it will return to its former level soon. the best part for me when we get there (which we will ) is when we beat the sellouts. i take great satisfaction in that. no compromise and no surrender.

Coaches make programs.. Forget the other stuff.. You overstate their importance or relevance to the football/athletic arena.

I hope you're right, Jimmy boy. I just go back to the team of Mac and Gee. Gee was committed. We haven't had that in a while.

this is mostly correct IF you are smart/luck enough to hire the RIGHT coach.

Mac overcame all of the alleged difficulties.

some big usc boosters that i know honestly thought they were done for good before carroll. a great coach can change everyone's perspective.

Mac must just be sick right now. :sad1:

The decision will be made official when Bohn puts on his clear green visor, pops a cigar in his mouth, and starts crunching the numbers.

When it reaches the point where you are going to lose enough support, that you will actually lose more $$$ keeping him than paying his buyout, then time to make a move...

This is what I have been saying since halftime of the Toledo game... Too bad for us, some folks who can't see past this year and may just prevent anything form getting done and we are stuck with several or more years of results like this.

I worry along the lines of DBT's post here. To fire and pay Hawk, plus be able to afford the $ necessary for a real D1 coach (i'm thinking $1.8 - 2M a year...) doesn't seem likely with the state of the program and the school. That is my main reservation about canning Hawk. Can we afford to bring in someone who will be successful?

Depends on what you mean by a "big name". If we're talking Saban, Meyer, Tressel type big name, we didn't have the money without buying out Hawk. If we're talking Patterson, Kelly or some other hot ticket of the year, I seriously doubt we can pay them and buyout Hawk. If we're talking somebody qualified and capable of bringing CU back, yes, I think we have the money...

I don't know if they have the money but have heard that they do. Another question to ask is can they afford to not fire Hawkins? The last few games we've seen a drop in attendance and if Hawk is retained I bet we see that carry over into next year as well. It seems to me that Bohn has to decide to take the financial hit of buying Hawk out or take the risk of further decline in revenue.

CU can certainly afford to pay off Hawkins and hire a new coach making a similar amount of money.

This is one of the reasons why I believe they will hire a coordinator. Someone who is willing to take $950k and try to prove that he deserves a bigger payday, rather than someone who is an established head coach and will command an immediate $1.5mil salary.

The CU Foundation has plenty of money to loan the AD. It is just a matter of the Regents being convinced it is a worthwhile investment.

LTC:
That's a scary thought - shows that we are now just a "spring board" program with the likes of Utah and MAC schools, but unfortunately that's what we have devolved to.

In my grandest dreams, I'd love to have the coord. come in build the program then stayed here until he retired. But those are just dreams.

Going Sinker...

I don't know why that can't happen.

Bob Stoops didn't walk into the OU job and receive a $4mil payday. He started out at $850k.

I think a coach who proves to be successful can and will be compensated. CU gave Bill McCartney a lifetime contract that was one of the highest in the NCAA when they gave it to him. I don't think they will ever be able to pay a coach $4mil, but a coach who steadily wins is going to get a big pay day, even at Colorado.

I'm sure there is a lot of great talent out there just waiting to be "discovered." A new hire will be the biggest, most important hire that Bohn has had and likely will ever have in his career. He had better get this one right.

how much was mccartney making a year? i have a bad feeling that bohn will NOT get the next coachiing hire right. not unless he can somehow get kelly or patterson who are guaranteed to be good hires. i really hope he doesn't get venables.

You both got it. Mac made the program and Gee gave him the support. Lets not forget that, when hired, Mac was a virtual unknown and an assistant at far, far, away Michigan. I believe the administration we have now is mostly supportive but not to the extent Gee was. The admissions standards are somewhat of a barrier to success. Where were at now, admissions, were only a small part of the problem. Hawk could not bring it together.

Mac must just be sick right now. :sad1:

must be an amazingly awful feeling watching what happened to the program he built :sad1:

The program was not left in the care of the person he designated for the job. Questions remain as to wether that was Bob Simmons or Eliot Uzelek. Simmons is supposedly who he picked.

Mac and Albino sparred quite a bit before his retirement, particularly about pay for him and for his assistants (No wonder they hired Neu at $400k). Add in his wife and the scholarship limitations coming on line (I believe the NCAA cut it from 100 to 85 effective 1995 season) and it was time to go out on top. Our AD left the next year in another sign of Albinos interference.

With Ritter posturing to increase his $90million HE funding cut to $180million in June I can see a lot of reasons why they will need that CU Foundation money for more important things than football.

The CU Foundation has something like half a billion in assets. Any money lent to the AD would be a loan and likely require a fair return. It wouldn't be a gift, and wouldn't be thieving from other programs. I'd bet my mortgage this is how it will get done, contingent upon Regent approval--Ritter has nothing to do with it other than political pressure if he chose to apply it, and I doubt he would get involved in the buyout of a coach.

My understanding of the CU Foundations money is that its and invested trust designed to generate revenue. That means they are in bonds and stocks and other interest returning vehicles. Those investments produce a cash return representing a fractional equivalent of the principal. That money is likely earmarked for (scholarships, payroll, infastructure, etc.) The trick to maintianing your wealth is NEVER spend the principal

Lets say they are getting back 5% on each Million which would be about $50k. Your taking $200,000 to $300,000 out of play for several years as well as liquidating your initial investments. Money seriously needed to supplement the states budget woes.

They may have more cash on their books than I know of. in which case it could make sense (though market dips are the best time to buy). That said our AD is running out of bank windows to go to finance their mistakes.

Why are Kelly and/or Patterson "guaranteed" to be good hires??

Every hire is a crapshoot!

Before the crash the fund was up in the $750/$800 million range. I think I saw that it is down to the $500 million range since the crash. Schools like Harvard, Notre Dame, etc. are in the billions.

Correct me if I'm wrong. That is just my recollection.
