Positives

Well I'm a little tired of the depressing state of our football team and the hypotheticals surrounding any new coach talk. So maybe we can talk about the positives on this team. I think this team could be very good, I didn't quite buy into the 10 wins thing, but 8+ was certainly possible. Going by what we have coming back next year, assuming there isn't some freakish mass exodus of transfers.

QB: Hansen: he has played pretty good imo. The KSU game was bad, but he has had 3 out of 4 pretty good games including a decent one, stat wise at least, on the road at ISU. He can be a very good QB for us.
RB: Stewart, Sumler, Lockridge: The makings of a pretty good group of RBs. Sumler doesn't excite me, but he's solid. If these guys had a good OL they could really make a big time impact. The numbers Stewart puts up with the lack of blocking is impressive.
WR: Simas, McKnight, Simmons, Jefferson, Clemons, Darden, Ussery: A very talented if unproven group of WRs. Simas and McKnight are a very good duo, add in another guy stepping up next year and we should have a very capable passing game.
TE: Deehan, Thornton: The one place on offense we take a serious step backwards next year. No disrespect to Deehan, it's just that the depth will be an issue. Deehan has played well and won't be that big of a drop off from Devenny or Geer imo, it will be up to Thornton stepping up. We should probably run more 3 WR sets next year considering the depth at WR and lack thereof at TE.
OL: Solder, Behrens, Iltis, Miller, Givens: I don't know what the problem is, but I think a good coach could turn this into a very good OL. There will be experience and depth. There will be plenty of size and rivals stars there next year, this will be the key to the offense next year.
DL: Kasa, West, Bonsu, Cunningham, Herrod etc: A decent line so far this year. They are very young so improvement is to be expected. Depth is an issue because Hawk doesn't care to have a lot of numbers on the DL like he does on the OL. Healthy Kasa could be a hell of a player.
LB: Beatty(?JR this year right?) Major, Rippy, Ahles, Nobriga, Webb, Sipili: We lose a lot this year in Burton and Smart, but I have faith that Cabral has been coaching up the young guys. I must say, I love what Smart brings, but I think there are some younger guys who bring a lot more to the table as athletes than he does.
DB: Smith, J. Brown, Hicks, Mahnke, Polk, Perkins, Olatoye, Vigo, Wright(?): We lose some pretty good players this year, C. Brown and Burney. Jalil and Smith should be pretty solid at CB, I'm worried about what comes after them with the nickel and dime backs, though. At Safety it's a bit of a crapshoot. Polk should be improved and looks like a player so far this year, a full offseason at safety should help him. At the other safety spot I don't know. Hopefully someone will step up and challenge Perkins for it.
ST: Goodman, ugh. He has been better this season, maybe with a coaching change he'll feel like he's flying under the radar and not have any pressure on him which is where he performs at his best. Grossnickle from all reports outperforms DiLallo when they're punting together, so I'll count that as an improvement. Coverage units, imo, come down to either how good a teams depth is, or if a coach is willing to use it's "important" players on ST. A lot of it also has to do with basic fundamentals as well, so if we get a good coach in here it should improve. KR/PR hopefully will have some open competitions and I think there are a few that can make an impact.

Overall: I'd say we get most of our team back next year and that's always a good thing. The team is not flooded with talent or speed, but it does have some. The schedule is tougher next year, but I think this is a winning team nonetheless. Anywhere from 6-9 wins could be expected.

I have good feelings about our LB corp next season... I just think we are going to have some players. I feel the same way about the secondary... I just think those are some positions where we've been able to have some depth and some players who have had an opportunity to get a few years of seasoning behind the upper classmen (safety is obviously the exception there)

I still have hope that a good coach can turn this OL around. If that happens, then the whole offense could start clicking.

I'm interested in how good Toney Cleamons is going to look with Simas on the other side, Mcknight in the slot..

We need a big back with some speed..

Don't have anything positive to say about the line and I don't think its just the coaching..

Hansen with another year will be nice..

Still a lot of what ifs..

Well I mean, we'd be a good football team right now if we weren't filled with what ifs. Nothing is certain to be sure, but I think the talent is in place. The OL question, who knows, if it's more than coaching then we could be in trouble.

There has got to be more going on with our OL than simply all of them being busts. Many of them were highly recruited players.

Quentin Hildreth.

Expect big things.

hiding the video in case you've already seen it, but as a walk-on, this kid was a steal.

I think we have some pieces on the offense, no doubt..

Hansen looks the part at times at QB

Stewart is a decent runner

Simas looks to be a legit Big 12 receiver..

The new coach will have some pieces to work with on offense..

Givens and Miller were highly recruited along with MTM..

The others were not.

Miller is coming off injury and Givens is a redshirt freshman so they obviously can grow into the position more.. That's the best spin I can put on it right now..

cmon Jimmy - the forum is littered with debbie downer posts. Let's assume we've got a new coach coming. Let's focus on the positive pieces this team has got rather than continuing to tear into the OLine.

My post was actually intended to be positive in the sense that I think our OL's problems are a result of something other than their natural talent, i.e., something that can be fixed under a different coach.

Ilits, Dannewitz, and Behrens all had some good offers coming out of high school as well. Then you have Jack Harris from 2009. Just cannot believe that all those guys are busts and I really do not think they are.

Yeah!

I mean, it's obvious we aren't very good right now. Our coach is on his way out, the direction of the team is a bit of a mystery, all I'm trying to get at is that there is talent here and next season isn't going to be some rebuilding year.

The one thing I will say for the OL, it looked pretty good last year until they started to go down with injuries. Solder had his moments last year and seems to have regressed this year under Johnson. MTM was a beast before he went down. Behrens and Bahr had some solid games filling in. Miller was pretty good until this year, where he just fell off big time. Givens is just a redshirt Freshman like you said, he will get better. He could stand to add some weight too. Tau has apparently shown some good things in practice, now if only he could become eligible. Dannewitz and Harris are waiting in the wings too, and they were decently to highly recruited. Not as highly as MTM, Miller or Givens, but they had their choice of where to go.

I guess.. We'll see what the next coach will do with them.. I have my doubts on them but you have to think there's enough talent in the program by now to put together at least an average line with a good coach..

Hopefully Harris can come in and do some things in the spring..

Part of the problem is that we are truly young at this position. I don't like to use that excuse but any program that has a bunch of underclassmen on the line is going to struggle at times.. And a lot of injuries...

The Head suspension was a big loss for this team..

At least with a new coach we don't need to have the cupboard was bare discussions.

I agree we have what should be very good talent on OL, young and not very well coached/disciplined is the biggest problem.

RB-I like Speedy but he can't be an every down back. I would love to see a big, fast RB. must stay positive

WR I'm excieted about Simas and Clemmons next year.

DL has look good at times. Very young, and we need more depth, but I didn't expect them to play as well as they have.

LB-Cabral has been the best coach we have had in a long time. No real worries there.

DB-Not sold on the group at all. I like Polk, but IMO this is a big issue.

ST-How can we not get better?

Positives- you can win the Big 12 North with a good QB and some decent coaching. Next year we might have both.
