The three stooges up at CU (Benson, DiStefano, and Bohn) seem to think we as fans would rather have a person that can’t coach but gets great students to one that wins and keeps players out of trouble. I think it calls for a poll.
The coach should look for players of Good Character but, I think winning is all important. From a team perspective the coach needs to work to keep the players out of trouble and eligible. The players have an opportunity to do great thing with a CU degree. It is up to the players to take advantage.

Nice poll.

I live in Boulder. I have a wife and a young son. I will never tolerate a CU football team that has things going on like the Tennessee incident (armed robbery of a convenience store by players). If that type of stuff started to happen, I'd turn off all support for the program... even if we won a National Championship.

Nor should it be tolerated, but winning football to these turds means their will be rape and pillage, and that's BS.

Your sig says it all, and right now, the 3 mentioned above are timid and afraid.

I disagree with the premise that a choice has to be made between losing and getting good scholar- athletes. The admin / ad / & coaching staff have framed it in binary terms: we choose between gang bangers or winning. This argument is nonsense. Here is what I expect (non-negotiable) from a coach. Failing on *any* of these is reason enough for termination:

a. Run a clean program.
b. Recruit quality players / student athletes.
c. Win more games than you lose. And do so the right way --> points a & b.

I agree with you but I think your missing the point. Dan Hawkins was retained because he is doing things right off the field.

One of the things that bothers me is that the admin doesn't help get in players that come from a low socioeconomic background that have have not had the same advantages as most of the student body (especially most of the out of staters). There are good athletes that may not have the HS grades for whatever reason (bad schools, background, apathy, etc...), but can turn it around in college. We can find those students, they just won't be admitted due to the standards the admin has set in. The academic standard at CU is good and tough, but with the right admin and AD support we can make sure these kids will graduate (tutors, study groups, etc...).

A lot of the players on Cal wouldn't have a chance to be at Cal if not for their athletic ability, but Tedford does his best to run a clean program and make sure his kids graduate. Cal is a much tougher school than CU, but yet the admin has made a commitment to sports. You don't have to compromise academics to run a clean program, yet our administration believes it is an either-or proposition.

Option 5. This poll is ****ing stupid.

"Keeping their noses clean and good academics" is the same as "keep players eligible and out of trouble."

While I want the players to get their degrees and stay out of trouble, winning is the only thing that really counts.

What kills me about the academic standards excuse is that Texas, UCLA, Cal, Michigan all are better academic institutions than CU. I think it is a poor excuse to use. That being said. Back in the late 80's, Mac had the ability to recruit borderline students athletes with Prop 48.

I voted wrong.

I was thinking the poll was our opinion of what the administration's priority on the team is at CU, which is obviously option 1. I would've voted for the 3rd option.

We are all CU products here so here and were taught to analyze data. So here is my thought about these incidents. It is simple. A given number of college kids and the hangers on that a university attracts will have criminals. There will always be an athlete that gets into trouble. Are student athletes more, the same, or less likely than Joe or Jane College to get into trouble? If the answer is "less" then the ahtletic department is doing a good job if not then the AD has a problem.
