Do you think that Hawkins believes any of what he says...

Over time a lot of what Hawkins statements sound like those of a used Car Salesman - makes all sort of unsubstantiated claims that he cannot back up.

He comes into the CU job and starts talking like they are going to be an offensive juggernaut - "You blitz, we score!", "Would Gandhi take a knee?"

I remember him in the 2007 season going nuts at half-time with CJ saying "We are so close, you can see it CJ, they are starting to get it!!!"

He talks in great depth about doing things right but he the penalties keep increasing showing in one area they are not doing the little things right.

He talks about finding the right guys for the program but then recruits players who other schools have backed off of because of academics in high school.

The guy is a massive disconnect, IMO. One of those people who likes to say big sweeping statements and hopes that everyone believes it but lacks the determination to fulfill his statements.

If his team really did the little things right and played good, sound fundamental football they would probably have 3 or 4 more wins right now.

Agreed with everything you state, except one thing:

"lacks the determination to fulfill his statements"

I think that is ALL he has is determination. He lacks the talent to accomplish his statements, IMO.

I said this before, but I think I may have an explanation. IMO, DH is from the Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) camp.

To most PMA'ers, negativity is poison. You must be postive all the time about everything, and if you do, by some mystical magical force, you will succeed. You know, if I can conceive it, I can achieve it.

It doesn't work. I can conceive I can fly, but that doesn't mean I can do it. I can conceive of windmill backboard shattering dunks, but it doesn't mean I can do it.

That is why you'll never hear DH get upset with anybody over anything EXCEPT being negative. It's always, "we're so close" "you guys a winners" "Clean up a few little things". you'll never hear him say that anything is wrong, that's how he can have such ptiful performances and still say "we're doing things the rigth way". It is his mindset, he can't ever say anything negative, because to him, that is the same as shooting yourself in the foot.

My HS FB coach was like that. He had us doing affirmations and when we'd jump offsides or something, we were so programmed we'd wouldn't get mad at our teammate, we'd say some postive reinforcement stuff like "That [jumping offsides] isn't like you". It's just bizarre IMO.

I never thought of it in those terms. Very interesting perspective and I think you may be right. Hawkins is not a tough love type of guy.

I was reading about Woody Hayes and he seems to be the total antithesis of Hawkins. The guy was tough and very tough on his players but what is interesting is the number of players who absolutely loved the guy even though he was tough on them almost to the point of being abusive.

It just seems to me there is a middle ground. Having a positive outlook is helpful, but it cannot be the reason you think you'll succeed. Ability and hard work cannot be trumepd by positvie belief. I could be wrong, but I'd say DH actually believes a lot of the PMA stuff I said above.

Oddly enough, the HS team I played for was very successful. Despite the new age weird stuff, our HC also would tell us he expected us to beat the other so bad they wouldn't want to go out for FB the next year. So I guess in some ways he was a hard ass too.

What did Bo Schembechler think? :smile2:

What did Bo Schembechler think? :smile2:

He described Woody Hayes as his lifelong friend.

Coach McCartney can be traced to the Woody Hayes coaching tree...Schembechler was a Woody Hayes protege and McCartney was a Schembechles disciple. I am sure that some of those values that Hayes espoused made it down to coach Mac.

I kinda knew that but Im bit young to remember that era. In knew the OSU UM rivalry had one of its peak periods under the two men. And that Mac was an assistant under Bo. Was it Marolt who hired Mac? I'll submit that this mess started under Judith Albino who meddled in the program.

What was the scandal that Hayes was kind of done in by? The Punch. That was a tough way to go out. 9th winningest coach of all time.

Mac was hired by Eddie Crowder but Eddie was on a short leash and their was a lot of involvement from the President and Chancellor at that time. Eddie had also hired Fairbanks so he was in a little bit of ****** at the time.

Hayes punched a Clemson player in a bowl game after the player intercepted an OSU pass sealing a defeat. It was inexcusable.

you are not the first person to say that.... when Gee left.... the Programs started to lack institutional support....

look at Vandy's football program.... they have done well considering their past since he went there....
