Nate Solder 1st team All-Big 12

Really? Congratulations to Solder. TBH, I didn't see any nods coming from our OL, but that's awesome for him. Hopefully he can build on it for next year and be even better as a senior.

that is ****ing shocking. Really, no Scotty? He had one hell of a year!

I hope this isn't something that makes Nate think about going pro. Not too excited about having to throw Harris or Dannewitz into the fire next year.

Surprised that he didn't make at least 2nd team WR.

Also sucks that B-Lock didn't get the 2nd team KR/PR nod (or even honorable mention). He had more KR yards, better average, and more TD (1) than Perrish Cox did. Imagine if he had the job the whole season!

Congrats to all the Buffs that got the nod and the honorable mentions.

No worries there. There's more likelihood that Solder skips the NFL entirely to focus on his career. I think it's something in the veterinary bio/medicine area he's pursuing.

Congrats to all the Buffs who were honored!

:wow:

I know he's a rural kid and has stated he wants to be a vet but why would he pass up the $$$$$ from the NFL? That could pay for his schooling and the ability to buy into or start his own Vet clinic down the road.

He's the kind of physical freak that the NFL just drools over and now he has some recognition for his on the field performance. And he's still raw, so in theory the sky is the limit with regard to how good he could get.

really shocked Jimmy ain't on a team as well. Teams threw away from him all year.

If Solder stays one more year (hoping!) he could be a top 10 pick next year. If the NFL does not structure rookie salaries he could get a HUGE payday. Right now I could see him being a 2nd rounder, possibly late first, or possibly in the 3rd.

:wtf:

He stopped getting beat outside towards the end of the year, but jesus, I just don't see him putting NFL level performances on the field... maybe next year, but reallly?

remember he's a workout warrior too. The NFL loves that stuff. He'd probably measure out as the fastest, quickest OT at 6-9 305 pounds. He's also had two different OL coaches, with two different philosophy's that frankly I don't think were/are very good coaches. If Solder stays, I would expect him to be a first rounder if he continues to progress.

I think the issue with getting beat to the outside was that it seemed like he was trying to cover for the interior line as well. Our poor play at the Guard/Center positions to start the season really made the tackles jobs almost impossible.

As that got better during the year, Nate could focus on his own assignments more.

Just my observation, not that there is any experience behind it.

I would think he would stay. Mostly because he was just converted from TE to tackle 3 years ago (or was it 2? I forget...) I really think he could use another year at the position at the college level before he hits the NFL and has to either jump in and play or spends his time on the bench....

If memory serves, this is an improvement over last year.

He had some rough games but he has all the "measurables" that the pros's like. He is huge and still has room to get bigger, he is very mobile with good agility, he is very intelligent so will test very highly.

He also is fairly new at his position which can be a positive because it is easier to unteach bad technique and teach good technique.

He is also a high character guy which is important if you are guaranteeing millions of dollars on a contract and does not have a history of leg or back injuries which can also put contract money at risk.

If he continues to progress for another year he could be a wealthy young man.

A lot of NFL teams pick based on measurables. Check out his workout numbers, his 40 yard dash (under 5s) and his shuttle (and I bet his VJ). You think Smith would get a high grade, but if he did it would be based on his measurables as well.

Both are projects though right now though, but LTs are the most sought after position, and near the top of the pay scale, after QB. Anything after the 20th pick I could see him go just because he wouldn't get top flight money and they could give him a chance to develop. He wouldn't be thrown into the fire anytime soon on an NFL team, but with the right coaching he has everything scouts drool over. Teams won't pass on a "can't-miss" (even though he has plenty of work to still do) LT prospect for 5 rounds.

oh fair enough, I just can't believe they are ignoring his on field performance to that degree.

All Big 12 is not supposed to be about measurables either. Congrats to Solder, but I certainly did not see this one coming.

Could it be that the members of this board don't know wtf we're talking about when evaluating a single o-lineman's performance? Especially compared with the Big 12 coaches who watched film for game planning and game reviewing purposes? That maybe Nate (Miller, too) actually earned the accolades through on-field performance?

Or is that just crazy talk? :smile2:

:yeahthat: I may or may not be guilty of this :smile:. I thought Solder played okay this year, but not first team all Big 12. I'm going to go ahead and not critique anyone on the OL as an individual anymore, it's for the best. I'm still going to be enraged when they give up the most sacks in the country, though.
