Quarterbacks 2010 and beyond

Was reading up on Josh Moten and struck by how many QB candidates we will have next year. I'm not evaluating each one's chances of being the signal-caller, but just impressed that we may have quite a pool from which to select.
Yes, I know some of these are longshots, but I'm listing everyone who was either recruited or walked on as a QB, or was promised a shot at the position. Weird that we haven't a single sophomore there, and Tyler is only a junior because of burning his shirt twice, but interesting that we have so many coming up through the ranks.

Did I miss anyone?

Cody Hawkins, senior in 2010 (has used redshirt year)
Tyler Hansen, junior in 2010 (has not used redshirt year)

Clark Evans, redshirt freshman in 2010 (has used redshirt year)
Jerry Slota, redshirt freshman in 2010 (has used redshirt year)
Seth Lobato, redshirt freshman in 2010 (has used redshirt year)
Blake Stanley, redshirt freshman in 2010 (has used redshirt year)

Josh Moten, enrolling in Jan. 2010
Nick Hirschman, freshman in fall 2010
Munchie Legaux, freshman in fall 2010
Danny Spond, freshman in fall 2010

One never knows category:
Paul Jones, freshman in fall 2010 (Penn State commit)

assuming none are lost after Hawk is gone....

Paul Jones??

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have included him.
Paul Jones is a Penn State commit ****, but they also have Robert Bolden QB in the same class about about 17 other qbs (I exaggerate).

At one time there was rumblings he was looking at CU.

That's one thing our season does for us: makes it look enticing to some players who see where they can make an immediate impact.

and, assuming no new guys are drawn to Boulder by our new coach.

I guess I would expect there to be some movement up or down in our class as with anyone's recruits. There are always some decommits, late commits, surprise commits, and so on. (There's always Hinder... )

But hypothetically, we are starting to have a meaningful depth chart.

yes.....get us a coach and decent staff, and the sky is the limit.

Personally, I think CH should go elsewhere. I don't think it is a good think to have the ex-coaches son on the team. He is a not legit D1 QB and could potentially be a distraction. He had his time in the sun here because of his dad but that time is past.

Anthem, I respectfully disagree with a lot of what you said. You are right, he isn't a D1 QB but as he showed against OSU having him around as a backup can be valuable. And nothing he has done has ever given us any indication that he would be a "distraction" in fact I think that man's actions point to him being a positive influence on the team regardless of his position.

If he decides to leave then I will support him and wish him the best but if that Buff wants to stay I think we should all be grateful enough to let him find a way he can contribute.

Cody will be a senior next year and has used his redshirt previously. If he wants to graduate, he will stay. If he wants to play football -- and I believe he does -- he will make a contribution in whatever way he is asked, whether it is on the field, on the sidelines, mentoring other players, and so on.
Never heard anyone make a case that Cody Hawkins didn't put forth 100% effort.
He's still an "elite 11" QB, with that many up and coming quarterbacks, he might be the guy who can really help get these new guys in shape, teach them the mental aspects of the game, how to train, how to prepare ... all things he's good at.

Cody needs to go out the door with his dad. He is more of a potential distraction to a new staff than any amount of value he could offer. I think if I am a new coach coming into this situation, I would not want him around. The negatives far outweigh the positives in my opinion. He rode his dads coat tails here. You or anyone else, do not know how is he going to react to his dad getting canned.

Hey, I know you are new here, but trashing players isn't cool. The new coach -- if there is one -- can decide how to handle it, but without "cause" I would expect Cody's scholarship to be renewed along with the rest of the team.

I would suspect that a new coach WOULD want Cody, at a minimum, as the QB backup when someone needs a quick replacement.

Cody put his time in with the team and will have the opportunity to graduate from CU. Whether or not he is on the field, he is our most experienced QB. He has value to the team, and has never shown any petty behavior (that I know of). All signs point to him being able to contribute as a senior. Keep in mind, his goal appears to be coaching, and having a student-athlete who can mentor younger QBs gives us a "free" assistant that doesn't count against NCAA coaching limits.

Cody isn't the problem. He's shown a lot of class through a situation that cannot be easy for him.

Settle down. No one is trashing anyone. Face facts. The kid would not get a look at the majority of BCS programs yet, he starts how many years here?
Personally, I doubt the kid would want to stay given the fact that his dad will be fired. I just think that a new staff would not want the potential distraction that he offers.

