Ken Niumatalolo- Discuss

He would be an interesting hire. Some issues... would CU want to run an option offense? If so it would be a rough year or two transitioning to that type of system. Also, would he be successful at a job that is a step up from Navy? Paul Johnson has done pretty well at GT, admittedly against a weak ACC conference... could he have similar success?

Good coach, good that he kept the ship afloat when Johnson left. IMO still needs to have a full cycle (four years) before you can really assess him on his own. Probably the biggest factor he will need to overcome is that he is fully steeped in the triple-option offense of Paul Johnson and not too many programs want to go that direction at this time.

Maybe he'll replace Slick Rick in UCLA in two years?

Not a good hire until you see a couple more years. Right now he's a Hawkins and just holding up a ship left in great shape by Johnson.

You can win football games in a BCS conference running the triple option. The problem as I see it would be in recruiting guys who's goal is the NFL.

Agreed... the option game will put RBs and linemen into the NFL... but the passing game would go away. It would require a large change in the talent scheme in the program. TH could be a good option QB, but the main issue would be OL. To run the option you need big, mean, nasty O linemen that love to run block... I don't see that with the guys here right now. Running the option would be doable, but like I said it would require a few years to get the talent in.

Right on the money.

Do you need big linemen to run the option? Considering Navy and Air Force run it, I'm not sure that is the case.

Plus, I remember last year, Johnson threw a converted FB in at RT (250 lbs) because of injuries last year.

For the Power-I, maybe. But not for the 'bone, or the stuff the service academies run. You need athletic guys who can get around the corner and hit hard when they pull. They also need to be nasty-ass mean mother****ers who enjoy chop-blocking big slow DL's. The idea is to immobilize the DL, and let your speed do the work.

What we don't have is a proper tailback. Need a guy with some serious quicks, a little size, and good hands.

They interviewed Paul Johnson and asked him about recruiting guys, especially the QB.

There are a TON of guys out there that are option QBs in HS and are labeled "Athletes." PJ gets his pick of any guy out there that still wants to be a QB at a great school at the highest level of CFB.

Yes, he'll struggle landing a blue chipper QB, but he doesn't want a pro-style QB. He wants an option QB that can throw the ball 10-15 times a game.

GT leads the nations in plays over 25 yards. Yeah, they are a joke.

Maybe I don't want to discuss. Maybe I puke at the idea of CU having to hire the 2nd best coach Navy's had in the past 5 years.

we one the national championship running the option game under mac. NEB was unstopable running that for years. GA Tech found that niche this year. Everybody wants the spread, I would love to see the option back in boulder.

How about we hire the Temple coach instead, you know, the team that beat Navy the week before they beat ND.

Seriously though, Niumatalolo has came out and said he's not leaving and he loves it in Annapolis.

Yep.

I dont really think hes going to leave anytime soon unless a major job opens up, but it took Ga Tech a lot of balls to hire Paul Johnson over some of the other candidates out there.

The Temple coach will not go anywhere until after the PSU coaching spot is filled when Paturdno dies.

 missed the part about him playing at PSU. I just remembered he was a coach there, but only for one year. Is he even going to be the leading candidate? I thought there was someone on the staff that was pretty much a coach in waiting for them.

Obviously you were being facetious, but I would seriously look at Golden. He and Niumatalolo are probably in my top 5 or so of guys that we could probably get.

In regard to these guys not being willing to consider CU, of course they would. Guys at the Temples and Navys of the world would be very interested in this CU.

Golden will go to UVA or PSU (if and when that becomes available). He will not consider CU unless those 2 options have been closed to him...

When I was a younger man, I intended to marry Rebbecca Romaine. At some point I realized it might not happen, so I went ahead and married my wife.

Guys going to their alma maters sounds ideal, but in the end career ascension takes front stage with these guys.

I am not throwing out speculation..... PSU is very clear in their inner circles about who will be here when Joe dies.

Al won't wait 100%.... thus the Virginia job....

But Al is at a holding pattern here in Philadelphia.

This is the wrong time for CU to go after Al. If Joe died and the PSU job were awarded to Hall, Bradley, or Vanderlinden.... then Al might consider CU.

Exactly.

I just dont see Golden leaving the area for Colorado when he has no recruiting ties in the West, and has no history of being a recruiter, even at UVA.

If Colorado wants him and offers him the money to come here, he will leave. But he shouldn't be high on our list.

A lot of careers have been bet on the wrong side of Paterno dying off. Point in case, that guy at Syracuse was the hot candidate a couple years back and was rumored to be holding out for PSU. Now I can't even remember his name.

I'm with you on Golden, I think he'd be a great hire. To me, he is this years Turner Gill. He has taken a complete garbage program and turned it around.

I think Niumatalolo is legitimate when he says he doesn't want to leave Annapolis just yet. Maybe after a few years he gets the itch to coach at a big time college football program, but I get the feeling he likes the other part about his job. Coaching men that are going to serve their country. Winning BCS championships just might not be his #1 goal at this time.

Pretty much.

Al would consider Colorado if Bohn wanted him, and obviously paid him the money to come coach here.

The PSU job will be a serious battle like it would be for an inheritance of a rich old guy with a bunch of kids.

Hall is the most experienced but hes 69.
Bradley has been the rumored successor but hes 52 and has no HC experience.
Vanderlinded has experience as a HC and is 52.
Johnson has no experience and is in his 50's, but he has always been viewed as the emotional leader and best recruiter.
Then you have Jay Paterno who has been there for 15 years and is in his early 40's.

Thats just on their staff.

Schiano has been viewed as a favorite, and also Golden has a good chance also.
