Programs you respect the most....

If we're headed in a different direction after this season coaching wise, we should have our next coach pattern our program against others.

Which programs then do you respect the most?

I would have to say Penn State, Florida, and Oregon State are the three I have the most respect for at this point in time. I know Penn State has had a few problem players in recent history, but as a football program I really respect the Nittany Lions.

You have to have some admiration for Florida, even though I'm not a fan at all of the SEC. Granted, they have it pretty easy being in the 3rd best recruiting ground in the entire country, but at least Meyer runs a cleaner program than his peers at FSU and Miami.

In addition to those two, I really like what Oregon State has done in the past decade under Mike Riley. Oregon State does not even come close to what it can offer facilities wise against its in state rival Oregon, yet he's built a winner (not a champion yet) in the Pac 10 in probably the 2nd hardest place to win at in the conference (Wash. State is even harder). He has no chance out recruiting Cal, USC, UCLA, Oregon and to some extent Washington on the West Coast yet he's been able to find hidden gems around the region.

Other teams I like, some I respect more than others in regards to their admissions and past criminal activity: Michigan, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, and Miami.

Hmmm...

I've done the same kind of "soul searching" benchmarking that you present. Didn't have Oregon State on my list. Not for any bad reason, just didn't think of them.

I would say Iowa, under Kirk Ferentz, is certainly a program that is to be respected. Ohio State, I hate the team, but respect the hell out of Tressell and Co. And also Cal has been a fairly consistent program with similar backgrounds as CU.

you apparently dont know alot about Penn State...

Clean? UF? Seriously? 24 UF players have been arrested since Urban Meyer became coach at UF...comparatively, only 1 Miami player has been arrested and that person has left the team...

Utah
Boise State
TCU

And other underprivileged children who've risen up to smack the big dog in the mouth.

Kind of intersting you would have Wisconsin, thier AD has strong H U S K E R ties:confused:

I didn't know Barry Alvarez had ties to the corn. I remember he was at Notre Dame back in the late 80s. Nebraska before that?

Interesting you list these schools relative to "respect"

Michigan: Has had its problems much like CU as of late (can't win the big one). Their fans don't respect the game. They are spoiled (being spoiled, that must make them much like Nebr. fans).

Washington: Must admit this school may be worth respecting. Don't know much about the program.

Oregon: What a joke. They kick a player off a team for fighting at a game. Decide they need to win games and give into "winning at all costs" and let him back in. Their fans are completely stupid football fans. They don't know the first thing about football. Without Nike, Oregon still would be in the sticks.

Virginia Tech: This program is the Nebr. of the East. Their fans know the game and run a class act. If you can't respect Nebr. then why V. Tech? Buff fans should hate them like they hate the "rednecks of the plains".

Miami: This school consists of a bunch of thugs. Have you ever checked into their graduation rates. The quality of the Miami education will never match that of CU. If you respect them for their program then you must respect Nebr. for its history for winning and the success of its overall athletic program on and off the field.

I'm confused! Seems to me Nebr. should be included on this list. That's not going to happen so this list needs revised.

Funny nobody has mentioned Texas. I hate the bastards, but I'm man enough to admit that it's jealousy. They have what I want.

Bama: Saban has taken them from a young barely bowl-eligible team to a MNC contender.

Stanford: Harbaugh has done a whale of a job.

Georgia Tech: Johnson pulled the flexbone out of mothballs and is routinely kicking programs with more $$$ and talent.

Navy: See Ga Tech

AFA: See Navy

TCU: Patterson's team can flat-out play. Too bad they'll miss the MNC game by 1 spot.

Iowa: If they had half the talent of the Big 10 bullies, they'd be unbeatable

FAIL! Did you take reading at CU?

The question was name programs you respect... Not make a list of the teams you hate or know nothing about.

Yeah, Texas has an excellent program and a long tradition of winning. It's also a good school.

I'd add TCU and Air Force, Alabama.

I think the university in America that is most all around similar to Colorado is Washington. They have roughly the same football history as we do (including Neuheisal running shady business while he's been at both schools). They have a legendary coach around the same time we had a legendary coach. Location wise they are right near a major metropolitan city (we're outside of Denver while they essentially are in Seattle). Both have very similar culture, great academics, large research based institutions. Their football program sucks as much as ours does now but if there is a university I can appreciate that is close to Colorado, it would have to be University of Washington.

