Special Teams again

Remember, Riddle is a great special teams coach. Just ask Hawkins (or Riddle).

I personally think special teams lost us the game. The Buffs looked pretty good on offense and defense. But when we have to punt and OSU is getting the ball at midfield every time....I don't know I haven't looked at any stats, total yards, ect. But I'm willing to be that OSU wasn't dominating those things as one would've thought. They didn't need to when they only had to move the ball 40 yards to get into the redzone. We lost the field position game big time.

Goodman managed to hit another freakin' upright. It's almost impossible to do that as often as he has over the past two years.

But, the bigger problem was that, after the miss, CU faced 4th and 2 at the 28. Should be a makeable field goal. But the Hawk's confidence in Goodman is understandably gone, and they go for it and don't make it. That's 6 points down the rat hole.

In addition to everything else, the Buffs' punting is pathetic. No distance, no hang-time, no pinning the opponent inside the 20. That has got to change if the Buffs are ever going to be a contender.

Another missed field goal, then no confidence to try another cost us 6 pts

After the hit upright, the kicker walked to the sideline and Riddle said two words to him. I should say "spit" two words, as it looked pretty intense, whatever was said. There was no "hang in there, everybody misses a few now and then" or "nice try" "don't worry, look to the next kick" pep talk.

In fact it looked like maybe he took a page out of Mangino's book and said something that would end up looking like this: **** if I tried to write it on the board.

Then AG dropped his head a few inches and looked straight ahead, but didn't seem to be concentrating on the game.

Anybody with a DVR and the ability to read lips?

I was tempted to start a poll guessing what might have been said.

- you just cost me my job.
- that's the last time you'll see the field in a buffs uniform.
- how is that essay assignment going in your lit class?
- play some leap frog, you'll feel better.
- so, you think Orton will be back this weekend?

The guy sitting next to me, deadpanned "uh, oh ... somebody's not happy."
I'm surprised the kicker's eyebrows weren't scorched from the look on Riddle's face.

I didnt see that I was so pissed he missed I left the room for a minute. I hope he did jump his **** for missing. Maybe a little anger and passion would get the point across.I would have benched him right then and there.

well besides the return by them, st was better. a blocked kick and a koff return are nice. only problem is, we havent seen it all year. goodman, my goodness, has a canon leg and cant get past his brain. the only way it is humanly possible to hit the uprights as many times as he has is because its in his head thats what will happen.

I have the game on in my office.... when that part comes... Ill look for what he said....

He should say go get therapy because that is what he needs in terms of kicking. Telling you, this is a mental deal.

Pretty bad if true, I'll be the first one to hate on Goodman, but it's not like that was an easy FG. What was it, 53 yards? AG should have told him how great his coaching was after the punt return in the 1st.

50+ yarders are made every week! Game is on the line you have to make it! Thats why you are there! If he can't make those find someone else who can. He just doesn't seem to be a gamer thats all! It in his head! He has the ability!

50+ yarders are made every week by good kickers like Mason Crosby. The other 98% of kickers will struggle to put up a 30% success rate at anything beyond 50.

I dont know the % but if 30% is the average he was due and he still should have made it! He has the leg, and the ability! I bet most of that 98% you talk about just don't have the ability without getting out of their rythm and trying to over kick the ball. He doesn't have too do that he has the power to just keep his same stroke and put it through. He needs a coach to work out whats between his ears.

I nearly forgot about the block. That was great. When's the last time we blocked a kick or punt? We all know this isn't Riddle's handiwork. He HAS to be getting help from Simmons.

I'll give you that he has the leg. I guess I don't understand what we're disagreeing on? I think Goodman's issues are in his head and a good coach wouldn't berate him after missing a 50 yard field goal, which are less than likely to be made at the college level. Hell we still consider the FG last year against a certain team in a certain last game of the year was a "miracle". I just don't think there are very many kickers on the college level that will make a 50+ yarder with any type of consistency.

I never thought we were disagreeing. I guess I expect him to make that kick more often then not, and I think most college kickers should make that kick at a higher % then what you are thinking. I would like to see some numbers on kicking % over lets say 45-50 yards. I will see what I can find.