Unless we bring in a JUCO, we really need Cody back for our depth chart next year. Tyler style of play means he's going to get hit and I wouldn't like the idea of having only freshmen available if he got hurt. Over the course of a season, odds are he's gonna miss some snaps.

Other than that, I like our depth at QB and our talent level.

I prefer clean breaks, but if anyone can deal well with that type of difficult situation... Cody can. He's been a good team guy and we could use him next year if he wants to stay.

I took your side in a debate on Rivals, but I think I'm coming down on the other side now. Cody has built relationships with his teammates and he's earned the right to be here with them for his senior year. Also, depending on whether he needs the 2010-2011 academic year to graduate, he could be really set back academically by a transfer.

In the final analysis, though, it's Cody's call. If he stays, I welcome him. If he decides to leave, I would understand.

I'd get Evans ready. I don't think CH has a place on the roster. I think CH is a good kid but just suppose that for some reason, he developed an issue with his dad being fired, do you really want that potential distraction in your locker room?

Evans, and Hansen, and ... the whole list of guys to step up.
We need size, mobility, arm strength, but we have to factor in experience. Hansen should keep getting better, but I hope some of the younger guys make it tough to know who the QB is during the spring.

Potentially several guys will have a shot at starting QB fall of 2010, and there will be guys in the wings working hard to prove they deserve a shot at it, too.

This is a good thing, having choices. Having too few possibilities really hurt us, but it's looking good for 2010 and beyond.

There are a lot of names there. I hope we do not mess around with some of these guys that are never going to get meaningful playing time at QB during their career. Let them get a chance, but when it is clear their future is not at QB, move them to another position. We cannot afford wasting some of the athletes listed there just because we want to be nice and offer 7-8 different players an extended shot at QB.

Walk in here, tell long timers to "settle down", rundown a guy that has put everything he has into the position he was put in? My previous response was done with respect but I think I will change my tone a bit.

**** you newb. Watch your ****ing mouth about people that pour their heart and soul into our program.

Any player on the roster can have a personality conflict with a position coach, coordinator, head coach or whatever. I actually worry about Cody less on this than I do with most of the other guys. Reason being, if he did have an issue he's not the type of guy that would undermine the team and its prospects for success in 2010. He's just not that guy.

Like I said, I do like clean breaks. But if Cody wants to stick around, he has earned that and I have no doubt the positives he brings will far outweigh any negative baggage.

It will be Cody's decision and AJ is correct in that we will need him as a backup. He proved at OSU how he can come off of the bench and lead the team. In addition, he has been all class and is a really good kid. You treat him like any other kid on the team moving forward but he deserves and will get his scholly in his senior year. That is the way it should and will be if Hawk gets let go.

Tell u what Cody has done a pro job at handling getting benched and coming in thurs. night and producing. He is a team guy if there ever was one.

:yeahthat:
We are blessed that Cody has been like that. I could have been much worse.

I'd love to have Cody on the team next year and why wouldn't we? He's got a ton of game day experience and is a smart player who will give his all for the team. He is the perfect back up.

Cody proved the other night that he is the perfect backup QB. He came in for a few series (granted, 3 of them we punted on) but he led us down the field and we scored with under a minute to go in the half and then he went back to sitting on the bench.

He is always the first one to celebrate with Tyler after a TD and seems to be a 2nd QB coach on the sideline for all of the younger kids.

Cody has been nothing but classy in a very difficult and challenging time and situation. From the moment that the change was made at QB Cody has been TH's biggest supporter. This has been obvious from his actions on the sidelines, in the press, and from what TH has repeatedly stated.

If his dad gets fired if will obviously be a tough situation for Cody and the new coach. At he same time Cody has been around college football all his life, he knows that is how things work and based on what he has done so far I would expect nothing less than him handling the situation the right way.

As a player Cody certainly has his limitations and that is why the change had to be made. That said to have a guy who is willing to mentally prepare himself completely for every game even though he is unlikely to play is a huge asset for a team. If Cody is the back-up next year then we will have a situation where he will be as prepared as any back-up could be and his teammates will have full confidence in him when he comes in.

His high level of football intelligence and knowledge could also be a huge asset to the younger QBs in a transition year to a new system. Cody has made it clear that he wants to be a coach and this would be a chance for him to gain valuable experience and contribute.