Michigan: Has had its problems much like CU as of late (can't win the big one). Their fans don't respect the game. They are spoiled (being spoiled, that must make them much like Nebr. fans). Don't know many Michigan fans, I have heard they have good fans, don't really care. It's a good school with a great tradition that did it clean.

Washington: Must admit this school may be worth respecting. Don't know much about the program. Get back to me when you figure it out.

Oregon: What a joke. They kick a player off a team for fighting at a game. Decide they need to win games and give into "winning at all costs" and let him back in. Their fans are completely stupid football fans. They don't know the first thing about football. Without Nike, Oregon still would be in the sticks. Pretty sure LaMichael James filled in nicely, they suspended him for most of the season when your boy Dr. Tom would've sat him out of the first quarter of the next game.

Virginia Tech: This program is the Nebr. of the East. Their fans know the game and run a class act. If you can't respect Nebr. then why V. Tech? Buff fans should hate them like they hate the "rednecks of the plains". Not overly familiar with Tech as a school or their fans, I like how they play football. Explain to me exactly how they are the Nebraska of the east?

Miami: This school consists of a bunch of thugs. Have you ever checked into their graduation rates. The quality of the Miami education will never match that of CU. If you respect them for their program then you must respect Nebr. for its history for winning and the success of its overall athletic program on and off the field. Like I said, not all of the schools I listed were because of their clean programs. I don't have a clue how good of an education is available at Miami since I never plan on going there. I do respect Nebraska's winning tradition, their athletic program off the field however..

I'm confused! Seems to me Nebr. should be included on this list. That's not going to happen so this list needs revised.

Posts like this are exactly why I hate Nebraska. A lot of it's fans are such whiny little b******.:cry::cry::cry: Why can't you list Nebraska!?!?@?!?@! Same reason I didn't list Texas or Oklahoma. Texas is the only school in the Big 12 I like enough to respect, it just doesn't make my list. I suppose I didn't give my list that took me all of 5 seconds to think of wasn't well thought out enough, I apologize.

Bama: Saban has taken them from a young barely bowl-eligible team to a MNC contender.
BIG RED: Pelini is the man and fan base is awesome.

Is this the question?: What are the schools which are similar to CU that have a successful model which CU should/could emulate?

If so, that's a good question.

First, what are the schools that are similar to CU with respect to the total football identity of the school (proximity to recruiting, conference affiliation, academics, football culture/history, etc.).

Someone listed Washington. I think that's a very good match, probably the best.

Others:
Utah (not before Urban), Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon

Also on the list:
Oregon State, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas (not before Mangino)

I think most of the schools in my two lists are similar to CU in various meaningful ways, some more than others.

I would exclude nearly every school which is not in a BCS conference and all schools located in Texas, California or Florida.

No matter how you slice it, it seems to always come down to the coach and his ability to create and manage a program, which encompasses much, much, much more than understanding x's and o's. It's recruiting, hiring, attracting and working with quality assistants, understanding how to delegate, motivation, public relations, talent evaluation, adjusting and responding trends/the times, understanding how to teach/lead young men ages 18-22 from various social/eco backgrounds, recruiting, recruiting, recruiting, recruiting, recruiting, recruiting...

So, who is having success? Oregon, Utah?

Bottom line, it's very hard to be successful. College football is a zero sum game, to state the obvious. Someone wins, someone loses.

It's hard to know if your coach or potential coach "has it" or not. That said, I think it's hard to make a case for Hawk after four full years. Too many indicators going down or sideways. I think the most telling indicator for me is the seeming underperformance from your best recruits...if they even hit the field. That and the bad judgment to have his son play at CU. He was just asking for problems. Good people, Cody and Dan...but bad judgment from Dan. So many ramifications and complications. Not smart, IMO.

Personally, I think you guys made a big mistake firing Barnett. I don't think you can expect CU to have the kind of "cycle-less" success that you see in other top programs which are located in recruiting hotbeds.

Thanks Herd.

How cool. My own personal little red groupie.

What was that old superstition again?

IIRC -- If I can help you get your '86 Olds started, you have to grant me 3 wishes, or let me sleep with your daughter or something.

Do tell.

about PSU off the top of my head....

last year had 15+ players arrested....

and the big headline was that A. Scirotto (sp?) and several players beat up a student sending him to the hospital with serious injuries....

now... all programs have problems like this.... but if we are going to admire programs.... lets not admire 2008's second place finisher in players arrested in a BCS conference....
