Mike Heimerdinger, OC - Tennessee Titans.
Interviewed for several NFL positions and was always passed over.

College roommates with Mike Shanahan, long time friends with him and Jeff Fisher.

Coaching resume:
2008-09: Offensive Coordinator, Tennessee Titans
2007: Assistant Head Coach/Quarterbacks, Denver Broncos
2006: Assistant Head Coach, Denver Broncos
2005: Offensive Coordinator, New York Jets
2000-04: Offensive Coordinator, Tennessee Titans
1995-99: Wide Receivers, Denver Broncos
1994: Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Backs, Duke University
1989-93: Offensive Coordinator, Rice University
1988: Offensive Coordinator, Cal State-Fullerton
1983-87: Wide Receivers, University of Florida
1982: Quarterbacks, North Texas State
1981: Wide Receivers, Air Force Academy
1980: Graduate Assistant, University of Florida

He really seems to be a person that knows how to use the talent on his team, rather than a "system" coach relies on specific types of players for specific roles.

While it has been a few years, he did coach at two very academically challenging universities (Duke and Rice). And has several years with a big time program in Florida.

His bio on the Titans website has this line:

"His offenses have been receiver-driven, but also have the ability to control games with a rushing attack."

Heimerdinger was the Titans' offensive coordinator when Steve McNair had three of the top four passing seasons of his career.

He has complete control over the offense, calling plays, etc. (Fisher has a defensive background).

Not sure what his exact salary in the NFL is, but probably just north of $1,000,000 per year.

With Shanahan and Cowher plus other NFL candidates available this year in the NFL coaching carousel, he might be left in the cold to fill his goal of a HC job unless he goes to the NCAA.

Not a bad option. The Monday night crew was talking this guy up quite a bit for the changes he has made to the Titans' offense to take advantage of Vince Young's unique skill set. Apparently the offense under Kerry Collins looked completely different.

Oh the signs at Folsom with:

Heimerdinger and Bohn....

not as good as the Beavers playing the Trojans... but good.

Florida was the 2nd dirtiest football program of the 80's, behind only SMU.

Hes 57, its plenty of guys like him with good resumes but they get passed over because of their age. Unless you have some connections to a front office, most of these guys get interviewed based on their resume but dont get a HC job.

I understand and respect your point about UF. But does that taint every position coach that worked there?

You know who else was on the UF staff? Mike Shanahan.

Cabral has been our LB coach for a long time, was the coordinator of the football camps, and all of this through the "scandals" at CU. Does that mean he is dirty by association?

As far as his age, he is younger than Mack Brown, Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, and is nearly the same age as Jim Tressel, Gary Pinkel, Les Miles, and Dave Wannstedt. I don't think his age is considered "too old" to be a 1st time HC.

While there certainly alot of good candidates and young "up-and-comers", I don't think it is wise to dismiss a guy like Mike Heimerdinger.
